Certificate in Mental Health and Addictions

Overview To provide students with the skills and knowledge to work with clients who have mental health and addictions needs. Content Graduates of this programme are able to: Apply a range of skills that are supported by an understanding of the theories and interventions used in mental health and addiction fields of practice Provide safe, basic support in a culturally safe and appropriate manner Acquire a range of interpersonal skills to use with their clients and other health professionals Recognise safe boundaries, self-care and benefits of supervision.

Course tutor
Your tutor is Kirsten Parker-van Eck. Originally from the Netherlands, she has worked and lived in the UK, Australia and now New Zealand with her husband and three children. She has a Bachelor degree in Social Services (1995) and a Bachelor degree in Business Studies (1997) and a tertiary teaching qualification (2006). She has worked in the field of Mental Health and Addiction for the last 17 years as a social worker, therapist, supervisor and trainer. She has been working for NorthTec for the last 2 years, first as part of the Student Success Team and currently as an academic staff member for Social Services.

Course Aim
This course will develop students perceptions and understanding of mental health and mental illness. They will examine a range of disorders, diagnosis and interventions.

Course Learning Outcomes


1. Describe historical and contemporary perspectives on mental health disorders 2. Discuss the notion of abnormality in relation to dominant culture and social orthodoxy including myths and realities within the context of mental health. 3. Explain the role and use of classification systems in the mental health 4. Explain a range of mental health disorders 5. Explain a range of intervention modalities 6. Describe a range of services available to mental health

You can purchase this book from Campus Books for $40.00 or borrow from the library

To pass each module students must pass every assessment Refer guidelines for resubmissions. Students can only resubmit one assessment event per module. Your attendance is expected to practice and demonstrate skills described in the Learning Outcomes

Organise a group presentation (3-4 people) in which you describe a service or resource available to mental health clients in your area. This presentation has to be accompanied by a written report with information detailed in the marking schedule. The format of the presentation is up to the group. You can use power-point, role play, song, art, dance as long as it is engaging and informative. Library Service

The Library has many resources to help you with your studies books, videos, journals, in paper, and online; friendly Librarians, and a place to study. Laptops may be borrowed for the day. Raumanga-based students: Items are issued for 2 weeks. Books may be renewed twice, if no-one else wants them. You may have 15 items at a time. Distance students: Items are issued for 4 weeks. Books may be renewed once, if no-one else wants them. You may have 10 items at a time, and these can be posted to you. Log onto the Library Catalogue (using your Student ID number as both your username and password) conduct your search, click beside the items you want, and click on Request. The items will be posted to you along with a Freepost bag for returns. To renew books, log onto the Library catalogue to renew them yourself, or phone or email us - we do not need to see them. Journals and audio-visual material may not be renewed. Photocopying and printing costs 10 cents per A4 (30 cents for colour). You can put money on your card in the library using cash or Eftpos. Research databases and online full-text articles are accessible to you from your home via the webpage: www.northtec.ac.nz. If you are asked to log in, use your student ID number, and your NorthTec network password.
