Local community business leader, Andrew Coolidge, has officially declared his candidacy for Chico City Council. Coolidge has lived in Chico for twenty years and owns Coolidge Public Relations, which works to promote community and business events locally. We need strong leadership in Chico, said Coolidge, our priority in this economy must be jobs and economic growth, but long term we need to continue this pursuit to ensure our children live in a community that continues to provide small town charm, but has economic opportunities which will provide a good life for them. Coolidge cites his young daughter and son as his inspiration for joining the race. His business currently works for the Silver Dollar Fair to raise donations and promote the event, it also produces the Chico and Paradise Home and Garden Shows also works with Soroptimists International on the Chico Home, Garden and Leisure Show held this last March. In the past the business helped produce other events such as the Oroville Salmon Festival and the Mommy and Baby Fair with Enloe Medical Center. The business routinely donates to a variety of community groups from animal rescue programs to youth based non-profits. It also stages one of the largest Art Competitions in Chico, the Recycled Art Competition. The competition, which Coolidge founded to promote both art and protecting the environment, is held each fall in conjunction with the Home and Garden Show. Among his priorities in office Coolidge plans to work first and foremost towards rebuilding the local economy. It is about jobs, said Coolidge, currently that should be the focus of every elected official; to make sure we help businesses in any possible way to create and bring jobs to Chico. I am working to promote Chico and Butte County businesses every day, said Coolidge, there are many people in Chico working to bring work and promote local small businesses who are struggling to stay afloat, unfortunately our City Council is not. It is time people who know how to create jobs and promote our business community are elected to office, said Coolidge. Beyond a strong economic
platform Coolidge believes that protecting Bidwell Park; making improvements to the Citys streets, sidewalks and drainage problems; improving bicycle safety; and having common sense leadership are the most important goals while he is in office. Too often the issues in Chico are so hotly debated by the left and the right, said Coolidge, the common-sense answer is ignored. Take parking in downtown Chico for instance, many spaces at the end of blocks or in front of former driveways that are now permanently blocked could be utilized with very minimal cost, unfortunately these easy approaches are ignored in the heated exchange of ideas, said Coolidge. The city has spent thousands of dollars for surveys and improvements, said Coolidge, while ignoring the fact our local streets dont have basic drainage. In many areas of town children and bicyclists must walk or ride near the middle of the road just to stay out of the mud because we lack proper sidewalks and bike lanes in many areas, said Coolidge, our city is actually ranked the eighth worst in the state for bicycle safety, we need to improve this now. I love Chico, and I believe it is a great place to raise a family, said Coolidge, but we must make the city government more efficient and restore its infrastructure to truly compete for new jobs. We have ignored and neglected our infrastructure for too long, said Coolidge, the focus has been on creating projects to beautify our city. While that is important, it should be second to providing quality roads, sidewalks and drainage to our neighborhoods, said Coolidge. Coolidge is a graduate of California State University, Chico with a Bachelors Degree in English. He has lived in Chico for the last twenty years and was raised in the small community of Loma Rica, in the foothills of Yuba County. His business, Coolidge Public Relations has primarily produced events, mainly Home and Garden Shows, for the last several years.

An incredible display of period hand fans are currently being showcased at the historic C.F. Lott Home in Oroville. The origin of hand fans can be traced as far back as 4,000 years ago in Egypt. Hand fans were once seen as a sacred instrument used in religious ceremonies and were also symbols of power. There is even an entire culture of hand fans, such as, if a woman was fanning herself with her left hand, it meant, Dont flirt with that woman or fanning slowly meant I am married. A fan placed near the heart meant You have won my love. As the years went by and the roles of women changed after World War I the hand held fans began to diminish. However, during the 1920s they took on a new life and began to be used for ad-
vertising. The display at the Lott Home contains fans of all eras and purposes. Stop by and visit the display and let your imagination wonder, or simply ask one of the costumed docents at the Lott Home about the fan collection. Visit the Lott Home which is located in Sank Park at 1067 Montgomery Street, Oroville, on Fridays, Sundays, and Mondays from 11:30 A.M. to 3:30 P.M. and also be treated to a captivating history of the Victorian home, circa 1856, presented by costumed museum docents. Period displays change several times a year so youll want to see the hand fans before they are whisked away after Labor Day. The City of Oroville is also offering Museum Passports that are good for one year, allow the holder and up to three guests to visit not only the C.F. Lott Home but Bolts Antique Tool Museum, the Chinese Temple & Museum Complex, the Pioneer History Museum and the Feather River Nature Center. Questions regarding the display, the C.F. Lott Home, and the Museum Passport program may be directed to the City of Oroville at (530) 538-2415 or by visiting the Citys website: www.cityoforoville.org

