The British Standard Specification for Toolmakers’ Straight-
edges (No. 852—1939) has been endorsed as an Australian
Standard with amendments to meet Australian conditions.
To avoid reprinting B.S. No. 852 as an Australian Standard, the
attached endorsement and amendment slips have been issued.
The endorsement slip should be attached to the cover of B.S.
No. 852 for use in Australia, and the amendments inserted at the
appropriate pages.

NOTE. When using a glass test plate, care should be taken as far as possible to
avoid handling it, as the resultant local temperature effects may introduce errors
in the flatness of the working face.

Clause 5. Accuracy. Insert the reference ‘B.S. 869’ after ‘flats’ in the

of the Mechanical Industry Committee in response to a request
received from the Institution of Production Engineers. It forms
one of a series of Specifications in course of preparation for

engineers’ precision tools,* and has been prepared with the

co-operation of the manufacturers and in close collaboration with
the National Physical Laboratory.

This Specification requires reference to the following British

FOR

TOOLMAKERS’ STRAIGHTEDGES.

Scope.

1. This Specification applies to toolmakers’ straightedges of 10

short length, intended for very accurate work, and having one
working edge, which is bevelled and very slightly rounded off
(commonly described as a “knife-edge”).

NOTE . — The attention of the Purchaser is drawn to the necessity for

indicating, in his enquiry and order, his particular requirements in regard 15
to type and length, and whether a test plate (see Clause 6) is required.

Material.

2. The straightedges shall be made from high quality cast or

alloy steel.

The straightedges shall be hardened and they shall be suitably 20

heat treated to remove any stresses resulting from the hardening
process and to give stability. The diamond pyramid hardness
number of the hardened straightedges, measured adjacent to the
working edge, shall be not less than 800.*

3. Typical sections of straightedges of the type covered by

this Specification are given in Figs. I to 4 inclusive.

* NOTE. — The approximate equivalent hardness number on the

Rockwell C scale is 62.
