My 9 year old brother Matthew, because the things he says are hilarious and I would want to make sure he's learning and growing up in the right way.

WHY IS MAFA IMPORTANT?:

If I had to choose 3 ways to describe Filipinos, this would be it. 1) We are very good at adapting to the environment that we live in. Who would've thought a Filipino could survive in the snow? 2) We love meeting other Filipinos. That's why our bond with our Filipino organizations and between the different MAFA schools are so strong 3) We love being Filipino. We love to spread our culture through dance, language, and singing karaoke. We proudly display our Filipino culture, and live the Filipino lifestyle. MAFA is representative of these things for our college Filipino organizations in the Midwest. When we bring all the great minds and passion of MAFA together we can do great things for the Filipino culture.

I own every season of Friends. Favorite show hands down. I quote it in everyday conversation.

FAVORITE MAFA MEMORY:

My favorite experience thus far has been our board retreat. It was so much fun getting to know everyone on a personal level and discussing the potential of MAFA with innovative, creative, and strong people.

PERFECT DATE?:

Thats a tough one, i'd have to say april 25th because its not too hot, not too cold, all you need is a light jacket. teehee but forreal i'd have to say good dates are the ones that are spontaneous and there is a flow of conversation. A lil guitar playing and making me laugh wouldn't hurt either :) https://www.facebook.com/christine.trovela

University of Toledo|| Junior || Exercise Science I think A lot of Filipino Americans in the mid-west grow up in places where Filipino culture is not readily available. MAFA is important because It is a good way to connect with other people who share the same culture. It provides people with great opportunities to network with, and learn from one another.

This is a tough one. I would have to say April 25th. because its not too hot, not too cold. All you need is a light jacket.

FAVORITE THING ABOUT FILIPINO CULTURE:

I love the fact that Filipino culture is diverse within itself

____________________ WHY IS MAFA IMPORTANT:

MAFA offers a totally different perspective. It allows us to view things on a bigger scale, connect with amazing people across state borders, and collectively develop our Filipino culture. How many organizations can say that?

This is a tough one. I would have to say April 25th. because its not too hot, not too cold. And all you need is a light jacket. LOL But if you really want to know, Id say a date where we try something new. I love learning things and I dont mind making a fool of myself :p

PERFECT DATE?:

FAVORITE THING ABOUT FILIPINO CULTURE:

I love the Filipino spirit. So many filipinos have this enthusiasm, pride and fun-loving nature that I really appreciate.

____________________ FAVORITE MAFA MEMORY:

My favorite MAFA experience was during Conference 2011 because I was just a freshman, it was my first time on a MAFA event, I had the chance to meet a lot of people in the Midwest, and it helped me become more open and social.

RANDOM FACT:

I hate roller coasters because they scare me (I know, im weak LOL). Last time I rode one was five years ago and never rode it again.

FAVORITE THING ABOUT FILIPINO CULTURE:

My favorite thing about Filipino/Filipino-American culture is being polite because Filipinos in the USA still address their elders politely by using kuya, ate, po, opo, and mano po. https://www.facebook.com/JOY016

WHY IS MAFA IMPORTANT?:

MAFA serves as a tool to build bridges and break down barriers in the Filipino-American community throughout the Midwest. As it says in our mission statement for this year, "Our mission is to create a collective impact by building meaningful connections for Midwest Empowerment", and I truly believe MAFA effectively achieves that.

OUTREACH

FAVORITE THING ABOUT FILIPINO CULTURE?:

It used to always be the value of family and my mom's food. I mean seriously, who doesn't love sinigang?? But when I first joined PSA, it didn't take long for me to find yet another passion: cultural dancing. I was never too involved with cultural dances in my high school's Filipino club; I was always too scared to dance tinikling. And now? I absolutely love it. I love how beautifully diverse Filipino folk dances are. They tell such intriguing stories. I think it's amazing how this aspect of our culture has persevered throughout time, history, and distance. Many of us are 2nd generation Filipino-Americans and some of us have never even been to the Philippines. For some reason, our language seems to have slipped through the cracks of Western culture. However, in performing these dances, we are actively involving ourselves in our culture, keeping it alive from generation to generation.

RANDOM FACT:
I'm Mexican and I love it, but I love how Filipinos value their culture a lot more than other cultures do. I love the friendly people, great sense of humor, high spirits.I also like finding similarities and differences between the Mexican and Filipino cultures. I like learning about different people and Filipinos have always opened their doors to teach me something new about them.

FAVORITE MAFA MEMORY?:

TOO MANY! Meeting my BA Looters, going around hotel rooms and talking to new people, the bachata dance off w/Manny Delarosa & I vs. Paco Martinez & Jessie Magsino! Last but not least, the traditional chant off between my school PSA MN and Madison's FASO. All of these will always be treasured memories of my MAFA adventures with wonderful people.

WHY IS MAFA IMPORTANT?:

Every one in MAFA is super welcoming, like if you had an issue, people will take the time out to help you. Its good to know people throughout the Midwest and is a good stress reliever because its fun to hangout.

WHAT ARE YOU UP TO NOW?:

Just started my job as a digital assistant coordinator here in California. I work with art buyers in the production team, I hire photographers to market the products, and a lot of different things. Go to work, come home from work. But aside from work I hangout with the family, wake board, go tubing, kayaking.

Hellooo MAFA members, Secretary here! Thanks for reading our rst MAFA newsletter of the school year. We just wanted to spread some light on what weve been working on what we have in store. I hope that youre as excited for this year as we all are. MAFAs doing big things! As this year being my rst year involved in MAFA, Id just like to give a shout out to this amazing organization. Not only has it connected schools together but its really allowed for some awesome relationships to develop. The people in this organization really make it unique. We have inspiring and strong individuals that arent afraid to cross borders and delve into something new. Thats already a big feat in itself, so kudos to you all :) This summer alone has already made a strong impact. With the Cedar Point and Leadership Retreat being a success and the MAFA families in full launch, weve already help make this year a memorable one. Lets keep the ball rolling and carry this enthusiasm throughout the school year. With MAFAlove, Grace Geremias ggeremias07@gmail.com
