GRADS RECEIVE NOMINATIONS

Below are some of the GRAMMY-winning projects our grads have contributed to:

British pop sensation Adele may have swept the 54th Annual GRAMMY Awards, but she did leave a little room for some other great artists. Looking at the results, we were happy to see a number of Full Sail alumni represented on this years honored projects. In total, 23 graduates of our Recording Arts program were credited as assistants, engineers, and mixers on 12 GRAMMY-winning albums and singles. Of these grads, alum Brad Blackwood took home his own statue for mastering Alison Krauss & Union Stations hit Paper Airplane, which won for Best Engineered Album Non-Classical and Best Bluegrass Album. The record beat out other top nominees like Gillian Welchs The Harrow & The Harvest and Seth Gliers The Next Right Thing. Many GRAMMY-winning projects featured collaborations between multiple grads, including Chris Browns F.A.M.E., which won Best R&B Album, and included the work of grads Iain Findlay, Ryan Kelly, and Michael Congdon. Drew Bollman, David Bryant, and Seth Morton worked together on Taylor Swifts Mean, winner for Best Country Solo Performance and Best Country Song. We were also excited by the diversity of music genres our grads were represented in this year with credits on the winners for Best Gospel Song, Best Reggae Album, and even Best Musical Theater Album. The 54th Annual GRAMMY Awards were a celebration of the range and quality of music released over the past year, and wed like to congratulate all of the alumni credited on winning projects as well as the dozens of others featured on the full lineup of nominees.

HBOs Emmy-winning Boardwalk Empire television series takes viewers back to prohibitionera Atlantic City with a gritty portrait of a pivotal time in the nations history. Helping to realize the look of that world is Digital Arts & Design grad Kelsey Randle effects compositor for Brainstorm Digital. Kelseys collaboration with the other artists at Brainstorm is helping to provide a rich sense of immersion that not every period drama is able to capture something that continues to resonate with viewers, as well as her own instincts as a visual artist. I had my heart set on compositing pretty early on at Full Sail, so this has been an amazing opportunity, she says.

Full Sail is proud to announce that three grads were nominated for the 64th Emmy Awards. Chad Hughes, sound effects editor for the CW spy series Nikita, was nominated for Outstanding Sound Editing for a Series. Jeremy Balko, ADR mixer on the hit series Dexter, was nominated for Outstanding Sound Mixing for a Comedy or Drama Series. BRINGING THE ELDER SCROLLS V: SKYRIM TO LIFE

TREY SHARP ,
WORLD ARTIST
COMPUTER ANIMATION GRAD
People talk about getting lost in their favorite video games, but they usually dont mean that literally. For the Elder Scrolls series, however, losing your way is actually part of the fun. The game is a massive open-world adventure packed with vast landscapes, bustling cities, and countless hidden areas. Full Sail Computer Animation grad Milton Trey Sharp was lucky enough to work as a world artist on the games impressive artistic achievement that helped it win Game of the Year at the 2011 Spike Video Game Awards. The Elder Scrolls was just an amazing experience, Trey says. Essentially how it worked is that the whole world was broken up into quadrants Theyre all just blank too, theres nothing there, so you have to sculpt height maps, paint the textures, and make the terrain look interesting. So in one area youll make snow, and then a path through the snow, and maybe some of it is stained red from an animal carcass. Then youre placing trees and everything else that exists in that area. It was a lot of work. Based on the sheer size and number of quests available, making each new area look unique, while still feeling like a seamless whole was another challenge Trey faced. Taking a step back to look at the amount

ENGINEERING

BEYONC
Youve teamed with Beyonc on a couple different projects. How did that partnership start? A friend of mine used to work with Destinys Child and he just called me one day and asked if I could come in and record Beyonc, and I was like "Of course, absolutely!" That first session went very smoothly so they called me in again. The rest is history. What was it like working together on the 4 sessions? That project by far was the biggest undertaking Ive been a part of. It took a year, we recorded on three different continents, in about 10 different studios. I also got the chance to be more hands-on with this than any other album Ive worked on. She noticed that I have a good pop ear, so I got a little bit of freedom to get creative. Whats the most rewarding part of the recording process for you? For me its going out and seeing the reaction to the songs that Ive worked on. Beyonc did four shows at Roseland Ballroom in New York for this album, and to be able to hear those songs live in front of an audience was just amazing. Those are the moments that I live for watching the fans who arent in on the recording process get as excited as we are about the songs, or even more so. With all of your success, what keeps driving you in your career? My goals are changing and evolving all the time. How can I improve on what Ive done, how can I mix more songs, how can I produce more? Its never-ending. Theres always something new in the music industry, and thats what keeps me excited to be doing this.

