Faculty of Engineering and Computing International Prospectus

Coventry University
Coventry University is situated within an impressive 33-acre site in the centre of one of Englands largest and most historic cities, its main building located in University Square opposite the historic architecture of Coventry Cathedral. As well as enjoying the centrality of its location in the Midlands, with accessible transport nationally and internationally, students also benefit from excellent facilities, which include an award-winning 18 million library, a new sports centre, and a purpose-built 35m Student building which opens in September 2011. Courses are designed with employability as a major theme and students benefit from links with major global corporations, in addition to the opportunity of placements both within and outside the university. Coventry provides a unique blend of the old and new, epitomised by the ruins of the old cathedral bombed during World War II, next to its modern successor. The cobbled streets and medieval buildings around the cathedral contrast with the fountains playing in University. One of the major themes of Coventry as a consequence of its cathedral being bombed and rebuilt, is peace and reconciliation. This is reflected in the cultural diversity of the city and the welcome it extends to visitors. Coventry attracts thousands of visitors each year because of its history and its attractions, but it is also a university city and as such offers a wide range of cultural and social opportunities. There are plenty of restaurants, sport centres, cafs, the Belgrade Theatre, an ice-rink and an eight-screen cinema complex, together with a number of significant tourist spots within easy travelling distance of the city, for example Warwick Castle, Stratford-Upon-Avon and Coombe Abbey. Coventry was established in 1043 with the founding of a Benedictine Abbey by Leofric, Earl of Mercia and his wife, Lady Godiva. By the thirteenth century it had become a centre of many textile trades and its non-fading blue cloth became highly sought after throughout Europe. Coventry had become the fourth largest English city by the fourteenth century and on several occasions became the second capital of England with parliament moving there. Coventry continued to thrive and in the eighteenth century enjoyed an industrial boom which led to a massive expansion in its population. In the twentieth century, Coventry had become a centre of the British motor industry, but it also suffered massive devastation during World War II when many of its historic buildings, including the cathedral were bombed. After the war the city was rebuilt, and now it is undergoing more transformation and regeneration in order to consolidate its position of centrality in the Midlands.

About Coventry
Coventry is a lively, multicultural city with a rich history embracing the old and the new. Nowhere is this more evident than in the Cathedral Quarter where the modern architecture and ancient ruins of the two Cathedrals dominate cobbled streets with bustling cafes and restaurants. Walk through Coventrys pedestrianised city-centre and youll see over 1,000 years of English history, ranging from the medieval charm of historic Spon Street to the architectural innovation of Millenium Place. Youll find all the main high street stores and plenty of small specialist shops to cater for your every need.

Culture
If youre looking for a cultural experience, the Herbert Art Gallery and Museum is definitely worth a visit. You may also like to take in a show or two at the Belgrade Theatre, Coventrys premier theatrical venue, highly renowned for staging local and national productions.

Sport
Theres plenty on offer for sport lovers too. The Ricoh Arena, home to Coventry City Football Club is a new development which houses a 32,000 capacity football stadium. This is also the venue for some of the UKs most high profile sports and entertainment events. The 113m multi-purpose development expands over 72 acres and is one of the most prestigious arenas, conference and exhibition centres in the country. There is also a 20m programme underway including a Rugby Stadium and Football Academy of Excellence, in addition we couldnt be closer to the City sports centre which is home to the Olympic sized swimming pool. As we are situated in the centre of England, we are very close to Edgbaston, a venue for international test cricket.

The City
Coventry is close to some of the most historic, cultural and scenic areas of the UK. Tourists and visitors from around the whole world are drawn to the region by Shakespeares literary heritage. His hometown of Stratford-Upon-Avon remains a popular tourist destination. Other places of interest include Royal Leamington Spa, the Castles of Kenilworth and Warwick, and Coombe Park, a 300 acre estate comprising an abbey, formal gardens, woodland nature trails and wildlife.

Local Area
Birmingham International Airport is 15 minutes away from Coventry and Birmingham, Englands second city, is just 25 minutes away. Its National Exhibition Centre is one of the countrys main music venues and is also home to many trade and commercial events. London, the capital of Britain is only 1 hour away by train and Oxford, another popular destination is about 40 minutes away.

Entertainment and Leisure

As a focus for entertainment and leisure, the Citys reputation is rapidly on the increase. There are a variety of places to eat, drink, dance and relax including the 33m Skydome complex. This houses a multi-screen cinema, bars and caf-bars, two nightclubs and quality restaurants. There is also a 4,000 seat arena, a popular concert venue that doubles up as an ice rink for our championship winning ice hockey team Coventry Blaze.

The Future for Engineering and Computing

Coventry University is investing 55 million in a stunning new building which will transform the way Engineering, Mathematics and Computing subjects are taught in the UK and how universities collaborate with industry. The University considers this to be the most important project it has undertaken.
The new centre for the Faculty of Engineering and Computing will be innovative inside and out. Its visually stunning, futuristic exterior will mark it out as an iconic building at the heart of one of the UKs most historic engineering cities. Environmentally, it will be highly sustainable, using a range of technologies including rainwater harvesting, waste water recycling, green roofing, solar thermal energy and biomass boilers. The building will be a living environmental technologies demonstrator and test-bed in its own right. The complete construction will allow exploration, monitoring and evaluation of building performance. Parts of the construction will be exposed, the building management system will be accessible, and realtime data will be provided via sensors positioned throughout the structure. To ensure students learn from this valuable resource on their doorstep, the building data, such as internal temperature, humidity and carbon dioxide levels will be recorded and will be freely available. Inside, it will be equally forward-looking, with a completely fresh approach to organising spaces so they best support new ways of learning. This is a key element to the design of the new building. The aim is to create a community of learners of staff and students who inspire and encourage each other as well as engaging with industry. The new building will foster Activity Led Learning (ALL) which the Faculty is promoting as the way forward for 21st century graduates. Activity Led Learning is a new way of educating engineers for the future by equipping them with the skills which industry wants. It is designed to give them experience of solving real problems against real deadlines, using practical skills, teamworking and creativity. The building will be a fantastic learning environment with: a 2,000 metre square laboratory which is highly connected, flexible and visible. collaborative classrooms and IT rooms where students can sit in groups of 6 or 9 around tables with retractable computer screens dynamic lecture theatres including one in the round which can be split into two semi-circular lecture areas. easy access to the latest industry standard software for students bookable learning booths and IT workspaces caf in the atrium soft seating areas for informal chats a floating balcony over the atrium for semi-private study area open plan administration offices behind glass walls Designed by leading international architects Arup Associates, and being constructed by Balfour Beatty, the new building will rival the best internationally and will create a significant regional and national resource.
