Stand up for the Arts! is our slogan. And, Stand Up is just what the Arts Community did. These past 12 months have etched deep memories. Collectively we have explored new ground for Arts and Culture in Polk County. At times, we stood at the edge of the precipice, but stood firm in our support for the Arts. At times we were unsure of our path, but we pushed forward. At times, all we had to hold onto was hope. Hope that the community of the Arts would radiate a message that would be heard.

Dan Clark

Together we formed an alliance that spoke. And, together we spoke with a voice that was heard. Together we saw the Board of County Commissioners support changes to the Tourism and Development Tax Ordinance that would restore resources to Arts and Culture. Together we witnessed the creation of new life for Arts and Culture. Now, we move forward. What can we accomplish? Whatever it will be, will be stronger if we continue to maintain our collective voice. I am deeply grateful for those of you who labored with us, stood behind us, and pushed us to open our eyes to the potentials that the Arts offer Polk County. You have reason to stand proud of what you have enabled us to accomplish this year. Now, the real task lies before us. Please continue to Stand together and create a thriving arts community. The future is ours. Come join us as we take the field! Together, our collective voice can forge significant accomplishments that will form a future that we will be proud of. Dan Clark

Executive Director
As we enter the 2012 fall season we celebrate the 2nd Annual Heart of the Arts month in participation with the National Arts and Humanities month. As the countys designated arts agency, representing the Cultural Arts Council, Im excited to have so much to work with as we strive to market our county and communities as a leading cultural destination in the heart of Florida. Its more than just entertainment, its about jobs. As a council member of Americans for the Arts, Florida Chambers Six Pillars Caucus, Division of Cultural Affairs and Florida Cultural Alliance there is a collaboration we are all focused on The Arts is Part of the Solution! The Arts means jobs, the Meri Mass Arts attracts businesses, the arts attract high skill, high wage workers, the Arts is critical in preparing our students for the 21st Century workforce and sustains our communities. In the state of Florida the Creative Industries is one of the Top 5 Job Sectors and critical in economic development and a reason for the focus Culture Builds Florida campaign in Tallahassee. This is true in Polk County as well as the arts employs over 2300 people! The play, the dance, the concert, the museum exhibit you attend is The Product. The preparation for that event is the manufacturing. In preparation of the product our organizations create jobs and hire local; printers, caterers, designers, tech, lighting, sound, film, advertising, etc., (too many to list!) Culminating in economic impact and tourism. As you browse the calendar of events in this publication or visit our event web site (www.polkarts.org) it is obvious there are so many events, so little time! There is something for everyone, all ages and interests and I encourage you to get out and do something different with family and friends and experience all that we have to offer in the Cultural Arts. Art and Culture is the fabric and identity of any community and is certainly true in Polk County. Meri Mass

Gallery 2125 is a unique Art Gallery located within Lakeland Funeral Home. A Funeral Home? WHY would you put a Art Gallery in a Funeral Home?? It is the most asked question and the answer is simple. It is good for our families and our community. When one is faced with visiting a Funeral Home due to the loss of a love one, they often wish they were anywhere else. It can be overwhelming. The Gallery offers that place. By renovating a rarely used room, local residents and artists now enjoy a place to visit where the art is calming and thought provoking while being displayed in in a bright and comfortable atmosphere, offering a place of solice and reflection. In partnership with Platform Art, exhibits are changed every three months and focus on local artists using all types of media. An afterhours Wine and Cheese Reception with live music is held at the opening of each exhibit, with the exception of the Childrens Show Exhibit in February that offers a lighter fare. Artist may choose to sell a displayed piece with 20% of proceeds going to a local childrens charity. Lakeland Funeral Home does NOT receive any proceeds of any art sale. The Gallery is also open to the public during regular business hours free of charge and we welcome you to visit. Please dont forget to sign the Register Book and Let Us Know What You Think! Lakeland Funeral Home and Memorial Gardens is located at 2125 US Hwy 98 South, Lakeland FL 33801. Phone: (863) 686-2125 and on the web at www.lakelandfuneralhome.com. A Pulitzer-Prize Winning-Money-Losing Season