DJ SWIVEL, ENGINEER
Jordan Young has definitely kept himself busy since graduating from Full Sails Recording Arts program. Working under the name DJ Swivel, hes built a successful career in the New York music scene as a producer, mixer, and engineer on a number of platinum albums and singles. Jordans first big break came after he landed an internship working as assistant engineer on Fabolous' hit album From Nothin' to Somethin'. That early success opened up a wealth of opportunities, and would help him create a partnership with Beyonc. Jordan has worked as mixer on the double platinum I Am World Tour DVD, as well as engineer on her number one album 4. Its been an inspiring run of success, and to learn more about his experiences in the industry we sat down with Jordan during his recent return visit to the Full Sail campus and talked about his credits, work ethic, and the recording of Beyoncs 4.

GAME OF
THE YEAR
of content packed into the game disc, you can only imagine the unified effort it took to create an immersive experience of that scope. Its both the intimate and grandiose that make Trey appreciate having been able to contribute to The Elder Scrolls canon and it reaffirms why he chose to pursue a career in game graphics. Being at Bethesda was an amazing opportunity for me, people spend their whole careers trying to get there, and Im really proud of that work, he says. . . . Its really the perfect happy medium for me. I get to be creative and express myself artistically, and I couldnt imagine doing anything else now.

AWARD WINNER FOR

2011 Spike Video Game

Q&A
Youve had the opportunity to work with so many iconic artists. At what point in your career did you get used to being alongside that level of talent in the studio? It still kind of surprises me sometimes, but its always felt normal. Ive been in the studio with Mariah Carey, Kanye, Diddy, and they just need to get a job done, and youre there to facilitate what they want. So theres no sense in being nervous, you just have to go in and do what you do. That attitude has obviously made a good impression. How important has the personal aspect of working in the studio been to your success? Having the right attitude is really essential, and Ive met so many assistants who have come and gone because they just dont have it. At the end of the day these artists are coming into a place where they want to be entirely comfortable, so a lot of your job is being able to connect with them and having the right temperament.

BOBBY SATTLER, ART DIRECTOR

For Digital Arts & Design graduate Bobby Sattler, his two main passions manifested early in life. The first, unsurprisingly, was a knack for trying to communicate ideas visually. "I always made art and I was always interested in art as long as I can remember," he says. "But thinking back on when I was about 12, because of what I do now, I know essentially that what I was doing was early graphic design work." His second love, skateboarding, came around the age of 13 when he received his first skateboard. It was just all over after that. Thats pretty much all my life revolved around, he said. Bobby decided on this career path as a young teenager when he got a job at Ambush, an area skate shop. He began to design T-shirts and skateboard graphics for the shop, and eventually moved on to ads and larger projects. Bobby also met a group of action sports athletes sponsored by Ambush who were students at or recent graduates of Full Sail. Intrigued, he and his father took a trip to Florida. He enrolled soon after, particularly enjoying the chance to develop his skills in web design and motion graphics, but with his eyes still set on the prize a relocation to Southern California and a job at a skateboard company. Now Bobby has found a way to merge both of his passions into his professional life at Element Skateboards. As art director for the company, he oversees the entire aesthetic direction of the brands marketing, from lifestyle photo shoots, to yearly catalog designs, down to clothing hang tags. All of this adds up to nonstop advertising campaigns, tag design, event signage, and 22 total yearly catalogs. Although that doesnt leave a lot of time for outside pursuits, Bobby looks forward to each packed days new set of challenges.

