T Tideo art irrstallarions have been featured in rnuseums V ona ealleries for manv years no\g but they are rarelv
given a chance to shine in their or'vn right. The Artists Cilema, part of the Frieze Art Fair held in Regent's Park, seeks to address this imbaiance by treating {ilm and video art $'ith the respect it deserves. This year The Artists Cinema, which was first showcased at last year's event, has been expanded to include five r,r'orks specially commissioned by Frieze Projects and LLTX - a non-profit organisation that promotes the art of the moving image. These works will be shown at two daily sittings. In addition to the commissioned rvorks, there are eight programmes of films, each compiled by artists or curators, grouped around specfic themes. These wi-ll include some peformance in the ci,nema, interacting with film work.

How would you describe the programme this year? To characterise the programme in the broadest sense, each ol the curators was asked to focus on contemPorary lvork over historical work. While some chose to include historical aspects, the reason for doing so rvas reaily to articulate something about contemporary practice. So, would you describe the contemporary as a unitying theme for the project? \4Ie11, I suppose w'e r.vouldn't really characterise the project in that way. It is not a thematic project. It is just about shos.ing artists' $'ork. In fact, I ivould say that the dir''ersiw of the progranme is probabl,v one ol' its strengrhs. >

So, the project is encouraging people 10 think about film, as a medium, in a different way? Eractll'. It is t4'ing to ask people to step out ol the way in rvhich they might ordinarily approach cinema and to consider a diflerent range of experiences. We are also republishing four text pieces by Yoko Ono from 1964 which are insh'uctions for fiLms. In some senses, they are imaginarl' films, which the audience receives instmctions fbr and constructs irr their own minds. The audience is also free to make the work rvhich they are instructed to make. Each dav of the Fair there rvi1l be a diflerent instmction piece. Part of our desire to republish them in this way rvas to open people's minds to alternatir''e way-s of approaching the work" Who should come? Every*one should come. There are some people who will actuaily know something about the material alread,v and then want to come and see it, but otherwise the audience is incredibiy broad. Certainlli the diversity of the programmes and the performances is such that it attracts a real cross-section. \,v"e n'ou1d like to encourage peopie to come specially lbr the cinema, so that the cinema itsell becomes a reason to r.isit the Fair.