By Norman Small, Producing & Founding Director of Theatre Winter Haven
Top Dog/Underdog, Anna of the Tropics, The Kentucky Cycle, Dinner with Friends, I Am My Own Wife---heard of em, right? Sure, if you are an addicted Thespian, do the NY Times crossword puzzle or serve on the Pulitzer prize committee. See, those committee guys are supposed to vote on the best written play, not the most popular. If winning was based on number of performances then Andrew Lloyd Webers Phantom of the Opera might have claimed the prize. It just celebrated 10,000 (thats ten thousand) performances, and thats just on Broadway (Webbers show royalties alone would allow him to purchase France). Or perhaps Les Miserables should have won the Pulitzer, after all, that epic has been seen by 60 million people worldwide, including Andrew, and has had more Broadway revivals than Joan Rivers facelifts. No, neither won the big boy prize though. In fact, none of the winners mentioned above had more than a few hundred Broadway performances, and some of them never even appeared on Broadway. How could this be? The reason for both those two money-making machines not taking home the brass ring is because the award is given for a distinguished play by an American playwright, preferably original in its source and dealing with American life. The prize is only for a home-grown hero.. Well, if its so distinguished, why is it that many of the American winners hardly find a plank to play on. For grins, imagine the 2004 winner with the title, I Am My Own Wife coming soon to your home town. Maybe we have to first look at how this all began. In the late 19th century there were these two innovative newspapers, the New York World and St. Louis Post-Dispatch, both owned by the savvy and brilliant Joseph Pulitzer, who reshaped newspaper journalism. Hungarian-born, an intense indomitable figure, Pulitzer was the most skillful of all the newspaper publishers, a passionate crusader against dishonest government, a fierce, hawk-like competitor who did not shrink from sensationalism in circulation struggles. He was also a visionary who richly endowed his profession basically a combination of Steve Jobs and Ralph Nader with a touch of Donald Trump. In one his most successful promotions Pulitzer hatched a scheme to raise funds for building of a pedestal at the entrance to the New York harbor so that the Statue of Liberty, which was stranded in France awaiting shipment, could be mounted. He was the first to call for the training of journalists at the university level in a school of journalism. He envisioned Pulitzer Prizes for journalism, literature, music, and drama. In writing his 1904 will, he made provision for the establishment of the Pulitzer Prizes as an incentive to excellence with a financial reward. $10,000 to the winners. It was cash for the crusaders. Today the awards are administered by a board of trustees at Columbia University that receives recommendations from a jury of five members in this case. Each winner still gets $10,000 cash and on occasion, controversy. Thats because the judges dont always agree. So, whats new? In fact, in 1963 the drama jury nominated Edward Albees Whos Afraid of Virginia Woolf?, but the board found the script insufficiently uplifting, a complaint that related to arguments over sexual permissiveness and rough dialogue. No award was given that year and members of the jury resigned in protest. In 1993 the prize went to Tony Kushners Angels in America: Millennium Approaches, a play that dealt with problems of homosexuality and AIDS and whose script was replete with obscenities. The vote was contentious and though no one on the board resigned this time, were told the discussions were replete with obscenities. Want more? The 2010 award went to the rock musical, Next to Normal, a title that wasnt even among the three nominated by the five person jury. That also happened in 2007 when the committee from Columbia again ignored the jurys rec and gave the award to Rabbit Hole (of course, youve seen that one too, yes?) It got a bit ugly when the jurys chairman and LA Times critic accused the committee of geographical myopia, a vision of the American theater that starts in Times Square and ends just a short taxi ride away. Does the play or the playwright always have to be from the East Coast? But, all this doesnt really answer the question: why would there be a Pulitzer-prize-winning-money-losing season at a theatre? The answer seems simple: the audience wants entertainment, the judges want enrichment. Natalie Needs a Nightie, No Sex Please Were British, Love, Sex and the IRS and The Odd Couple arent likely to win anything but attendance and applause. The basic reason our audience puts their seat in one of ours is not ennoblement but escapism. The basic reason they applaud is because we give them laughter in bucket-fulls. The Pulitzer jury and the committees vision extends beyond guffaws. As a dentist once said to us before a production of The Crucible I want to leave my pain at work. In America Neil Simon knows that credo well. After all, hes never won a Pulitzer. Hes just had a theatre named after him Here at Theatre Winter Haven we will continue to offer the best of both worlds with the Mainstage and StageRead Series.

