Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (abbreviated BSNL) is an Indian stateowned telecommunications company headquartered in New Delhi, India. It is the largest provider of fixed telephony and fourth largest mobile telephony provider in India, and is also a provider of broadband services. However, in recent years the company's revenue and market share plunged into heavy losses due to intense competition in Indian telecommunications sector. BSNL is India's oldest and largest communication service provider (CSP). It had a customer base of 95 million as of June 2011. It has footprints throughout India except for the metropolitan cities of Mumbai and New Delhi, which are managed by Mahanagar Telephone Nigam (MTNL). Its responsibilities include improvement of the already impeccable quality of telecom services, expansion of telecom services in all villages and instilling confidence among its customers.
Brief overview
Telephones were originally connected directly together in pairs. Each user would have a separate telephone wired to various places he might wish to reach. This became inconvenient when people wanted to communicate with many other people using telephones, so the telephone exchange was invented. Each telephone could then be connected to other local ones, thus inventing the local loop and the call. Soon, nearby exchanges were connected by trunk, and eventually distant ones were as well. In modern times, most telephones are plugged into telephone jacks. The jacks are connected by inside wiring to a drop wire which connects the building to a cable. Cables usually bring a large number of drop wires from all over a district access network to one wire centre or telephone exchange. When the user of a telephone wants to make a telephone call, equipment at the exchange examines the dialled telephone number and connects that telephone line to another in the same wire centre, or to a trunk to a distant exchange. Most of the exchanges in the world are connected to each other, forming the public switched telephone network (PSTN). By the end of the 20th century almost all were stored program control exchanges. After the middle of the 20th century, fax and data became important secondary users of the network created to carry voices, and late in the century, parts of the network were upgraded with ISDN and DSL to improve handling of such traffic. Today, telephony has been digitized and has merged into digital telephony, the use of digital technology in the provision of telephone services and systems.Telephone calls can be provided digitally, but are restricted to cases in which the last mile is digital, or where the conversion between digital and analogue signals takes place
inside the telephone. This advancement has reduced costs in communication- and improved the quality of voice services. This has been found useful for new network services (ISDN) that transfer data speedily over telephone lines. Another important concept that has been merged into telephony is computer telephony integration, which enables computers to know about and control phone functions such as making and receiving voice, fax, and data calls with telephone directory services and caller identification. The integration of telephone software and computer systems is a major development in the evolution of the automated office. The term is used in describing the computerized services of call centres, such as those that direct your phone call to the right department at a business you're calling. It's also sometimes used to describe the ability to use your personal computer to initiate and manage phone calls (in which case you can think of your computer as your personal call centre). CTI is not a new concept and has been used in the past in large telephone networks, but only dedicated call centres could justify the costs of the required equipment installation. Primary telephone service providers are offering information services such as automatic number identification, which is a telephone service architecture that separates CTI services from call switching and will make it easier to add new services. Dialled Number Identification Service (DNIS) on a scale is wide enough for its implementation to bring real value to business or residential telephone usage. A new generation of applications (middleware) is being developed as a result of standardization tend availability of low cost computer telephony links.
Recent developments
The term's scope has been broadened with the advent of the different new communication technologies. In its broadest sense, the terms encompasses phone communication, Internet calling, mobile communication, faxing, voicemail and video conferencing. Telephony's initial idea returns to POTS, (an acronym for "plain old telephone service") technically called the PSTN (public-switched telephone network). This system is being fiercely challenged by and to a great extent yielding to Voice over IP (VoIP) technology, which is also commonly referred to as IP Telephony and Internet Telephony. IP telephony is a modern form of telephony which uses the TCP/IP protocol popularized by the Internet to transmit digitized voice data. Also, unlike traditional phone service, IP telephony service is relatively unregulated by government. In the United States, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) regulates phone-to-phone connections, but says they do not plan to regulate connections between a phone user and an IP telephony service provider. Using the Internet, calls travel as packets of data on shared lines, avoiding the tolls of the PSTN. The challenge in IP telephony is to deliver the voice, fax, or video packets in a dependable flow to the user. Much of IP telephony focuses on that challenge.
SERVICES Apart from vast network expansions, especial emphasis has given for introducing latest technologies and new services like I-NET, INTERNET, ISDN (INTEGRATED SERVICES DIGITAL NETWORK), IN (INTELLIGENT NETWORK), GSM and WLL (WIRELESS IN LOCAL LOOP) services etc. Now BSNL has also entered in mobile communication. BSNL has all the new services send technological advantages, which are available with any well, developed Telecom network anywhere else in the country. WiMax: BSNL has introduced Indias first 4th Generation High Speed Wireless Broadband Access Technology with the minimum speed of 256kbps. The focus of this service is mainly rural customer where the wired broadband facility not available.
