The Polish Question

What actually happened with the country you are writing about in the historical Congress of

Vienna?

Poland was re-divided among Russia, Prussia, and Austria, with Russia benefiting primarily.

Warsaw was set up as a kingdom in personal union with Russia, while Krakow and its

surrounding territory were made a republic under the protection of Russia, Austria, and Prussia.

The majority of Poland (grand duchy of Warsaw) was given to Russia, and the remaining area

(Krakow) was split between Prussia and Austria.

Pros that resulted

Polish territory maintained peace with surrounding countries for more than 40 years after it

was divided

Cons that resulted

Russia already had military power, leaders, and plenty of land. The addition of the vast

majority of Poland only increased her strength and power, and advanced her boundaries nearer to

her enemies.

With the hindsight you have now, how would you have changed what happened with your

country?

I would have distributed Poland more evenly between Prussia, Austria, and Russia in a way

that benefits each country.

For our project, to achieve the best results and gain the most points, the distribution of land

would go as follows:

Distribution of Poland #1 Distribution of Poland #2

Russia-3/10 Russia-3/10
Prussia-3/10 Prussia-0/10
Austria-3/10 Austria-6/10
Independent-1/10 Independent-1/10
Total-10/10 Total-10/10

Goal #1-Keep any power from gaining fifty percent or more of any area (five or more tokens)

As seen above, Russia, Prussia, and Austria would be limited to three Polish tokens apiece.

However, this would also benefit Prussia as they are required to get three Polish tokens.

Alternatively, we could divide Poland between Russia and Austria, giving Russia one third of the

land, Austria two thirds, and giving the last one third to an independent state. This option would

not follow goal #1 but would prevent Prussia from achieving her goal of three Polish tokens.

Nevertheless, option #1 is the best alternative.

Goal #3-Maximize (than two) the number of independent state tokens given

Using this method, Poland would be divided between one independent state. (only one more

independent state would be needed to achieve our goal)

How are our opponents looking to divide up your country?

Russia is fighting for one half or more of Poland and is trying to avoid any independent

countries from controlling her. Prussia is also battling to achieve at least one third of our

territory.

Do any of them want the same thing?

Russia and Poland have similar goals on the distribution of Poland, Britain and France have

similar goals in that they are both striving for a balance in power.

How might our opponents ally together to achieve their goal?

We (Britain) should ally with France to achieve a balance in the distribution of territories.