of Fine Arts at All Saints Academy and Programming Director at Polk Theatre), as well as worked with him at what was then the Pied Piper Players. Paul says. I dont know if people really know what a technical director does, so I will tell you: they make the magic work. And that is what Brian does best! He is a great colleague and office mate, a true collaborator, and both he and his wife have been my good friends. However, what I like about Brian most is he is a true cat lover. While Brian was at Harrison, he was also Technical Director for the Imperial Symphony Orchestra, lending his talents there to make the concerts stand out. While working with the symphony, he also became part time Technical Director at the Polk Theatre. In 2005, he became the Theatres full time TD. This is when I became familiar with Brians work, and learned he had so much more to offer our venue than just his vast knowledge of Theatre. Brian and I created underground @ The Polk together, because we felt showcasing local bands, giving them the opportunity to play in a professional setting, was very important. We spent hours investigating every nook and cranny of the Polk, and one day were even fortunate enough to stumble upon the beautiful, hand drawn original plans for the Polk Theatre, long believed lost. Brian coined the phrase for the Polk that we continue to use to this day, Polk Theatre: Where historic meets cutting edge! It just fit so perfectly! Brian and I worked together for three and a half years, during which time he taught me a great deal about Theatre, and for that I will always be truly grateful. He then moved on to become Southeastern Universitys Technical Director, once again, teaching students about technical Theatre. There is no doubt after meeting some of his students, they already regard him as a mentor, and most likely will, throughout their careers. During all the time Brian has lived in Lakeland, he has been a great advocate for, and committed to, the arts in our community. He has worked as technical director, lighting designer, set designer, sound engineer, master electrician when needed, for Lakeland Community Theatre, Theatre Winter Haven, Florida Dance Theatre and on and on. Another person he has worked with on many theatre events is Norm Small, Producing Director at Theatre Winter Haven. Norm says, There are some people who come with both abilities and attitudes. Hire the guy with the former and not the later. We did. His name was Brian Macke. Brian and his wife Christy, will be leaving our community soon, to return to their home state of Missouri, where they both grew up and attended college. Brian received his degree in Technical Theatre from the University of Missouri/Columbia. The greater St. Louis area will no doubt offer a number of great opportunities for him to use his many talents and make the kind of impact there that he has had on all of us. The news of his departure has hit many of his friends and colleagues hard, because he has become such an integral part of the performing arts and Polk County communities. Everyone who has worked with Brian has done nothing but praise the experience. Such is the case with Brians close friend and colleague, Alan Reynolds, Artistic Managing Director at Lakeland Community Theatre. Reynolds, who has worked with him at

Farewell Theatre Magic Maker & Friend!

By Leslie A. Sikora, President/CEO, The historic Polk Theatre
A comprehensive conceptual and experiential understanding of exactly what theatres magic is, how and why it happens, and what an actor has to do, and, just as importantly not do, for the magic to happen every time they step onto a stage. ~Michael Jordan Evans, Owner Burlington Theatre Lab Each time a patron enters a theatre to see a play, concert or show, they know they are going to experience more than just the actors, singers or dancers. They feel something and see something special, but arent really aware of how it is happening. Whatever it is, they know it made the experience magical. In Theatre, the euphemism, pay no attention to that man behind the curtain, might be referring to the technical crew working backstage on a show. Typically, they dress in all black in order to stay out of view of the audience. Right away I liked this about them!!! In the Theatre world, reference to the man (or woman) behind the curtain could also be where the magic of the Theatre begins. When a patron comes to a show, they know what they bought tickets to see, but what they may not know is how lighting, sound and stage design enhances their experience. They spend little time pondering lighting designers, set designers, sound engineers, stage managers, and on and on. These are the people who make special things happen that enhances their experience. There is one such person who has been making magic happen in theatres throughout our community for many years. Brian Macke, currently Technical Director at Southeastern University, is responsible for making some of your favorite shows look fabulous. Brian began his career in Lakeland as Technical Director at Harrison School of the arts. He taught students in technical theatre there for six years and many of those students still consider him their mentor these seven years later. He also shared an office at Harrison with Paul Hughes (currently Director