While these tough economic times are difficult for everyone, they are particularly challenging for young people. According to a Harris Survey, one in five children lives in poverty, three out of ten wont graduate from high school on time and 15.1 million kids are left unsupervised during the hours of the day when teen crime escalatesfrom 3:00 to 7:00 p.m. But in Oroville there is a place where young people are given hope and opportunitythe Boys and Girls Club, simply called The Club by those who run the center and those who participate in its many programs. Located in the Southside Community Center on Lower Wyandotte Road, The Club is open during the summer from noon to 5:00 p.m. and during the school year from 2:45 to 7:00 p.m. Their mission is simple: To inspire and enable all young people to reach their full potential as productive, caring, responsible citizens. To that end the center has well-rounded strategies to achieve the goal of creating engaged and productive citizens of the future. The core programs encompass Education and Career Development, Health and Life Skills, the Arts, Sports, Fitness and Recreation, and Character and Leadership Development. For example, in the Arts area, the Picassos Palace program introduces members to a particular artist and his or her artistic style, and then members have the chance to create their own art mimicking the same style. The Leadership in Training (LIT) program requires that participants complete an application and interview process. Those selected assist with programs at the center, much like a teachers helper, and represent The Club at public events. Smart Moves is a program that allows members to talk with staff about personal issues that are of concern, such as bullying, puberty, drugs and alcohol, gender issues, and relationships. Along with the full range of programs, the center also provides meals every day of the week. During the summer hours, the staff provide both lunch and a snack and during the school year, a snack and dinner. These are full meals that are nutritionally complete including a fruit, a vegetable, a grain, a protein and a dairy serving. Suggestions from members guide staff in selecting which components to offer. One staff person does the shopping, another the cooking and
are in the foods they eat. In the kitchen under staff supervision, they learn these skills along with cleanliness, proper temperature for food to avoid contamination and cleaning up after themselves. In addition to the teen center at the Southside Community Center, there is a Teen Center located in the Butte County Juvenile Hall. As a reward for good behavior, youth inmates are given access to the program, which includes educational development and Aggression Replacement Training (ART). This program works toward lowering recidivism by teaching moral reasoning, skill streaming and inner control. Minors are guided to making better choices through role-playing exercises and assessing the consequences of their behavior. Staff members also serve as case managers for released youths by assisting with issues that arise at home and school and can provide transportation to appointments. Lack of transportation is probably one of the biggest factors facing teens that might otherwise participate in The Club. During the summer, the teen center provides transportation from locations at Central and Ishi high schools and during the school year additional locations at L.P. and Oroville high schools in a 12-person van. However, most of the members live within walking distance of The Club. During the summer, an average of 30 young people use the center, and during the school year anywhere from 45 to 70 students can be found participating in programs. With budget cuts falling particularly hard on public schools, the center has created standardized lessons to assist students in making up the 60 hours of instruction required for each failing grade during the school semester. Thus the center functions as a regular summer school session. The program, called Recovery Hours, guarantees 2 hours of instruction per day every day of the
week toward the required hours. But its not all hard work and homework. Every Friday there are Water Wars with water balloons and lots of wet kids. At the weekly video game tournaments, members can win $10 gift cards from businesses in town like The Game Stop. On Movie Nights the latest releases are shown. Outside programs, like Cast Hope, teach kids to fly fish and provide free equipment. This year, said Spiegler, a number of fundraisers are planned to raise money to take kids to SunSplash. Although The Club is largely grant-based, donations and fundraisers also assist with the running of the center. The hugely successful and popular annual fundraiser is the Valentine Days Gala held at the Elks Lodge in Chico. This takes year-around planning and is handled primarily by Jon Rango, the Unit Director of the Oroville Teen Center and Juvenile Hall Site. Funds from the gala support not only the teen center in Oroville, but also a clubhouse and teen center in Chico and a teen center and 6th grade program in Paradise. Teen centers cater to young people aged 12 to 18, while clubhouses are for younger members up to age 10. The 6th grade program, for ages 10 through 12, fills the gap between the teen centers and the clubhouses. According to Spiegler, The Club encourages alumni members to continue their participation after graduation by working at the center as volunteers providing valuable mentoring to members based on their own experiences. The staff at the Oroville center has done just that. Iris Romero came to the teen center as a participant in Club Service, a program that provides money for college through volunteer hours. Eventually she was hired. Yahya Dosu grew up in Virginia where he first became involved in the Boys and Girls Club, which served as an antidote to the difficulties experienced by many of his peers. When he moved to Oroville, he began volunteering at the center. Spiegler said that he was at the center every day from opening to closing for nearly six months when he too was hired as staff. Volunteers from the community also assist with program implementation under the direct supervision of staff. They undergo the same rigorous process as staff does when considered for employment. And they are provided with training. With the new school year approaching, volunteers are needed for tutoring in reading, math, science and history. Depending on need and available staff, the center accepts volunteers throughout the year. Despite the grim statistics that fill the airwavesteen suicide rates, poverty, teen pregnancy, drugs and alcohol abusethere are dedicated, committed young people who serve daily at clubhouses and teen centers throughout the United States. Their passion is to provide sterling role models to the youths they serve, to educate, mentor, encourage and guide a new generation toward a life of service and engaged citizenship. The Club in Oroville is just such an example of both the success and the enduring legacy of the Boys and Girls Club of America.
