PREFACE
This Standard was prepared by the Standards Australia Committee MN/4, Heavy Mineral
Sands under the direction of the Multitechnics Standards Policy Board, as a method for the
analysis of ilmenite. It is based on the method given in AS 2864.1—1987, Methods for the
analysis of rutile, Part 1: Determination of titanium content—Titrimetric method.

Methods for the analysis of ilmenite
1 SCOPE
This Standard sets out a titrimetric method, using aluminium reduction and ammonium
iron(III) sulfate titration, for the determination of the titanium content of ilmenite.
The method is applicable to ilmenite concentrates containing in excess of 45% TiO2. The
presence of chromium, vanadium and niobium, each at concentrations of up to 1 percent

3 PRINCIPLE
The test portion is sintered with sodium peroxide, leached and filtered to remove chromium
and vanadium. The filter paper and titanium product are wet-ashed in two stages with
sulfuric acid and sodium hydrogen sulfate (or sodium pyrosulfate); the product is fused with
sodium hydrogen sulfate (or sodium pyrosulfate). This residue is dissolved in sulfuric and
hydrochloric acids and the titanium is reduced with aluminium metal in the presence of
citric acid, added to overcome interference from niobium. The titanium is titrated with
ammonium iron(III) sulfate solution using potassium thiocyanate indicator.
4 REAGENTS
4.1 General
During the analysis, use only reagents of recognized analytical reagent grade (except for
4.2.3 and 4.2.4), and only distilled water or water of equivalent purity.
4.2 Solids
4.2.1 Sodium peroxide (Na2 O2 )
Fine powder.
NOTE: Sodium peroxide should be kept away from humidity and should not be used once it has
begun to agglomerate.
