OUTLINE OF THE GOSPEL OF MARK (v = verse, vv = verses) CHAPTER 1 I. THE WORK OF JOHN, THE BAPTIST: VV 1-8 A.

This was the reason for his preaching. vv 1-3 (The preaching of John fulfilled the prophecies of the Old Testament.) Mal. 3:1, Isa. 40:3 B. This was the urgency of his preaching. v 4 (John preached the baptism of repentance for the remission of sins.) C. This was the fame of his preaching. v 5 (The fame of John became wide spread.) D. This was the way John dressed to preach. v 6 (John was clothed with a camel's skin girdled about his loins.) E. This was the purpose of his preaching. vv 7-8 (John was preparing the way for the coming of Christ.) II. THE BAPTISM OF JESUS: VV 9-11 A. This was the act of His baptism. v 9 (Jesus was baptized by John in the river of Jordan.) B. This was the glory of His baptism. v 10 (The heavens were opened for His glorification.) C. This was blessing of His baptism. v 11 (Jesus was Divinely glorified.) III. THE TEMPTATIONS OF JESUS: VV 12-13 A. This was the place of His temptation. v 12 (Jesus was tempted in the wilderness.) B. This was the length of His temptation. v 13 (Jesus was in the wilderness for forty days and nights.) C. This was the agent of His temptation. v 13 (Satan Himself tempted Jesus.) D. This was the result of His temptation. v 13 (The angels came and ministered unto Him.) IV. JESUS CALLED FOUR DISCIPLES: VV 14-20 A. This was the reason for their called. vv 14-15 (Jesus was preaching the Kingdom of God.) B. This was the call of Simon and Andrew. vv 16-18 1. Simon and Andrew were told that would become fishers of men. v 17 2. Simon and Andrew accepted the call of Jesus because they followed Him. v 18 3. This was the call of James and John vv 19-20 (James and John accepted the call of Jesus and followed Him.)

V. JESUS CAST OUT AN UNCLEAN SPIRIT: VV 21-28 A. This was the place of that miracle. v 21 (This miracle occurred in a Synagogue in Capernaum.) B. This was the circumstance for that miracle. v 21 (The people were astonished by His teachings.) C. These were the reasons for that miracle. vv 23-26 1. Jesus wanted to establish His authority. 2. Jesus desired to demonstrate His compassion. D. These were the results of that miracle. vv 27-28 1. That miracle amazed the people. v 27 2. That miracle engendered His fame. v 28 VI. JESUS HEALED MANY DISEASES: VV 29-34 A. Jesus heals the mother-in-law of Peter. vv 29-31 B. Jesus healed many of the people who were in town. vv 32-34 VII. JESUS WENT ON A PREACHING TOUR: VV 35-39 A. This was His eagerness to preach. v 35 1. Jesus arose early in the morning to prepare Himself for preaching. 2. Each person should arise early in life and prepare himself to meet his God. Eccles. 12:1, Amos 4:12 B. This was the manner in which Jesus prepared Himself for preaching. v 35 1. Jesus prayed unto His God. John 20:17 2. We as Christians should prepare ourselves by obeying the gospel of Christ, and then we could pray unto the Lord our God. Romans 6:16-18, 1 Tim. 2:1-4 C. This was the motivation for His preaching. vv 36-37 1. All of the people were seeking the Lord. 2. We as Christians should show other people how that they can find the Lord their God. Acts 17:24-28 D. This was the zeal which Jesus had to preach. v 39 1. Jesus was motivated by zeal and compassion for lost soul. 2. We as disciples should be motivated by zeal and compassion for lost souls. Prov. 11:30, John 4:35, James 5:19-20 E. These were His works in being a preacher. v 39 1. Jesus worked in the vineyard of the Lord. v 39, John 4:34, John 9:4 2. Jesus finished His work in the vineyard of the Lord. v 39, John 17:4, Rev. 14:13 VIII. JESUS HEALED A LEPER: VV 40-45 A. This was the condition of the leper. v 40 (This man was a leper.)

