This afternoon Im going to be presenting to you our Critical Thinking group assignment on Animal Abuse as a social issue. So, Ill start off by giving you an overview of social issue and then Ill go on to filling you in on the reason of why animal abuse is a social issue. Before I begin my presentation today, let me introduce my group membersDu Yen, Rou Ann, Yun Ying, Chiew Ling, Chao Hwee, and Jia Kee. Social issues are matters which directly or indirectly affect a person or many members of a society and are considered to be problems, controversies related to moral values, or both. In short, it is defined as any behavior(s) that exist and cause an impact on society. So, what is animal abuse? Let me show you a video on animal abuse. How do you think about the video? It was damn cruel and inhuman right? The California Penal Code defines animal abuse as the malicious or intentional maiming, mutilation, torture or wounding of a living animal There are several reasons for why animal abuse is a social issue. First of all, it does impact society. Why I say so? Because there is a connection between animal abuse and criminal violence .Many animal abusers later go on to violently harm people, so it is a serious issue. According to National Crime Statistics, 48% of convicted rapists abused animals in the past.70%-80% of spousal abuse victims situations have also included animals.88% of child abuse situations have reported cruelty to animals. And 100% of serial killers have abused animals. Moreover, certain parts of our society actually contribute to the growing number of abusers, especially when it comes to teenagers. Take the movie industry, for instance. There are numerous films out there that show an animal abuser as a hero; they do not say that animal abuse are good explicitly, but the overall message from the film is that the particular abuser is good, and if he/she is doing animal abusing, it is fine for other people to

do the same. It means this particular part of the society facilitates the spread of such social problem as animal abuse. Lastly, there is a rise in animal protection laws recently. For example, Environmental Protection and Wildlife Law, Animal Act 1953, Marine Mammal Protection Act (MMPA), Animal Protection Law, and Animal Welfare Act. The rise in animal protection laws gives evidence that the people are petitioning their local, state, and federal leaders to mandate stricter and more severe sanctions against any person found guilty of animal abuse.