Recording Arts graduate John Blais picked up his first Latin Grammy statue this fall for his work as an engineer and mixer on Calle 13s hit album Entren Los Que Quieran. John got his start at Full Sail after meeting Dave Rat, owner of Rat Sound Systems, while he was working a Red Hot Chili Peppers concert John was attending. I knew Dave from seeing him in magazines, and he noticed me staring at all this gear, and asked if I wanted to check it out, he says. So he brought me into his area and let me hang out during the entire show. Standing behind them was an instructor from Full Sail he gave me a card to the school, and I think it was just destiny.

BE HUMBLE AND ALWAYS BE LEARNING.

"I THINK THE MOST IMPORTANT THING IN THIS BUSINESS IS TO

the owner of Playbach Studio, Ramon Martinez. After building Ramons trust as a studio assistant, John was given opportunities to help behind the recording console as assistant engineer, and finally, engineer and mixer. This would lead to him joining the sessions for Calle 13s Entren Los Que Quieran, which would eventually net a recordbreaking 10 Latin Grammy nominations. The album ended up winning nine of the awards, including Album of the Year, Record of the Year, and Song of the Year. John has a big confidence in himself, he wasnt afraid of anything when he started, and thats something you have to have in the studio, Ramon says. You really need to build the confidence of the client. If people are paying money to come to a studio and record, they dont want to feel like theres a rookie on the board. Because of that hes getting really big on the island.

CREATING GAMES FOR

Childrens video games make up a considerable chunk of the market, with developers creating unique content for consoles, handheld devices, and educational platforms like LeapFrog. Game Development grad Sean Coughlin has built his career at two of the genres largest developers Disney Interactive Media Group, and his most recent job at Nickelodeon Virtual Worlds Group. Sean got his start at Disney Interactive Media, landing an internship to help coordinate the production of titles like Cars 2, Phineas and Ferb: Across the Second Dimension, and Disney Princess: Enchanting Storybooks. After wrapping up the Disney internship, Sean joined Nickelodeon Virtual Worlds Group as coordinator of premium businesses for Monkey Quest a free-to-play role-playing game. Sean is in charge of managing content by handling daily updates to the site, brainstorming game ideas, working with the artists and developers to implement them, and testing products prior to launch. Nickelodeon is an awesome company with a lot of great ideas, and its super exciting to be working in the free-to-play space with them, he says. Its a completely different business model, and kind of a revolution thats picking up steam because more studios are seeing the benefit. By focusing on the childrens game market, Sean has been able to experiment with evolving areas of the industry, and help define how business models like free-to-play will continue to offer gamers new experiences. Its an envious position for a developer to be in, and hes continually inspired by the new opportunities hes discovered in gaming since graduating from Full Sail.

FULL SAIL GRADS REBRANDING WORK WINS HIM PROMAX GOLD AWARD
Full Sail Film grad Jeff Pinilla was recently honored at the 2011 PromaxBDA Awards with a Gold award for an innovative print campaign he created for CW affiliate WPIX11 in New York City. Jeff, producer and editor, developed the campaign to rebrand their local news team. I wanted to do a full-blown spread of our news cast like a Rolling Stone or Vanity Fair cover," he says. The resulting images feature a stylized ensemble of their news anchors in front of a black background, surrounded by scattered newspapers, snow-filled television sets, and vintage office furniture. Every other news station uses two heads smiling with a different logo at the bottom. I wanted something that screamed a vibe, where you know exactly who it is when you see it, he says. The images were blown up and used prominently throughout the New York subway system, which generated strong feedback. Its just cool to know that people are admiring the picture, he says. I remember the first time I got on the subway, I saw this guy looking at it kind of nodding his head because he really liked it. That was a great moment.

FULL SAIL GRAD NAMED ORLANDO FILM COMMISSIONER

Film and Entertainment Business grad Sheena Carlisle Fowler has been active in the Central Florida entertainment community ever since she finished her degree. She worked as an associate producer for Orlandos WMFE Public Broadcasting System along with serving as the regions coordinator of film and entertainment. This experience has helped her reach the honor of being named Orlando Film Commissioner and associate director of the Metro Orlando Film & Entertainment Commission. Sheena is in charge of creating marketing initiatives that highlight Orlando as a premier film and television production location. Each day is a surprise and is different from the next . . . I also love working with our fabulously talented crew base in the region. We are so fortunate to have such a great group of professionals here in Metro Orlando, she says.

