Christ the King Mission Statement

The People of Christ the King in Lombard are a welcoming, vibrant faith community building the kingdom of God through our many ministries. We celebrate our diversity, seeking to realize the gifts of each member of our parish, as we are all joined together under one faith, in a spiritual journey of evangelization, service to others, and a reverence for all life. In the Eucharist, we find new life, and bring this life to others through stewardship, education, and worship.

A STEWARDSHIP MOMENT
The Letter to the Ephesians urges us to be mindful that part of our life together in the Eucharist means being kind to one another, compassionate and forgiving, just as Christ has forgiven us. What can we do this week to show our kindness, compassion and forgiving attitude toward others in our family of faith? How can we be even better stewards of our faith community as, what St. Paul refers to as Imitators of God?

Have you been trying to call us?

We experienced technical problems with our telephones from August 3-8 and at times our telephone number was not working. We apologize to our parishioners and guests who may have been trying to contact us during that time. The issues have been addressed, and hopefully by the time you are reading this, our phones will be back online. Again, we apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused you. CTK Parish Staff

Ten Commandments for Eucharistic Reverence

These Ten Commandments are taken from Our Reverence for the Most Holy Eucharist; O Come, Let Us Adore Him by Fr. Charles M. Mangan. Take time this week to work on this one commandment. We will continue to print one commandment each week. For an archive, please view previous bulletins on our website: www.ctklombard.org. II. Prepare well for each Mass we attend. The Holy Sacrifice of the Mass, rooted in Jesus Last Supper celebrated on Holy Thursday evening, is Calvary perpetuatedthe re-presentation of His Sacrifice on Good Friday. It continues to our day the Calvary eventJesus selfless Offering unto death to His Father through the Paraclete. We adore our Eucharistic Lord when we prepare to receive Him worthily in Holy Communion by doing as the Church mandates: assenting to the Churchs teaching regarding the Holy Eucharist; fasting from food and drink (medicine and water may be taken) for one hour before receiving Holy Communion (the sick are excused); confessing to a priest in the Sacrament of Penance our mortal sins that we have not yet confessed. (A mortal sin is a thought, word, desire or action that involves grave matter with sufficient reflection and full consent of the will.) Frequent confession of venial sins is highly encouraged. Many choose to perform one of these spiritual exercises before Mass: reading the Scriptures to be used during the Sacred Liturgy; reciting the Rosary of the Blessed Virgin Mary; making the Way (the Stations) of the Cross.

Bread of Life explanation for Sunday August 12th

Introduction: We are living in a world where people of all races and creeds hunger more for spiritual sustenance than for physical food. In response to the spiritual hunger of people in his own day, Jesus proclaims himself to be the bread of life that came down from heaven." Scripture lessons: The first reading describes the physical and spiritual hungers experienced by the prophet Elijah. The bread of life Jesus speaks about is prefigured in this reading by the miraculous food with which the angel nourished the Prophet Elijah in the desert while he was fleeing from the soldiers of Queen Jezebel. After being nourished by the Lord, Elijah was strengthened for the long journey of forty days to Mount Horeb where God instructed him to continue his prophetic work. The second reading presents Christ Jesus, the bread of life, as a sacrificial offering to God for a fragrant aroma. Paul reminds the Ephesian Christians that, instead of seeking satisfaction in anger, slander, bitterness and malice, they are to nourish one another with compassion, kindness and mutual forgiveness. Todays gospel describes Jesus discourse in the synagogue at Capernaum on his return there after his miraculous feeding of the five thousand. During the discourse, Jesus reveals himself as the true bread of life that came down from heaven, to give life to the world. Jesus proclaims himself as the new and perfect manna, the incarnate Son of God literally "come down from heaven." This means that the Holy Eucharist actually gives us a share of eternal life while we are still on earth. But some of Jesus' followers turned away when he explained the source of his mysterious power and his heavenly origin. Life messages: 1) Let us accept the challenge to become bread and drink for others: "You are what you eat?" Let us recognize that Jesus in the Holy Eucharist, whom we consume, is actually God Who assimilates us into His being. Then, from Sunday to Saturday we will grow into Jesus, as he grows in us, our lives will be transformed by the power of the Holy Spirit, and we will become more like him. Thus, we shall share in the joyous and challenging life of being the body of Christ for the world bread for a hungry world, and drink for those who thirst for justice, peace, fullness of life, and even eternal life. In other words, the Eucharist challenges us to sacrifice ourselves for others, as Christ has done. 2: Let us appreciate Christs presence in the Holy Eucharist: Since the Holy Eucharist is "the body and blood, together with the soul and divinity of our Lord, Jesus Christ, the Sacrament a) increases our intimate union with Christ; b) preserves, increases, and renews the sanctifying grace we received at Baptism; c) cleanses us from past sin and preserves us from future sins; d) strengthens the theological virtue of charity in us, thus enabling us to be separated from our disordered attachments and to be rooted in Christ; and e) unites us more deeply with the mystery of the Church.