Lakeland Community Theatre since 1999, Southeastern University and Theatre Winter Haven says, For nearly 15 years Brian has been a colleague and professional associate; from the numerous projects we have collaborated on at many different venues such as The Polk, Harrison School for the Arts, Theatre Winter Haven, Southeastern University, ISO and Lakeland Community Theatre he has been a consummate professional, but most importantly a dear friend. The area Arts community is losing a great advocate and asset, he will truly be missed. And so, I would like to take this opportunity to speak for all those people who have had the wonderful opportunity to work with Brian, only once or many times, for the result bears no difference in emotion. Whether stage manager, house manager, director, actor, techie, roadie, usher or ticket taker, all have consistently expressed respect for his ability and the manner in which he works. So, collectively, we say . Thank you for sharing your knowledge, your time and your talent with our community. May those who also have the great opportunity to work with you in the future, enjoy getting to know you, and have as much fun, as we have. Hopefully, you will think of us from time to time, remembering all the great experiences you had with us and will make it this way again for a visit. We all loved working with you, getting to know you, and will miss you greatly. Wishing you the best in all your future endeavors . Keep making the magic happen!

he Imperial Symphony Orchestras 2012-2013 season kicks off Aug. 28th, 2012, with Music and Martinis. This hugely popular event has local bars and restaurants competing for the title of Best Martini, while music lovers mingle and enjoy live music. Once drinks are finished, though, its tray tables up, seat belts fastened, and time for a symphonic world tour! The seasons musical travels begin on October 2 in Russia with music by Rachmaninoff, Rimsky-Korsakov, Tchaikovsky and others. Cellist and guest soloist Scott Klucksdahl is quite a jet-setter himself: he has performed as an orchestral soloist, recitalist, and chamber musician in major metropolitan centers throughout the United States, Europe, Israel, and Latin America, including The San Francisco Symphony, the Asheville, Marin, Omaha, and Tampa Bay orchestras, Bulgarias Sofia Philharmonic Orchestra, and Colombias Orquesta Filarmonica de Bogota. October 2012 A Time to Celebrate the Arts

Every day the Polk Arts Alliance and Polks cultural arts organizations celebrate the arts, but October is a month to commemorate the arts in a big way. It is National Arts and Humanities Month the largest annual celebration for the arts and humanities in the nation! And, there are many opportunities to participate in Polk County The Heart of the Arts. National Arts and Humanities Month (NAHM) is a coast-to-coast collective recognition of the importance of culture in America. It is designed to encourage all Americans to explore new facets of the arts and humanities in their lives, and to begin a lifelong habit of active participation in the arts and humanities. What can I do to celebrate National Arts and Humanities Month? Attend local arts events like museum exhibits, local plays or concerts. If you have kids, make it a family outing! Take a class in creative writing, dance, painting or whatever strikes your fancy. Perform publically and/or donate your artwork, literature and/ or creative skills to a community center or cultural organization. Enjoy the arts with your family and friends. Sing, play music, read a book, dance or draw together. Be an advocate. Write to your Member of Congress, letting him/her how important arts and arts education funding is to you, your family and your community. The arts and humanities play an important role in our lives they provide enrichment and strive to provide enlightening and transformational experiences to the broadest possible cross section of the American public. The arts allow us to explore ideas, express emotions, and better appreciate cultures from around the world. NAHM is an opportunity to recognize and celebrate the positive impact the arts bring to our schools and communities.