B. This was his request. v 40 (This leper wanted to be healed.) C. This was his blessing. vv 41-42 (This leper was healed.) D. This was his charge. vv 43-44 (This leper was to show himself unto the priest according to the Law of Moses.) E. This was his happiness. v 45 (This leper told everyone.) CHAPTER 2 I. JESUS HEALED A PALSIED MAN: VV 1-12 A. This was the circumstance for that miracle. vv 1-2 (There was a great crowd gathered to together to hear Jesus preach.) B. This was the need for that miracle. v 3 (There was a man sick of the palsy.) C. These were the blessings of that miracle. vv 4-5 (The man was healed of the palsy, and his sins were forgiven.) D. This was the controversy of that miracle. vv 6-7 (Some of the people thought Jesus had blasphemed because He had forgiven the man of his sins.) E. This was the purpose of that miracle. vv 8-11 (Jesus wanted them to know that He had power to forgive sins.) F. This was the results of the miracle. v 12 (Those people glorified God because of that miracle.) II. JESUS CALLED MATTHEW: VV 13-17 A. This was the call of Matthew. vv 13-14 (Jesus called Matthew, a tax collector, to follow Him.) B. This was the response of Matthew. v 14 (Matthew followed Jesus.) C. These were the results of the call of Matthew. vv 15-17 1. Jesus ate with publicans and sinners. v 15 2. Jesus was criticized for having fellowship with publicans and sinners. v 16 3. Jesus replied that He had not come to call the righteous to repentance, but the sinners to repentance. v 17 III. THE QUESTION CONCERNING FASTING: VV 18-22 A. This was the logical question to ask. v 18 (Jesus was asked why His disciples did not fast?) B. This was the response to that question. vv 19-22 1. It was not the time for fasting because Jesus was with His disciples. v 19 2. There would come a time for His disciples to fast because Jesus would be taken from them. v 20

3. There would be a new dispensation for His disciples. vv 21-22 a). The Law of Moses would be annulled. v 21, Col. 2:14 b). The law of Christ would be established. v 22, John 1:17, Acts 2:1-47 IV. THE TEACHING OF JESUS CONCERNING THE SABBATH: VV 23- 28 A. This was the circumstance for His teaching. vv 23-24 (Jesus and His disciples plucked ears of corn to eat on the Sabbath day.) B. This was the revelation of His teaching. vs 25-26 (When David was hungry, he ate the shewbread which was lawful only for the priests to eat.) 1 Samuel 21:6, Lev. 24:9 C. This was the authority for His teaching. vv 27-28 (Jesus revealed that He was also Lord of the Sabbath day.) CHAPTER 3 I. A MAN WHO HAD A WITHERED HAND WAS HEALED BY JESUS: VV 1-6 A. This was his need to be healed. v 1 (The man had a withered hand.) B. This was the opposition for his being healed. vv 2-3 (It was the Sabbath day.) C. This was the response to his being healed. v 4 (Jesus asked, "It is lawful to do well on the Sabbath day?") D. This was the blessing of his being healed. v 5 (The man was healed.) E. This was the results of his being healed. v 6 (This miracle caused a plot against Jesus.) II. JESUS HEALED MANY PEOPLE AT THE SEASIDE: VV 7-12 A. This was His fame in healing. vv 7-9 (Great multitudes of people were following Jesus.) B. This was His power to heal. v 10 (Jesus proved that He had power to heal.) C. This was His authority in healing. vv 11-12 (Jesus commanded the unclean spirit not to call Him the Son of God.) III. JESUS CHOOSES THE TWELVE APOSTLES: VV 13-19 A. This was the reality of their called. v 13 (Jesus called the twelve apostles unto Him.) B. This was their ordination. v 14 (The apostles were ordained to preach the gospel of Christ.) C. This was their mission. v 14 (The apostles were to preach the gospel of Christ.) D. This was the power which Jesus gave them to preach. v 15 (Jesus gave them power over unclean spirit, and the power to heal the sick.)

E. The names of the apostles are listed in verses 16-19. IV. THE UNPARDONABLE SIN: VV 20-30 A. This was the reason for that teaching. vv 20-22 (Jesus was charged with possessing the powers of Satan.) B. This was the logic for that teaching. vv 23-27 (Jesus wanted them to know that He had power over Satan.) 1 John 3:8 1. If we blaspheme against the Holy Spirit, this means that we would fail to obey the gospel of Christ. Heb. 2:1-4 2. If we blaspheme against the Holy Spirit, this means that we would reject the truth of God. Heb. 10:26-29 V. THE TRUE KINDRED OF JESUS: VV 31-35 A. This was the request of His kindred. vv 31-32 (The kindred of Jesus wanted to see Him.) B. This was the answer of Jesus for His kindred. vv 33-35 (Jesus said, "Whoever does the will of God is the same as my kindred) CHAPTER 4 I. THE PARABLE OF THE SOWER: VV 1-9 A. This was the circumstance for that parable. vv 1-2 (There was a great crowd of people that were following Jesus.) B. This was the sower of the parable. v 3 (A man went forth to sow.) C. This was the seed of the parable. v 4 (The seed was a grain which was sown.) D. This was the field of the parable. vv 4-8 1. There was the wayside ground. v 4 2. There was the stony ground. vv 5-6 3. There was the thorny ground. v 7 4. There was the good ground. v 8 E. This was the admonition of the parable. v 9 (We should hear and understand the meaning of the parable.) II. THE PURPOSE OF THE PARABLES: VV 10-13 A. This was the question which was asked concerning parables. v 10 (The disciples asked Jesus, "Why do you teach in parables?") B. This was the answer which Jesus gave concerning parables. vv 11-13 (It is given unto you to know the mystery of the Kingdom of God.)

