PREFACE
This standard was prepared by the Association’s Committee on Fluid Power Systems
and Components. It supersedes AS B320—1972, Inch Dimensions of Toroidal Sealing
Rings and Their Housings (‘O’ Rings).
This standard is based on a soft metric conversion of AS B320, but the tables have
been extended to cover the range of O-rings shown in SAE Aerospace Standard
AS 568A, Aerospace Size Standards for O-rings. The tables covering groove
dimensions have been expanded to cover static and dynamic applications with
variations set out according to internal and external pressure. Additional information
has been added in regard to O-rings and housings for parallel thread tube fittings.
An imperial/metric conversion table for shaft and cylinder diameters is given in an
appendix to assist in identifying the actual imperial sizes.

FLUID POWER—O-RINGS AND HOUSINGS—INCH SERIES, METRIC CONVERSION

1 SCOPE. This standard specifies the dimensions
of elastomeric O-rings which are used for sealing com-
ponents against ingress of contaminants or egress of
fluids under dynamic and static conditions in fluid
power applications.
It also specifies the shape and dimensions of housings
for O-rings when used with and without anti-extrusion
back-up washers.

Each O-ring shall be designated by a size number in
accordance with Table 1 and this number shall be used
for ordering purposes, e.g. O-ring Size No 110.
4 TOLERANCES. The tolerances for mating metal
parts of the O-ring housing should be selected by the
designer. In all instances it is important that the maxi-
mum radial clearance G/2 quoted in Tables 2, 3, 4, and
6 not be exceeded.
The tolerances on O-ring housing dimensions for

2 REFERENCED DOCUMENTS. The following

Standard)
3 DIMENSIONS AND SIZE NUMBERS. The
nominal dimensions of the sealing rings, together with
the tolerances to which the sealing rings are normally
manufactured, are given in Table 1 (see also Fig. 1).
Limiting diameters of O-ring recesses are given in
Tables 2 to 7.

The tolerances on housing dimensions for parallel
thread tube fitting O-ring boss gaskets shall be as
given in Fig. 7 and Table 7.
5 SURFACE FINISH. To obtain maximum life
from the O-ring, the surface roughness of the parts in
contact with the O-ring shall not exceed the rating
shown in Figs 2, 3, 5, and 6, and in Tables 2, 3, and 4.
Surface roughness parameters, i.e. arithmetic mean
deviation (R a), shall be in accordance with AS 2536.
6 TRIANGULAR TYPE SEATINGS. Triangular
type seatings shall conform to the dimensions given in
Fig. 6 and Table 6.