Her Majesty tHe Queens royal swan Marker CoMing to lakeland

To honor the connection between Queen Elizabeth IIs ongoing Diamond Jubilee and Lakelands past, the Gala Coordination Group for the Regal Swan Foundation, Inc., will host Her Royal Majestys Swan Marker, David Barber, Sept. 8 for a gala to honor the Queen. Lakeland is the only American city that Barber will visit. While the first swans began appearing in our lakes in the 1920s, they were completely eradicated by 1954 due to alligators. In 1957, lifelong Lakeland resident Mrs. Robert Pickardt wrote to Queen Elizabeth expressing her grief for the swans deaths. The royal family allowed for the capture of two royal white mute swans to be sent to Lakeland and the descendants of the pair continue to grace our many lakes today. In his role as Swan Marker, Barber is responsible for protecting all swans under proprietary rights to the Queen along the River Thames. During special events such as the upcoming Olympics, Barber arranges for the safe removal of the Thames swans until the events conclude. Barber will come to Lakeland to discuss his royal role, share photos of the Diamond Jubilee project and raise money for the Regal Swan Foundation, a U.S.-based group that helps Lakeland with its own swans. It is truly a once in a lifetime opportunity for a city in the U.S to be a part of the Queens Diamond Jubilee Celebration, and how fitting it is that Mr. Barber chose Lakeland, said Julie Townsend, the Lakeland-based chairperson of the Regal Swan Foundation, Inc. The swans on Lake Morton are so important to the identity of our city, and we celebrate not only his visit, but 55 years of the Queens swans on the lake. The gala, is a ticketed event that be held at the Junior League of Greater Lakelands Sorosis Building around Lake Morton. Activities, food, games and more will be held prior to the gala on the shores of Lake Morton.
Image above: Mary May Witte, White Swan at Lake Morton, 2011, acrylic on canvas, will be on display from September 4-24 in the Winter Haven Fine Arts Gallery at Polk State College.

Feb 15-24: Cliffhanger by James Yaffe. Mingling

suspense and humor, this ingeniously plotted thriller follows all the unexpected twists and turns. It combines the warmth and charm of On Golden Pond with almost as many plot twists as Deathtrap.

April 12-21: Nobodys Perfect by Simon Williams. When Leonard Loftus wishes to submit his novel to a feminist publishing house, he is forced to do so under a female pseudonym. When he wins first prize, Leonard begins to have a major problem. What follows is a hilarious dilemma of cross-dressing and cross-purposes, not unlike those found in movies such as Some Like It Hot, Tootsie and Mrs. Doubtfire. Acclaimed as a classic feel good romantic comedy, this play is sure to offer belly laughs galore.
Haines City Community Theatre is located in the Clay Cut Center at 801 Ledwith Avenue in Haines City. For further information call the theatre at (863) 421-1893 or visit the website at www.hainescitytheatre.com.

Transitions
The Lake Wales Arts Council is in transition as years of files, art works, books, paint brushes, sheet music, plates, punch bowls, cocktail napkins, paperclips and millions of other things are being sorted and packed or shared as appropriate prior to our temporary relocation. Beginning June 8, Polk State College formally took over the Arts Center building to begin the extensive and needed repairs. The historic windows will be repaired, the roof leaks sealed, the office leaks and mold remedied, a bathroom provided at the rear of Updike Hall and so many other things that are needed to make it a first class facility and to meet current building codes. During the approximately six months of disruption, the Arts Council office will be located in the Youth Building at the Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd at 228 S. 4th Street, Lake Wales. The Church has graciously offered us space, not only for our office, but also as a venue for our summer Arts Camp which proceeded as traditionally. We are most grateful to them for their hospitality and kindness. We expect construction to progress smoothly and hope to move back into offices in the Arts Center in January 2013.

