PREFACE

This Standard was prepared by the Standards Australia/Standards New Zealand Joint
Committee CH/4 on Brake Fluids for Motor Vehicles.
It specifies the requirements for automotive brake fluids of silicone type for use in
hydraulic braking systems of motor vehicles. In this Standard, the performance
requirements of Grade 4 (equivalent to DOT 5) are specified, along with methods of test.
Grades 1, 2 and 3 brake fluid have been deleted, as these are to be found in AS 1960.1
Motor vehicle brake fluids, Part 1: Non-petroleum type.
The term ‘informative’ has been used in this Standard to define the application of the
appendix to which it applies. An ‘informative’ appendix is only for information and
guidance.

Motor vehicle brake fluids

Part 2: Silicone type

1 SCOPE This Standard specifies requirements for the characteristics, testing and
packing of automotive brake fluid of the silicone type, for use in the hydraulic braking
systems and clutches of motor vehicles.
NOTE: Appendix A provides general guidance in the care and handling of brake fluids.
This is a free 5 page sample. Access the full version at http://infostore.saiglobal.com.

2 APPLICATION The application of this Standard in the selection and use of these
fluids shall be made in conjunction with the recommendations of the manufacturer of the
motor vehicle in which the fluid is to be used.

3 REFERENCED DOCUMENTS The following documents are referred to in this

Standard:
FMVSS116 Motor Vehicle Brake Fluids
SAE J1703 Motor Vehicle Brake Fluid

4 DEFINITIONS For the purpose of this Standard, the definitions below apply.
4.1 Blister—a cavity or sac on the surface of a brake cup.
4.2 Chipping—a condition in which small pieces are missing from the outer surface of a
brake cup.
4.3 Scuffing—an erosion of a portion of the outer surface of a brake cup visible to the
naked eye.
4.4 Sloughing—the presence of carbon black loosely held on the surface of the brake
cup. When such a cup is placed beneath a 500 g weight and drawn across a sheet of bond
paper on a firm surface, a black line is produced.
4.5 Stickiness—a condition on the surface of a brake cup such that fibres will be pulled
from a wad of USP-Grade or BP-Grade absorbent cotton wool when it is drawn across the
surface of the cup.

5 CLASSIFICATION The fluid shall be supplied as Grade 4, with an equilibrium

reflux boiling point (ERBP), wet ERBP and kinematic viscosity in accordance with
Table 1.

6 BRAKE FLUID CHARACTERISTICS The physical and chemical properties of the

fluid shall be such to enable the fluid, when tested as prescribed in Clause 7, to comply
with Table 1.

7 METHODS OF TEST The fluid shall be tested for compliance with this Standard
by the test methods specified in Table 1.
NOTE: The SAE RM66 required to perform these tests is available from the Society of
Automotive Engineers Inc., 400 Commonwealth Drive, Warrendale, Pa 15096, USA.
