Good Teaching: The Top Ten Requirements Number 9 from an article that appeared in The Teaching Professor. Requirement #9 Good teaching is about mentoring between senior and junior faculty, teamwork, and being recognized and promoted by one's peers. Effective teaching should also be rewarded, and poor teaching needs to be remediated through training and development programs.

Displaying Student Work

In the IEP department we strongly encourage teachers to display student work, both in and outside of the classroom. Could all teachers please be aware that this work should be marked / corrected before being displayed. If work is displayed showing mistakes not corrected then this could have a negative effect on our students. Ajarn Montiras Messages Hello IEP Staff, How was your long weekend? I hope everyone had a happy time. This week we have Listening CATs for Grades 1 6 and Opening House for Grade 1 parents. Next week, we also have Speaking CATs. On Friday, August 10, 2012, we should all wear Thai fabric clothing for the Celebration Ceremony for Her Majesty the Queens Birthday. So if you have Thai fabric clothing, please wear it. On Monday, August 13, 2012, there is a holiday to substitute for Her Majesty the Queens Birthday. Hope you have a nice holiday. Friday, August 17, 2012 is Preparation Day for the BCC 160th Anniversary. Since we will teach Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, please plan for only 3days of lessons. Thank you, Montira

Joke of the Week One day a little girl was walking down the sidewalk on her way to school, and in the middle of the sidewalk she saw a worm. She raised her foot to squish it, but just then, she heard a wee little voice. "Please don't squish me!" The worm had spoken! The girl stepped back instead of stepping on it. "If you can give me one good reason why I shouldn't squish you, then maybe I won't." "Ok, here's one really good reason," said the worm. "If you don't squish me I'll give you any three wishes you want." "But how do I know you're telling the truth?" said the little girl. "Why don't you try it?" said the worm. "Ok," she said. "For my first wish, I want 1,000 more wishes!" "Wow, you are smart!" said the worm. "Yeah, I always get A's on all my tests," the little girl bragged. "Ok, so what's your first wish going to be?" asked the worm. "I want to be very pretty," says the girl. And she was pretty. "I want to be rich and have pretty earrings and a nice shirt," says the little girl. "That's all for now, but when I want another wish I will just say it and it will happen, right?" "Of course" said the worm. "Well, I better be going now, I don't want to be late for school!" said the girl. "Bye!" said the worm. When the girl got to school, a very annoying boy named Robbie walked up to her. "Gonna get another hundred on the math test today?" he teased. "Oh my gosh!" the little girl says. "I forgot all about it! I didn't even study." Robbie started laughing and went off to tell the whole school the news. "Oh no!" the little girl says. "I wish I were dead!"

Teaching Tip Using Drama in the Classroom. Drama techniques that focus on getting across meaning with body as well as words can be useful in the language classroom. They can:

Encourage creativity. Motivate reluctant speakers. Appeal to physical learners. Reinforce the idea of language as a means of communication. Build student confidence.

Below are some drama activity ideas for the classroom; Mime and/or Movement Very simple! Students are given a word or phrase that they must act out. The rest of the class must then guess the correct language. Role-plays These can be created by students or the teacher. Allow time for students to rehearse before performing in front of others. Increase interest by including props and costumes. Act out video scenes Students watch a scene from a video and then attempt to recreate the scene. The rest of the class (who cannot see the video) must describe what the students are acting out. Puppet show Have students make their puppets and theater. They can write the script themselves or be provided one by the teacher. The rest of the class can score each performance or write a review. For elementary classes why not have the teachers put on a puppet play for the students? They might just love it! Music Find a song or chant relevant to your current topic of study. Have them perform to each other or another class. For younger learners invent some actions they can use as they sing. For older ones have them make a music video (Use the department video camera and actually film it too!)