Planning is underway for the 42nd Annual Lake Wales Art Show that will take place on March 23 & 24, 2013. The two-day show celebrates a tradition of exhibiting quality fine art. Childrens activities, music and food provide a vibrant atmosphere around the exceptional works on view. The show attracts more than 25,000 visitors each year to the beautiful shores of Lake Wailes. At the end of August, the artist application will be mailed and posted on the Arts Council website (www. lakewalesartscouncil.org). Applications will also be available at the Arts Council office, 228 S. 4th St. across from the Church of The Good Shepherd, or by calling (863) 676-8426. Entry deadline will be January 7, 2013. A community kick-off celebration, ART-B-Q with food and music is planned for Friday evening March 22nd.

Music Professor Passes on his Keys to Success

They say those who cant do, teach. Obviously, they never met Chris Sharp. Sharp, a professor in Polk States Music Department, brings to the College a wealth of professional experience, including previous employment at Walt Disney World and a career that has included dozens of published compositions. Having made a career out of music, he now aims to equip his students with the practical skills that will allow them to do the same. Its our obligation to teach our students what they need to support themselves, Sharp said. Sharp holds a bachelors and doctorate in music from the University of Florida, and a masters from the University of Miami. Immediately after earning his masters degree, Sharp was hired as a trombone player at Walt Disney World. Thats when my parents said, hes going to make it, Sharp said. Sharp worked at Disney for the next 11 years, a stint that also allowed him to work as an arranger and orchestrator. After leaving Disney, he worked as a high school band director in Orange County, a job that let him teach while also writing and arranging for the scholastic level. My students were my guinea pigs. I was able to write for their concerts and then make changes when I saw what wasnt going to work, Sharp said. Pretty soon, I started submitting material to publishers. The jobs rolled in and he left teaching when he signed to work for a publisher as a composer and arranger. 30

Polk State Director of Bands Chris Sharp, left, has published hundreds of compositions.

Imagine a time before texting, iphones or ipads

or .com anything. A time when people looked forward to joining family around the dinner table or going out for a show or silent movie at The Ritz Theatre. In 1925, the doors opened to a venue that provided the setting for films, vaudeville, silent movies, live performances, and various civic events. For more than 50 years the Ritz Theatre provided entertainment and a sense of community for the citizens of Polk County and the surrounding area. In the late 90s the Ritz went dark and remained closed for more than 20 years. In 2011, The Ritz Theatre 100 Inc. Board of Directors vision became a reality, under the direction of President Kathy Buldini, the doors opened once again. Today, its walls are reverberating with the joyful sounds of music, laughter, cheers, tears, and shouts of joy from people of all ages. The historical Ritz Theatre is preparing to add the final layer to the restoration project. Shes all ready but the lipstick, quoted Norman Small, Producing Director, Theatre Winter Haven. Through partnership of The Ritz Theatre, Mainstreet Winter Haven, and the Winter Haven Chamber we present to you Wine for The Sign A fundraising campaign on August 30 from 6-8pm at The Ritz located at 263 West Central Avenue in downtown Winter Haven. Tickets are limited to the first 300 individuals and can be obtained for as low as $75 per ticket. One-hundred percent of the proceeds will apply to the construction and installation of the historical sign and front facade. If you would like to become a Ritz Supporter, attend a event scheduled at the Ritz, book the facility, or get additional information please contact Stella Heath at (863) 295-9900 or visit www.ritzoncentral.com.

Southeastern University:

Performing Arts & Communication Programs Soaring to New Heights!

