0 INTRODUCTION Open-source software (OSS) is computer software that is available in source code form: thesource code and certain other rights normally reserved for copyright holders are provided under asoftware license that permits users to study, change, improve and at times also to distribute the software. 2.0 THE LATEST OPEN SOURCE APPLICATION SOFTWARE MEANING OF OPEN SOURCE OS An open source (OS) operating system is a set of programs that schedule tasks, allocates storage and presents a default interface to the user between applications. But this OS is free, user have the right to use, modify and redistribute the software for better interoperability. 2.1 EXAMPLE OF OPEN SOURCE Example:Linux Linux is very similar to other operating systems, such as Windows and OS X.Linux is developed collaboratively, meaning no one company is solely responsible for its development or ongoing support. Companies participating in the Linux economy share research and development costs with their partners and competitors. The favorites Linux OS is Linux Ubuntu, Linux Redhat, Linux Caldera

3.0 THE LATEST OPEN SOURCE APPLICATION SOFTWARE 3.1 MEANING OF OPEN SOURCE APPLICATION SOFTWARE Open source application software is computer software that is available in source code form for which the source code and certain other rights normally reserved for copyright holders are provided under a software license that permits users to study, change, and improve the software. Open source licenses often meet the requirements of the Open Source Definition. Some open source application software is available within the public domain. Open source application software is very often developed in a public, collaborative manner. Open source application software is the most prominent example of open source development and often compared to user-generated content or open content . 3.2 EXAMPLE OF OPEN SOURCE APPLICATION SOFTWARE Linux (see http://www.linux.org/): a computer operating system and kernel originating as a UNIX system and existing in many versions. GNOME (see http://www.gnome.org/): a desktop development environment providing tools for developing desktop applications (as well as its own basic desktop applications) and available for Linux and other UNIX systems.

SOFTWARE 5.0 PERVASIVE COMPUTING 5.1 MEANING OF PERVASIVE COMPUTING Refers to the use of computers in everyday life, including PDAs, smartphones and other mobile devices. It also refers to computers contained in commonplace objects such as cars and appliances and implies that people are unaware of their presence. One of the Holy Grails of this environment is that all these devices communicate with each other over wireless networks without any interaction required by the user

5.2 EXAMPLE OF PERVASIVE COMPUTING

As pervasive computing technology is integrated into the home of the future, more and more home situations are supported by computing applications. One example of this is the Playful Tray developed by researchers at the UBICOMP lab at the National Taiwan University. A common problem for parents of young children is mealtime behaviour. A lot of children use very long time to complete their meals and this causes stress for both parents and children. The Playful Trays aims to integrate digital play with eating and thereby improve the child meal completion time and reducing negative power play interaction between parents and children. In the tray a weighing sensor can detect when the child eats and a built-in LCD display provides feedback to child. Using principles from occupational therapy the researchers have designed a racing game in which the child moves a cartoon character by eating. The Playful tray is an example of a part of pervasive computing called Persuasive Computing, that deals with modifying human behaviour by using pervasive computing technology to not only detect and track behaviour, but also modify behaviour by interacting with the system.
