Lesson Topic: Ratio and Proportions Length of lesson: 90 minutes

Grade level: 7th

Curricular Context / Overview: Performing mathematical content accurately while applying understanding of ratios and proportions to real life scenarios

Stage 1 Desired Results Goals/Content Standard(s): CC.7.RP.1 Analyze proportional relationships and use them to solve real-world and mathematical problems. Compute unit rates associated with ratios of fractions, including ratios of lengths, areas and other quantities measured in like or different units. For example, if a person walks 1/2 mile in each 1/4 hour, compute the unit rate as the complex fraction (1/2)/(1/4) miles per hour, equivalently 2 miles per hour. CC.7.RP.2 Analyze proportional relationships and use them to solve real-world and mathematical problems. Recognize and represent proportional relationships between quantities. Understanding (s)/goals: 1. Proportional relationships express how quantities change in relationship to each other 2. Ratio determines the relationship of two numbers in real world application CC.7.RP.2a Decide whether two quantities are in a proportional relationship, e.g., by testing for equivalent ratios in a table or graphing on a coordinate plane and observing whether the graph is a straight line through the origin.

Students will know Fractional representation Fractional computation Meaning of Relationship Basic arithmetic skills

Essential Question(s): 1. What is the importance of ratio and proportions in everyday life? 2. What are some examples of real world applications where ratio/proportions are used? 3. Why do relationships have to be of life items when applying ratio and proportion? 4. How can the concept of ratio be transferred to other curricular areas. Students will be able to Accurately read and write the ratio of items Accurately explain the relationship of two ratios in

comparison(proportion) Accurately transfer the skill of ratios to real world applications Stage 2 Assessment Evidence Performance Task(s): (Grasps) G- design a layout of items for a new recreational playground displayed through a scale drawing R- environmental engineer A- school principal and ground supervisor S- you are being asked to decipher between different recreational items to include on the new recreational area for the school next year. proper utilization of the space is a must. your plan of the new area will be modeled through a scale drawing of the area that will be emailed in a presentation format to the ground supervisor. P- create a viso or nanocad scale drawing of the area S- students must: accurately compute the scale representation of space include at least 6 different items from the list of choices explain the reasoning for location and choice of items display scale and labelings use of viso or nanocad Other Evidence:

Stage 3 Learning Plan Learning Activities: Gagne Gain Attention: http://www.youtube.com/watch? v=hjGUfavDoV4 Inform leaner of objective:

Elicit performance I do We do You Do model but have student try one on their own, then we discuss and try one as group, and then I present some more helpful guidance to solving

Vocabulary related to ratios/proportions Uses of ratio/proportions Calculation of ratio/proportions Completion of a Real World appplicaton Stimulate recall of prior knowledge: Quick answer sheet: Show students a picture of a ratio and of a proportion What skills/knowledge do you have that may help you in deciding on how to solve or read these? What about that the skill will help you? What other math content does ratios and proportions look similar too? When looking at proportions how do you presume they came up with both sides(what do you notice)? What knowledge help you to figure that out? Present stimulus material: http://www.youtube.com/watch? v=7VRcDu3Q90I&feature=related http://www.youtube.com/watch? v=rpci5WLykVU&feature=related Provide learner guidance -------------

Provide feedback As we discuss the scenarios they worked on as a group, peers and I will be providing feedback to the groups Assess performance Do a quick check around the room of the key components. Thumbs up Thumbs down. Have students write one question that they still have or a statement about the topic Enhance retention and transfer Grasps Model Discussion on essential questions

Differentiation Techniques: - provide a scale already laid out on paper for students and have the place items (more direct guidance) - simplification of the ratios in advance - allow some to create replica on paper
