COURSE DESCRIPTION: Strategic Information Systems is concerned with the strategic role of information systems and technologies in an organisation. It explores how technology and information can be best used to achieve the organisation's goals and in doing so gain strategic and competitive advantage within its business sector. COURSE OBJECTIVE:This course aims to provide students, a thorough knowledge of how businesses strategically deploy information systems and technologies to competitive advantage and new business opportunity. This course is about the strategic deployment and management of information technology (IT) within todays complex organizations. The course establishes a basis for a strategic look at business and the technology-related decisions being made, examines technology use in the value chain or supply chain of a business, examines electronic commerce from several viewpoints, and examines the technology, data communications and architectures in use in todays business. Classes are structured to address key topics in systems management, including techniques, issues and contemporary and best practice. LEARNING OUTCOMES:By the end of this course students should be able to: 1. The concepts of strategy, information systems and information technology. 2. The role of future trends in technology and their impact in defining/redefining strategies in an organization to attain and maintain competitive advantage. 3. Analysis techniques that support IS/IT alignment with the business strategy. 4. How IS/IT strategic plans should and can be aligned with business strategy. 5. The processes and key issues involved in the evaluation, planning and implementation of strategic information systems across an organisations various functions. 6. Identify several competitive strategies and how IT can help for business.

7. Understand how and where IT can be applied to basic business processes using porters value chain concept. 8. Identify essential processes of e-commerce systems and strategic value of e-commerce system in business. 9. Describe how OLTP meets strategic information needs of manager. 10. Define decision support systems and identify their use in gaining competitive advantages. 11. Discuss the role of planning and business models in the development of business Strategies. 12. Understand the concept of Critical Success Factors and their use to redesign IS. 13. Enhancing management decision making and strategic decision taking use of DSS/GDSS/ESS/ Different electronic tools. 14. Managing international information system. 15. Understand how intergraded information system can supports the organizations: Like the following aspects of CRM,ERP and SCM systems. a. Business Process Supported b. Customer and Business value provided c. Potential challenges and trends. COURSE CONTENT :Enterprise Business system & Cross Functional enterprise application: Introduction to Enterprise Business System CRM/ERP/SCM. Executive information Portals, Knowledge Management Systems, Critical Success factors and their use to determine Organization information requirements; introduction to e-commerce, Ecommerce application issues. Decision support systems in business. Understanding Online analytical processing, what if analysis, sensitivity analysis, Goal Seek Analysis and optimization analysis for enabling managers to take better decisions. Re-engineering business processes, Redesigning information systems to becoming an agile company, concept of virtual company, building a knowledge Creating Company.

Pedagogy The delivery of this course will be primarily lecture based, supplemented with discussion, work-based learning, readings, project work and presentations, to appreciate the application of the theory behind strategic information systems in real world organizations. Requirements: Students are expected to carefully read all the readings assigned for each class and to actively participate in class discussions. In addition they are required to go through daily newspapers and different books and sources to keep update of the recent information and can be contributed in class participation.
