The History of Orthodontics

Wanting straight teeth is not simply an a iction of modern man- even in ancient times people sought help to x crooked teeth. Ancient Egyptians have been found mummi ed with early versions of orthodontic bands around their teeth. Both Aristotle and Hippocrates discussed dental conditions and ways to straighten teeth. So what did it take for ancient interventions to become todays eld of orthodontics? In the 1700s French dentist Pierre Fauchard wrote a famous dental book with an entire chapter focused on straightening teeth. He also designed the Bandeau appliance, presumably the rst orthodontic device. Despite the use of these appliances, the term orthodontics was not used until the mid-1800s by Joachim Lafoulon. Despite these advances, however, the true advance of orthodontics into its current form did not occur until the early 1900s. During this era, Edward H. Angle proposed a classi cation system that is still in use today for determining types of malocclusions, or bad bites. Angle also formed the American Society of Orthodontia, which is now the governing board of orthodontics, the American Assoication of Orthodontics (AAO). It also wasnt until the 1900s that orthodontists began using metals gold, platinum and silver in old fashioned orthodontic brackets. Stainless steel was available in the 1930s but it wasnt until the 1950s that its use was considered acceptable in orthodontics. Up until the 1970s, orthodontic brackets wrapped all the way around teeth. This is because the adhesive that kept these brackets in place wasnt strong enough to keep the current bracket design in place until then. From the 1970s until now, orthodontics has come a long way. Advances such as selfligating brackets and heat-activated nickeltitanium wires are already being used in our o ce. In addition, clear aligners, such as what is used in Invisalign technology were developed in the last 50 years. Todays technology provides a braces experience that has never been better. With smaller, sleeker, and more-polished braces than weve ever had, the amount of discomfort during treatment is surprisingly minimal to non-existent. Many parents are shocked that their child can complete orthodontic treatment with little-to-no discomfort. Compared to what many of us experienced as children with braces, this is a completely di erent world! What will be the next big thing in orthodontics? Through our a liation with teaching at UMKC and Childrens Mercy Hospital, youre certain to be one of the rst to know! Dr. Burlesons prediction : advances in technology will allow customized braces for each patient through reduced cost, much like what we use for the advanced Incognito braces on the inside of your teeth by 3M (currently at $10,000 +). Advances in technology should make this option available to more patients as the cost becomes more attractive.

Patient Spotlight

In the event that a dental injury occurs, do not hesitate to contact your dentist, orthodontist or oral surgeon. Quick action is required in order to save a tooth that has been knocked out. If possible, replace the tooth into the socket. If unable to insert the tooth, place it in milk and bring it directly to your dentists o ce. Teeth that have been out of the mouth for more than 30-60 minutes have a much lower rate of long-term survival. You may have heard advice to hold the tooth in your mouth on the way to the dentist. We no longer recommend this due to the risk for swallowing or aspirating the tooth. Milk is the next-best solution. Do not place the tooth in water or in an envelope. This allows the cells on the root surface to die and the chance for long-term survival of the tooth is low. We hope this helps! You can always contact us if you have any questions!

This Months Q&A Braces

Q: How long after I get my braces o do I have to wear my retainer? Retainer wear is a very important part of treatment and cannot be ignored. Great job in recognizing that wearing your retainers is something you must do after the braces come o ! The answer is based on how long you want to guarantee that your teeth will stay straight after braces. In other words, you should wear your braces as long as you can, presumably on some level for the rest of your life. Why so long? Well, the months after braces removal are the most sensitive and teeth are likely to move during that time. Also, as we age, our teeth tend to crowd in a natural aging process.
