Local media describe the citys private military defense industry as the areas bread and butter. 3 Defense contractors are some of the largest businesses in the city 4 and employ over five thousand workers 5. Three of the countrys top defense contractors BAE Systems, Raytheon and ITT help manufacture arms and related military equipment at facilities in Fort Wayne 6. Three of the states top defense contractors Raytheon, ITT and Petroleum Traders do the same 7. Of the billions of dollars Indiana receives each year 8 from the countrys more than half-trillion dollar defense budget 9, over $1 billion can flow to Fort Wayne each year 10.

The citys more than 200 private defense contractors received approximately $8 billion from the United States military from 2000 to 2011 11. Government contracts awarded to the Fort Wayne facilities of private defense contractors directly fund the development of American military aircraft 12 13 14 15 16 17, ships 18 19, submarines 20 , tanks 21 22, missiles 23 24 25, rockets 26, torpedoes 27, cannons 28, mortars 29, firearms 30 31 32, fuel 33 34 , armored vehicles 35 36 37 and electronics 38 39 40 41 42 43 44. The United States military used arms and equipment made at Fort Wayne facilities in its wars and operations in Iraq and Afghanistan 45 46 47 48 49, Libya 50 51 52, South Korea 53, and possibly Pakistan 54 55. The Fort Wayne sites also supplied arms and equipment for the militaries of foreign countries including Australia 56, Bangladesh 57, Canada 58, Columbia 59, Egypt 60 61, Iraq 62, Jordan 63, Lebanon 64, Kuwait 65, Morocco 66, Poland 67, Saudi Arabia 68, Spain 69, Yemen 70 and dozens of others 71 72 73 . Work at these Fort Wayne facilities supports defense contractors whose business is to encourage the expansion American imperialism. In the summer of 2012 alone, Raytheon announced it was testing precision unmanned drone bombers 74, developing high-energy laser weapons 75, and contracting with the U.S. Navy for nearly $1 billion in missile sales 76. BAE Systems during the same time announced production of Advanced Kill laser-guided rockets for the U.S. Marines 77 and a military contract with the air force of the kingdom of Saudi Arabia 78, a key U.S. ally and one of the most oppressive dictatorships in the world 79 80 81. ITT, also in the summer of 2012, announced a $300 million cyber security contract with the U.S. Air Force 82 as well as an electronic warfare contract with the monarchy of Oman 83, a U.S. ally 84. 2012, lobbyists for these major defense contractors fought for the continued expansion of government spending on private defense contractors despite the countrys economic recession and the threat of cuts to public programs supporting the poor 85 86 87. In fact, an advocate for the industry even encouraged new wars with Iran, China and North Korea in order to expand business opportunities for defense contractors 88. Below is a closer look at the top defense contractor facilities in Fort Wayne.

Raytheon Location: 1010 and 1320 Production Road, Fort Wayne, IN 46808 Employees: 950 89 Products: Mission solutions for networking, command and control, battlespace awareness, and air traffic management 90 as well as military and industrial testing 91 92 Value of Defense Contracts 2001-2011: $2.2 billion 93 94 Notable Contracts: This facility received a $76 million defense contract extension in 2008 for a military data system it bragged had already directed tens of thousands of munitions, rockets, and long-range missiles safely to their targets during the Iraq War 95.

ITT Location: 1919 W. Cook Road, Fort Wayne, IN 46818 Employees: 1,200 96 Products: Networked communications, sensing and surveillance, electronic warfare, navigation, air traffic solutions and information systems with growing positions in cyber security, composite aerostructures, logistics and technical services 97 Value of Defense Contracts 2001-2011: $4.6 billion 98 99 100 101 Notable Contracts: This facility received a $160 million contract in 2008 102 to provide engineering support across the world 103 to U.S. Naval warships deployed for the protection of economic and/or military shipping, protection of Marine amphibious force(s), and the establishment of an international U.S. naval presence in support of national interests 104.