III. THIS WAS THE INTERPRETATION OF THE PARABLE OF THE SOWER: VV 14-20 A. The sower in the parable was the preacher. v 14, 2 Tim. 4:1-4 B. The seed in the parable was the word of God. v 14, Heb. 4:12 C. The field in the parable was the heart of man. vv 15-20 1. Those persons who were the wayside hearers in the parable allowed Satan to steal the word of God from their hearts. v 15, 2 Cor. 11:13-15 2. Those persons who were the stony heart hearers in the parable permitted persecutions to hinder them from serving God. vv 16-17, 2 Tim. 3:12, Rev. 2:10 3. Those persons who were the thorny heart hearers in the parable allowed riches to keep them from serving God. vv 18-19, 2 Tim. 6:9-10 4. Those persons who were the good hearted hearers in the parable were obedient unto the laws of God, and produce fruit according to their individual talents. v 20, Heb. 5:8-9, Romans 6:16-18 IV. THESE ARE THE RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE HEARERS: VV 21- 25 A. Spiritual truth should not be hidden. v 21, Psa. 119:105, Matt. 5:14 B. Spiritual truth has been revealed. v 22, 2 Tim. 3:16-17 1. This is the admonition for man to hear the revealed spiritual truth. v 23 (We should hear the word of God because we have ears with which to hear.) Rev. 1:3 2. This is the reason for that admonition to hear with our ears. vv 24-25 (We are accountable unto God.) Heb. 2:1-4 V. THIS IS THE SPIRITUAL GROWTH IN THE KINGDOM OF GOD: VS 26-29 A. This is the planting which takes place in the Kingdom of God. vv 26-27, Matt. 28:18-20 1. The sower is the teacher of the word of God. Heb. 5:14-16 2. The seed is the gospel of Christ. 1 Cor. 15:1-4, Romans 1:14-18 3. The ground is the heart of the people. 2 Tim. 2:1-4, 2 Peter 3:9 B. This is the growing which takes place in the Kingdom of God. v 28, 1 Cor. 3:6-9 1. The blade is the little children (new converts) in the Kingdom of God. 1 John 2:12-14, 1 Peter 2:1-3 2. The young ear is the young men in the Kingdom of God. 1 John 2:1214, 1 Tim. 4:12 3. The grown ear is the fathers in the Kingdom of God. 1 John 2:12-14, Eph. 6:1-4 C. This is the reaping which will take place in the Kingdom of God. v 29, Gal. 6:7-9

1. The sickle is the death of an individual because he has an appointment with death. Heb. 9:27, Romans 5:12 2. The harvest is the judgment at the end of the world. Acts 17:30-31 VI. THE PARABLE OF THE MUSTARD SEED: VV 30-32 (This parable shows how the church grows in size.) VII. JESUS TAUGHT BY USING PARABLES: VV 33-34 A. When Jesus was teaching in public places, He would use parables. B. When Jesus was teaching in private places, He would explain the means of parables. VIII. JESUS CALMED THE STORM: VV 35-41 A. This was their voyage. vv 35-36 (They were sailing in a ship.) B. This was their crisis. v 37 (There arose a great storm.) C. This was their cry. v 38 (They cried, "Master, we are perishing.") D. This was their rebuke. vv 39-40 (They were rebuked for the lack of faith.) E. This was their astonishment. v 41 (They said, "Even the winds obey His voice.) CHAPTER 5 I. THE DEMONIAC OF GADARENES IS HEALED: VS 1-20 A. This was his misery. vv 1-5 (This man cried day and night.) B. This was his hope. vv 6-8 (This man saw Jesus coming unto him.) C. This was his blessing. vv 9-15 (This man was healed.) D. This was to be his testimony. vv 16-20 (This man was to tell all his friends what the Lord had done for him.) II. THE DAUGHTER OF JAIRUS IS RAISED FROM THE DEAD: VS 21- 24, 3543 A. This was her sickness. vv 21-23 (She was near the point of death.) B. This was her hope. v 24 (Jesus was coming unto her.) C. This was her death. v 35 (She died before Jesus could come unto her.) D. This was her resurrection from the dead. vv 36-43 (Jesus raised her from the dead.) III. THE WOMAN WITH THE ISSUE OF BLOOD IS HEALED: VS 25-34 A. This was her fate. vv 25-26 (She had an issue of blood for twelve years.) B. This was her hope. vv 27 (Jesus was in her presence.) C. This was her faith. vv 27-28 (She knew that Jesus could heal her.)

D. This was her blessing. v 29 (She was healed.) E. This was her testimony. vv 30-34 (This woman confessed that she had been healed.)