Broadband Service
Broadband is the nonspecific term for high-speed digital Internet access. To state the obvious, broadband indicates a means of connectivity at a high or broad bandwidth. There are the various ways to define the broadband: Term for evolving digital technologies that provide customers a high-speed data network connection Provides signal switched facility offering integrated access to voice, data, video, and interactive delivery services The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) defines broadband as an advanced telecommunications capability Delivers services & facilities with an upstream and downstream speed of 200 Kbps or more. Range varies from 128 Kbps to 100 Mbps. In terms of infrastructure for broadband services NIB has put India at par with most advanced nations. The services that are supported includes:
Always-on broadband access to the Internet for residential and business customers Content based services Internet Protocol TV (IPTV) Games on Demand Music and Video on Demand Voice and Video over Broadband IP Telephony Distance learning Messaging: plain and feature rich Multi-site MPLS VPNs with Quality of Service (QoS) guarantees
NEED OF BROADBAND
The concept of socio economy has an important role in the field of communication of data, audio, video, speech or any other kind of application. It is an era of CAPEX and OPEX. Service providers and customers both are interested in economy with fastest tool of communication with more throughput. Traditional circuit switching network are
not supporting the effective fast communication for new applications. This has emerged out with the evolution of packet switching network. Communication of data for various applications is feasible to carry with different throughput. The service provider converged voice and data network promises to be implemented as nodes in a neighbourhood or remote switches in regional locations. The Internet, e-mail, web sites, software downloads, file transfers: they are all now part of the fabric of doing business. But until now, it has not been possible for businesses to fully take advantage of the benefits that technology can truly deliver. The reason for this is a simple one - a lack of bandwidth. Even for small businesses, narrowband dial-up access is no longer sufficient. It simply takes too long to do basic tasks, like downloading a large file, and is increasingly being recognized as insufficient and inconvenient. Kim Maxwell in his book-"Residential Broadband: An Insider's Guide to the Battle for the Last Mile" has grouped potential residential broadband applications into three general categories: "professional activities (activities related to users' employment), "entertainment activities (from game playing to movie watching), and "consumer activities (all other non-employment and non-entertainment activities).as follows: \
Professional Activities:
Telecommuting (access to corporate networks and systems to support working at home on a regular basis) Video conferencing (one-to-one or multi-person video telephone calls) Home-based business (including web serving, e-commerce with customers, and other financial functions) Home office (access to corporate networks and e-mail to supplement work at a primary office location)
Entertainment Activities:
Web surfing (as today, but at higher speeds with more video content) Video-on-demand (movies and rerun or delayed television shows) Video games (interactive multi-player games)
Consumer Activities:
Shopping (as today, but at higher speeds with more video content)
Telemedicine (including remote doctor visits and remote medical analyses by medical specialists) Distance learning (including live and pre-recorded educational presentations) Public services (including voting and electronic town hall meetings) Information gathering (using the Web for non-entertainment purposes) Photography (editing, distributing, and displaying of digital photographs) Video conferencing among friends and family These applications have different bandwidth requirements, and some of them are still out of reach today. For example, all of the "professional" activities will likely be supported with less than 1.0 Mbps of bandwidth. Similarly, web surfing and home shopping will be supported with less than 1.0 Mbps of bandwidth. Movies and video, however, demand more bandwidth. Feature length movies can probably be delivered with 1.5 Mbps of bandwidth, but broadcast quality video will probably require more perhaps as much as 6.0 Mbps. Moreover, if high definition television ("HDTV") is widely accepted as a new broadcast standard, that quality of video would require almost 20.0 Mbps of bandwidth much higher than the current broadband technologies will support. Thus, although the technology is moving toward flexible, high-quality video-on-demand, the necessary speed is probably still more than a few years away from becoming a reality.
Virtual Networks
The private virtual networks (LAN/WAN) can be used in an ample variety of multimedia services, like bank accounts and central offices.
Education by distance
Education will not have any limits to reach from source to destination. Along with the traditional school a concept of remote leaning center is emerged out and popular for various courses. There is no limit of distance, area or location in such distance learning. The student situated in the remote station can intervene directly to his class with a double system via videoconference, whilst this happens, simultaneously, the file ex change
Telework
Organization firm workers that incorporate communication systems via satellite, can work remotely connecting directly to their head offices Internet by a high speed connection that permits users to work efficiently and comfortable.
Telemedicine
Doctors situated in different clinics can stay in contact and consult themselves directly to other regional medical centers, using videoconference and the exchange of high quality images, giving out test results and any type of information. Also rural zone can have the opinion of specialists situated in remote hospitals quickly and efficiently.
Electronic commerce
Electronic commerce is a system that permits users to pay goods and services by Internet. Thanks to this service, any person connected to the network can ad quire such services with independence from the place that he is situated and during the 24 hours, simply using a portable computer.

Multicast video services, video-on-demand, etc. through the Broadband Remote Access Server (BRAS) To provide a means to bill for the aforesaid services by either time-based or volumebased billing. It shall provide the customer with the option to select the services through web server. Pre-paid and post paid broadband services.
BROADBAND NETWORK
The broadband services reached to customer from the three providers. Basically these are Service Provider, Network Provider and Access Provider. The role of Network Provider is to provide the services offered to customer through the access extended by Access Provider. There are various types of networks which are capable of transmitting and managing the broadband traffic to desired nodes or locations. Wire line access technology through DSL, Fiber, and Cable etc are generally adopts: IP based Network ATM Network Wireless access technology through Wi-Fi, Wi-Max. 3G mobile etc provides wireless access to ingress point of any core network any migrates to Internet world.
