BACKGROUND OF THE PROBLEM :

A students lifestyle in the trimester system is significantly different from those that are in a college with the semester system. In the trimester system, time flies by extremely quickly. Just when you finally figure out where your classes are, its time to study for midterms. And before youre even done studying for midterms, its time to sign up for next trimesters classes. This fast-paced, busy schedule may not be for all people, but it does have its merits. For starters, a 10 week trimester keeps you on top of things and it means that you only need to spend 10 weeks in that class you dont like. Survive those 10 weeks and theoretically all should be well. Also, in the trimester system you get to take a diversity of classes because you get that one extra opportunity to actually sign up for a completely new schedule. Of course, in the trimester system academic stress is always at the forefront. Fail one assignment or test and you will have to work in overdrive to bring up your grade before the trimester ends. But because there is such a limited amount of time, most of your classes will have very few assignments. In the semester system, you have more time to bring your grades up. Also, those extra weeks mean you get to spend more time in those classes that you do like. A lot of people like the idea of spending more time on subjects and topics that they thoroughly enjoy. This extra time can even be used to learn a subject more in depth. Furthermore, in the semester system you dont have to constantly worry about the next trimesters enrollment dates and tuition deadlines. Overall, the semester system is more relaxed and laidback. As to which system is better, its all up to your own personal preference.

PURPOSE OF THE STUDY :

The purpose of the program examination was to evaluate The impact of semester and trimester scheduling in the colleges . Results of the study will not be used as in any way for unfair Means data for managing and maintaining overall progress of Educating the students in different colleges.

MAIN RESEARCH OBJECTIVE :

The objective of this research was to answer the Following questions in the five major categories of student Achievement, staffing, curriculum, cost and the college Culture:

1.)

How does trimester scheduling effect student achievement as measured by standardized test scores, work load and meeting the early intervention needs of students?

2.)

How is staffing effected by trimester scheduling as measured by the number of staff required, teacher preparation time allocated and teacher professional development opportunities?

3.)

How does trimester scheduling effect curriculum as measured by the variety of classes offered?

4.)

How cost effective is trimester scheduling in the areas of staffing, supplies and facilities?

5.)

How does trimester scheduling effect the school culture with a focus on teacher/student connections,

discipline referrals and graduation and dropout rates?

METHODOLOGY:

REASEARCH DESIGN :
Descriptive research

SAMPLE POPUATION :
The sample population used was the students and teaching staff of the institute. The student groups were comprised of both males and females aged 20 to 25 for students and 25+ for teachers.

HYPOTHESIS TAKEN:
Semester system is preferred over trimester system as the work load less i.e;less hectic, understanding gained is good, time duration is more as compared to trimester system which helps to internalize the subjects more in detail.

QUESTIONNAIRE FOR STUDENTS: 1. Which system does your college practice? Semester Trimester 2. Has the system been prescribed by the university or AICTE ? SEMESTER SYSTEM: 1. How many classes are held on a daily basis? 2 3 4 more than 4 2. What is the duration of each lecture? 45 mins 60 mins 1 hr 15 mins

Above 1 hr 15 mins

3. What is the length of the course structure provided for a particular subject? 18 24 30 36 4. Are the number of classes prescribed/ fixed ? Yes No 5. What is the speed by which the course commences ? Very Fast Fast Moderate Slow Very Slow

6. How is the schedule? Very Hectic Hectic Mangeable Not Manageable

7. What are the number of subjects in a semester? 6 7 8 9

8. After how much of duration mid term are held? 3 weeks 4 weeks 5 weeks more than a month Same would be for trimester system.

LIMITATIONS OF THE STUDY

Questionnaire can be filled in hurry which might deprive us from getting accurate information. Can be filled under the influence of others and hence can be biased. Students who dont attend college on a regular basis can provide us with less reliable information. It can be according to ones preference (comfort zone) and not according to the actual benefit gained out of both.

Key points of comparison:

1. Duration 2. No. of subjects 3. Duration of classes in a day 4. Speed of course ongoing 5. No. of subjects 6. Schedule pattern 7. Attendance 8. Course structure 9. Midterm duration 10. No. of classes per subject