Sanctuary of Life From within the heart of the world, the family has a decisive and determinative relationship with life. As a Sanctuary of life, the family must welcome it, defend it, accompany it during its development, especially during the whole process of its education. The family lovingly bears witness to the uniqueness of new life. The instruction of the Didache, Thou shalt not kill the child in its mothers womb (2, 1), incorporated into the living tradition of the Church, must resound even today from the heart of every household. Only God is the Lord of life!" (Cardinal Alfonso Lopez Trujillo, President, Pontifical Council for the Family, Homily to Pontifical Academy for Life, February, 1997). 1 Kgs 19:4-8, Eph 4:30 - 5:2, Jn 6:41-51. Elijah was fed on his journey to Horeb; the Israelites were fed on their journey to the Promised Land; we are fed on our journey to Heaven. In all three cases, God does the feeding. We also see that in all three cases, Gods children complain when they face the struggles of the journey. The greatest temptation is to fail to trust God and a failure to trust is what often leads to the devastating results we see in the Culture of Death. In their desert journey (see Exodus 15-17), the sin of the Israelites was to grumble in distrust. Their lack of trust, in fact, was the reason they had to wander for forty years instead of going directly on a journey that could have only taken a few weeks. Even when God fed them with manna, they continued to grumble, getting tired of the same food every day. Some even wanted to go back to Egypt. Slavery seemed less challenging. At least they knew what to expect. The Gospel passage from John 6 is like a replay of that desert grumbling. The Jews murmured about Jesus, John says just like they had murmured about the manna. We grumble too about the difficulties of the journey, which is why Paul has to give the Ephesians the admonitions he gives in todays second reading. But Paul also gives the answer: Be imitators of GodLive in love, as Christ loved us and handed himself over for us as a sacrificial offering The Gospel passage shows how Christ hands himself over to us in the flesh, on the cross, in the Eucharist that we may have life. We are to imitate the mysteries we celebrate at the altar. The Eucharist teaches us how to live. The food we receive gives us strength for a journey in which we are called to give ourselves away. Some grumble about having to sacrifice, but we see sacrifice as a life-giving gift. Some grumble because things get in the way of their plans for life. But God commanded the Israelites to gather only the manna they needed for the day, and we pray for God to give us our daily bread. God is already in our future; yes, we must plan certain things, but we must trust for even more. The more we trust, and the more we sacrifice, the more we will give life, and the less we will grumble. Priests for Life

St. Lawrence Seminary High School is a Catholic college preparatory boarding high school owned and operated by the Capuchin Franciscan friars. St. Lawrence is a place where students live, learn, work and pray together. Our global student population experiences a variety of cultures, traditions, ways of life, and diversity of thought. Students come to St. Lawrence because they seek a foundation that will give them the academic, social, and spiritual tools to become religious and lay leaders in the Catholic Church and the world. Besides the college prep curriculum, students and parents choose SLS because of its religious formation program in the Catholic tradition with an emphasis on vocational discernment and service to others through ministry in the emerging church. Summer Faith Challenge!

Year of Faith Formation

Our Holy Father, Pope Benedict XVI, has declared the upcoming year a Year of Faith. This coincides with the 50th anniversary of the opening of the Second Vatican Council. The Diocese of Joliet is offering a morning of prayer and reflection for liturgical ministers at the St. Charles Borromeo Pastoral Center in Romeoville on Saturday, September 29, 2012. We invite all liturgical ministers to gather this morning to reflect on the importance of the Second Vatican Council for the life of the Church. Our morning will include prayer, reflection moments and discussion on how this great meeting continues to shape the life of our Church presently and in the future. This morning of prayer will be led by Reverend Ronald J. Lewinski, the former director of the Office of Worship of the Archdiocese of Chicago and presently pastor of St. Mary of the Annunciation Parish, Mundelein, IL. Fr. Lewinski is a frequent speaker at national and diocesan liturgical meetings and the author of many articles and books on liturgical and pastoral issues. I strongly encourage you to attend this event with other liturgical ministers from around the diocese. Please RSVP to me via email or call 630.396.6075 if you wish to attend this wonderful opportunity. Car-pools will be organized closer to the event, so if you are willing to drive, please include that info in your RSVP. Thank you!

Run, dont walk

If you think you dont sin and dont need the Sacrament of Reconciliation, run dont walk to the nearest confessional. If we say, We are without sin, we deceive ourselves (1 John 1:8). Unconfessed sin, especially when it goes unnoticed, forms a barrier between us and God. Penance, absolution, and life amendment helps to break it down.
