INTRODUCTION
This Handbook is a revision of the 1989 edition of SAA HB17 and is intended to provide engineers, metallurgists, material technologists, students and others with a broad and general knowledge of the following: (a) (b) (c) (d) Description of metals and alloys. Metal products and their common classification in terms of size and shape. Nomenclature for designating metals and alloys. Manufacturing practices, including heat treatment, forming, machining, joining, finishing and testing.

This is a free 8 page sample. Access the full version at http://infostore.saiglobal.com.

Emphasis is placed on standard terminology and nomenclature, and references to Australian Standards are included, as appropriate, together with references to Standards prepared by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), the United Kingdom, the United States of America, the Federal Republic of Germany and Japan. This revision has been prepared by Standards Australia in collaboration with the Institute of Metals and Materials Australasia Ltd. It was required to upgrade the definitions and to bring the referenced documents up-to-date. The Standards from which the extracts are taken are subject to amendment and periodical review; therefore, at some time in the future a particular extract may become out of date.
NOTE: A list of Standards from which these extracts are taken is included in Appendix A.

The views of the users of this Handbook will be welcomed by Standards Australia particularly on the scope of the subjects it covers. These views will be taken into consideration when the Handbook is next revised.

1.1 INTRODUCTION Metals are given names for a large number of reasons: historical (brass mentioned in the Bible); some physical property (stainless steel); specific application (spring steel); general end use (naval brass, admiralty gunmetal); named after the inventor (Muntz metal invented by G. F. Muntz 1932); appearance (gilding metal); method of production (capped steel); generic (steel). This Chapter lists and defines the metals which are used commercially in Australia. 1.2

STEELS

1.2.1 General Steel is an alloy of iron and carbon, generally containing not more than 1.3% carbon, although a limited number of steels, e.g. chromium tool steels, have a carbon content greater than 2%. Steels are classifies as (a) unalloyed steels; and (b) alloy steels. The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) has standardized a classification of steels into unalloyed and alloy steels, based on chemical composition, in ISO 4948/1. Table 1.1 is an extract from this Standard. From the different values given for the chemical composition of the steel, the following is taken into consideration for classifying the steel as alloy or unalloyed: (a) (b) (c) Where a minimum value or range is specified for the ladle analysis of the elements given in the table, the minimum value is taken for classification. Where the manganese content of the ladle analysis is specified as a maximum only, the maximum value is taken for classification. Where for elements other than manganese a maximum value only is specified for the ladle analysis, a value of 0.7 times this maximum is taken for classification. TABLE 1.1