Southeastern Universitys Performing Arts & Communication programs are setting the bar high! Over the last decade, the University has been rapidly developing some of the best programs available in Theatre, Music, Film & Cinematography, Broadcasting, Public Relations, and Journalism. The Theatre program features a variety of opportunities for students including main stage productions such as the 2011/2012 performances of Three Sisters and Godspell, comedy in the form of our Unpland Improv team, and Christ-centered sketches through the drama and comedy of Soul Food. Southeastern is excited to be partnering with the Lakeland Community Theatre for the upcoming 2012/2013 season; a partnership which will see students assisting with not only Southeastern University sponsored productions, but also those of the Lakeland Community Theatre. Other opportunities for student involvement include the Southeastern University chapter of the national theatre honor society, Alpha Psi Omega. The organizations student-led events include the Alpha Psi Omega Festival which is held in the fall of each year. The Music Departments contemporary bands, Pablo and Sumner, named after each bands drummer, made a huge impact on the local community with their performance at a Battle of the Bands during the spring of 2012! Original music written by the students, combined with an outstanding performance, left the audience wondering when they will be seeing the students breaking into the national music scene! The program continues to exceed all expectations thanks to the incredible student talent. You dont want to miss the Contemporary Bands performances during the 2012/2013 academic year! Additional items of note for the Music Department during the 2011/2012 season included a stunning performance at Carnegie Hall by Assistant Professor of Music, Young-Ah Tak, the ever popular Night on Broadway montage of musical hits, A Night at the Opera Scenes, Choral Concert Performance, Jazz Band Concert, Kozmik String Quartet, and the Charles Hulin Piano Concert. In a continuing effort by Southeastern University to be a servant of

the local art community, the Music Department also put on a two day jazz workshop at Trinity Presbyterian Church during the spring, which culminated with a concert featuring local high school jazz bands, the Southeastern University Jazz Band, and a powerful performance by accomplished musician Michael Philip Mossman. Lakelands place on the map is also being highlighted more and more through the efforts of the Southeastern University Film program! The efforts of our students and faculty have produced more than 38 short films and a full-length feature film for the 2011/2012 academic year! An intense, hands-on environment has been producing students who rival those from top notch film schools, and the program is only becoming more advanced with time. Southeastern is proud to be the host and sponsor of the 180 Film Festival which saw 42 film submissions this year and has been expanded to accept high school submissions as well. The upcoming academic year will bring new scholarship funds for film students, equipment upgrades which put Southeastern at the level of its counterparts in Los Angeles, funding for student film submissions to national festivals, increased development of the 180 Film Festival, and the addition of a new student film organization on campus! We are striving to become the center of Film Studies for the East Coast, said Dr. Wade Mumm, the Chair of the Communication Department. Southeastern Universitys Broadcast program is accelerating with no signs of slowing down as we enter the 12th season of the nationally broadcast program, RAW TV, our second season of 96 News which airs on PGTV, and a brand new host for Unpland Improv. SEUs state of the art studio facility offers students a unique learning experience, and the programs industry seasoned staff have connected students with internship opportunities including Country Music Television in Nashville, Fox News 7 Entertainment Division in Miami, WFTV Channel 9 in Orlando, and FOX 13 in Tampa. Current alumni hold positions at WJCB-TV Channel 20 ABC in Gainesville, CBN in Virginia Beach, FOX Sports in Atlanta, The Weather Channel in Atlanta, and DayStar TV in Dallas. The Journalism and Public Relations program at Southeastern University is also a force to be reckoned with, having trained and sent out alumni who are taking the market by storm. Currently, alumni are serving in positions which include Corporate Communications Specialist, Social Media Coordinator, Sports Photographer with the NFL, Editorial Assistant with Relevant Media Group, Crime Reporter with The Daily Herald in Columbia, TN, Crime Reporter with the Daytona Beach News Journal, Production Assistant at Oxford University Press, and Communications Specialist for the Minnesota House of Representatives.

The lineup included Jason Matthew Smith, known for his performances in Star Trek, NCIS: Los Angeles, Sons of Anarchy, and CSI Miami; Korey Pollard, known for his directing skill in such titles as Rizzoli & Isles, Lie to Me, Life, and Monk; Mark Atteberry, who has performed in such titles as 24, Nip/Tuck, Dexter, Criminal Minds, and The Mentalist; and finally John Bucher who has been on both sides of the camera in numerous productions, and currently serves as a faculty member for LAFSC in Los Angeles, CA where our students study before completion of their degree from Southeastern.