RAGE

FULL SAIL GRADS ON ID SOFTWARES

id Software defined the first person shooter, and their latest title, Rage, has been praised for its expansive apocalyptic setting and inventive gameplay. Helping realize that vision were seven Full Sail grads Jeffrey Farrand, Christopher Hays, Jon Lietz, Juno Madden, Dan Martinez, Steven Serafin, and Grant Shonkwiler. The most striking characteristic of this game is the visuals, due to the attention to detail used in its vast landscapes and fluid character models. Its funny because my first day at the studio I looked at someones computer screen, and thought Oh wow, thats a cool background picture, Juno says. Then he just picked up a controller and started moving around in that world. It blew me away. I didnt realize it was the game. Those impressive visuals are supported by equally dynamic gameplay, which makes this game such a hit. You dont realize when youre sitting at your desk how big a game like this is, so its been great to see how much people really enjoy what we made because a lot of work went into it, Shonkwiler says.

RECRUITMENT

EVENTS
NATHAN MORRIS

Throughout the year, various companies visit our campus to meet and network with Full Sail students.

BOYZ II MEN
FOUNDING MEMBER VISITS FULL SAIL
Full Sail Live 1 was packed to capacity with students eager to hear from Boyz II Men founding member Nathan Morris. In between Florida dates on the groups current US tour, the singer visited Full Sail University to tour the campus, talk about his 20+ years in the music industry, and answer questions from Full Sail students. Morris kicked off his visit to Full Sail with a tour around campus, and got a firsthand look at the equipment and classrooms our students get to work in. After his tour, he was welcomed onto the Full Sail Live 1 stage by Recording Arts Program Manager Brandon Egerton. Morris spoke with Egerton about Boyz II Mens early beginnings at the Philadelphia High School for Creative and Performing Arts, where he and fellow founding group member Marc Nelson first met. Morris shared details about the group dynamics touching on Michael McCarys departure, how it affected the team, and how they have been able to stay together for such a long period of time since. He shared his views on the current state of the ever-evolving music business, and which artists hes a fan of including Beyonc, Chris Brown, Usher, and Ne-Yo. Morris shared the highlights and low points of the groups successful career, as well as offered advice from his experience in the industry to students. Most importantly, the number one lesson that has stood out to Morris over the years has been to make sure youre doing what you love because at the end of the day, your work should be fulfilling and meaningful.

Full Sail has recently welcomed several companies to our campus. From what its like in the industry, to their own personal experiences, to what it takes to be a part of their team, the topics that come up at recruitment events are always a great resource for students. Below are a few of the companies that have recently visited:

ESPN DEMONSTRATES NEWEST TECHNOLOGY
Full Sail University, EA SPORTS, and ESPNs emerging technology team recently joined together to demonstrate ESPNs newest application EA SPORTS GameView. This latest augmented reality application allows ESPN analysts to have total control of a play on a 70-inch touch screen built into a tabletop. Full Sail faculty and students were on hand to help develop the technology, and to prepare the Full Sail University Sports Lab Powered by ESPN for the first demonstration of the application. During the presentation, analyst Desmond Howard demonstrated how the technology allows hosts to move 3D virtual players of their choice, run plays as they choose, zoom in, rotate the field, and telestrate all in real-time using a suite of tools at their fingertips. We have some progressive thinkers at both Full Sail and ESPN, Howard said. Everyone has been dedicated and committed to getting this done the right way. Rapper N.O.R.E., also known as Noreaga, was on campus to shoot a music video for his single, Lehhhgooo, for his upcoming sixth studio album, S.U.P.E.R.T.H.U.G. The song features another heavy hitter, Busta Rhymes, plus appearances by Waka Flocka Flame and The Game. The video was shot on one of the campus soundstages. It was directed by Film grad Josue Sway Mendez and produced by Film grad and Full Sail instructor Carl Verna. Several Full Sail students contributed their efforts by working on set and behind the scenes.
