Course Examination 2008 CISCO NETWORKING (CCNA)


Wednesday, 8 October 2008 10.00 am 1.00 pm

Time allowed: 3 hours

There are TWO parts to this paper: attempt BOTH of them and follow carefully the instructions in each. Part 1 carries 60% of the total examination marks. This part contains EIGHT questions and you should attempt ALL the questions. Each question carries a different mark as shown at the end of each question. Your answers should be written in the answer book provided, stating the question numbers in the box on the front page. You are advised to spend about 1 hour 50 minutes on this part. Part 2 carries 40% of the total examination marks. This part contains THREE questions, of which you should attempt TWO. Each question carries twenty marks. You are advised to spend about 1 hour 10 minutes on this part. At the end of the examination Check that you have written your personal identifier and examination number on each answer book used. Failure to do so will mean that your work cannot be identified. Put all your used answer books together with your signed desk record on top. Fasten them in the top left corner with the round paper fastener. Attach this question paper to the back of the answer books with the flat paper clip.

Question 1

You should attempt ALL the questions from this part. Write a plan for an extended access control list (ACL) to meet the requirements listed below. Explain what each line in your list does. (a) Block traffic from the sixth subnet (use subnet 0) of 200.20.20.0/28 from accessing HTTP. (4 marks) (b) All hosts should be stopped from accessing 196.0.0.1 for any purpose. (3 marks) (c) All other traffic should be allowed. (2 marks) (Total 9 marks)

(a) What are the characteristics of a classful routing protocol? (2 marks) (b) List, for each of the classes of IP addresses from A to C inclusive the address range in dotted decimal of the first octet and the maximum number of networks in each class. (6 marks) (Total 8 marks)

Question 4

(a) List the four values that a client needs assigned by DHCP (dynamic host control protocol) to enable connection to the Internet. (2 marks) (b) Explain how the dynamic allocation of an IP address is activated and maintained. (6 marks) (Total 8 marks)

Question 5

Explain briefly the principles of a hierarchical design model as used to build a small/medium sized LAN. You should name the layers and list the benefits. (8 marks) (Total 8 marks)

Question 6

Create a suitable aggregate address and subnet mask for the following routing table entries: 198.16.77.0, 198.16.76.0, 198.16.75.0, 198.16.74.0 Be sure to show all of your working. (5 marks) (Total 5 marks)

Given the Class A network 10.0.0.0 create a subnet mask for 250 subnets. Identify 50th and VLSM for a further 25 subnets. Show all of your working. Assume subnet 0 is used. (7 marks) (Total 7 marks)

You should attempt TWO questions from this part. This question is about switches and switching. (a) Explain the steps taken by a switch to build a forwarding database or switching table and how this database or table is then used by the switch to forward frames. (6 marks) (b) Explain the two common methods used to buffer frames before forwarding. (9 marks) (c) Describe briefly the role of VTP (VLAN Trunking Protocol) and where it would be implemented in a network. (5 marks) (Total 20 marks)

This question is about routers and routing. (a) Explain how routers automatically learn about networks and forward packets. Your answer should discriminate between routing and routed protocols, giving two examples of each. (10 marks) (b) What information is included in the Cisco IOS command to configure a static route? List three uses of a static route. (6 marks) (c) Describe, using the analogy of signs and maps, the key differences between distance vector (like a road sign) and link-state (like a road map) routing protocols. (4 marks) (Total 20 marks)
