GENERAL DESCRIPTION
The IPS-EVAL-EH-02 is an evaluation kit that demonstrates wireless environmental sensing, energy harvesting, efficient energy storage and power regulation in a convenient form factor tailored for the development of autonomously powered wireless sensor systems. Harvested energy is stored in the integrated industry-leading THINERGY thin film solid state MEC201 Micro-Energy Cell (MEC). The MEC201 is the ideal energy storage device enabling deeply embedded applications to accept minute amounts of harvested energy while being able to last the lifetime of the application. This combination of unique features subsequently provides the lowest cost of ownership power solution for low power wireless systems. In addition, the IPS-EVAL-EH-02 incorporates the MiWiTM 2.4GHz IEEE Std. 802.15.4 RF Transceiver Module from Microchip Technology Inc., a MAX17710 power management IC from Maxim Integrated Products, four environmental sensors, and an amorphous silicon solar panel to provide energy to the MEC. The duty cycle of sensor sampling and wireless transmission of sensor data is dynamically controlled and varies depending on the amount of solar energy detected. The wireless transmissions occur once every 60 seconds to 600 seconds depending on the level of measured input energy. This feature ensures the circuit consumes the least amount of power possible in low energy conditions, and allows more than 48 hours of operation on a single charge with no available light. The MiWi RF Transceiver Module transmits the measured sensor data to a coordinator node, connected to a personal computer which graphically displays current and historical data using the graphical user interface (GUI), included in the IPS Gauge Demo software.

The IPS-EVAL-EH-02 wireless environmental sensor system can be customized by the user to accommodate user designed energy harvesting daughter cards, firmware and sensors.
