What is EMP?

Electro Magnetic Pulse is a burst of electromagnetic radiation from an explosion or a suddenly fluctuating magnetic field.

Electro-Magnetic Pulse are caused by:

Lightning Geomagnetic storm Power line transient detonation

Functioning Principle
E-Bomb works on the basic principle of Electromagnetism. Electromagnetism implies that electric current generates magnetic fields and changing magnetic fields can induce Click to edit Master subtitle style electric current. The simpler device based on the same principle is a radio receiver, which retrieves the same signal by producing current based on magnetic field variation by its antenna

Compton effect

Compton's assertion was that photons of electromagnetic energy could knock loose electrons from atoms with low atomic numbers. The photons from the blast's intense gamma radiation knocked a large number of electrons free from oxygen and nitrogen atoms in the atmosphere. This flood of electrons interacted with the Earth's magnetic field to create a fluctuating electric current, which induced 8/9/12

History behind the Technology

Though it attracted the Indian attention recently, The U.S. military has been pursuing the idea of an e-bomb for decades. This idea dates back to nuclear weapons research from the 1950s. In 1958, American tests of hydrogen bombs yielded some surprising results. A test blast over the Pacific Ocean ended up blowing out streetlights in parts of Hawaii, hundreds of miles away. 8/9/12

Construction Specifications

The bomb consists of a metal cylinder (called thearmature), which is surrounded by a coil of wire (stator winding). The armature cylinder is filled with high explosive, and a sturdyjacketsurrounds the entire device. The stator winding and the armature cylinder are separated by empty space. The bomb also has a power source, such as a bank of capacitors, which can be 8/9/12

Sequence of events when the bomb goes off:

A switch connects the capacitors to the stator, sending an electrical current through the wires. This generates an intense magnetic field. A fuze mechanism ignites the explosive material. The explosion travels as a wave through the middle of the armature cylinder. As the explosion makes its way 8/9/12 through the cylinder, the cylinder

What it does

Presents high voltage and high current to:

Antennas Transmission lines Rotor cables Power cables Microphone and other external cables Internal equipment wiring PC board traces Semiconductor junctions (diodes, transistors, ICs) Vacuum tubes

In terms of Modern warfare

An e-bomb could effectively neutralize:

vehicle control systems. Targeting systems, on the ground and on missiles and bombs. Communications systems. Navigation systems. Long and short-range sensor systems.

A non-lethal weapon

E-bomb attack would leave buildings standing and spare lives, but burning off all the important data stored in semiconductor memories in it. It wont cause any physical damage to any soldier but will disorganize the attack at the same time. It would completely fry electric and electronic equipment. It will cause a complete black out in the 8/9/12 region of attack.

E-bomb & India

Terminal Ballistics Research Laboratory (TBRL)- DRDO, Chandigarh is expecting to finish the R&D work on the project by 12th plan. TBRL director Dr Manjit Singh told in his press release that such weapon would be capable of causing huge destruction, without affecting humans. Adding to that, it can produce a pulse current of peak value 1.4 mega ampere from chemical energy released by 2.8 kg 8/9/12
