Healthy eating is in the grain
By KATHLEEN DUFFY
The Mt. Laurel Sun
Quinoa, pronounced KEEN-
wah, came into focus at the Mt.
Laurel YMCAs recent healthy
cooking demonstration hosted by
certified nutritionist and person-
al trainer Diane Suran.
Quinoa is the hottest, newest
grain, said Suran during the
workshop to the approximately 20
cookers in attendance.
The grain, which actually fu-
eled Inca armies for 500 years, is a
great source of protein and fiber,
she explained.
Doctor it up with vegetables
and an abundantly healthy meal
can be accomplished.
Eating right can sometimes be
tough, said Laurel Allen, wellness
director at the YMCA.
Most people struggle with
that. They can come to the gym.

f you purchased your house before
2007, youve probably endured
about five years of misery. Your
home probably isnt worth as much as
it was back then. The housing market
has been kicked around, the news al-
ways seemed to be bad and getting
worse, and people had to wonder if the
downward spiral would ever end.
Well, maybe it has.
Zillow reported last month that the
second quarter was a good one for
home prices. They actually went up
year over year. Not a lot, but up is bet-
ter than down.
And, considering the economy has-
nt exactly been on fire, the news is es-
pecially promising.
If the trend continues, its great
news for the economy.
From a purely practical standpoint,
rising values can free up equity (al-
though it might take awhile to get peo-
ple right side up on their home val-
ues). Then, homeowners can begin to
tap that equity to make repairs, pay off
other bills, etc. And when people spend
money, jobs are created.
It also would be a boost to the nation-
al psyche. A homes worth long has
been a kind of security blanket for
families. Over the years, there had
been ups and downs in the market, but,
again, over time, home values steadily
increased. There was a confidence that
you could always rely on your biggest
investment: your home.
That, of course, all changed about
five years ago.
Thats not to say that all will be well
by next Tuesday. The glut of foreclosed
homes, the negative equity many
homeowners still have and the like will
continue to weigh on the market. Were
not seeing a dramatic, sudden turn of
fortune. But the kind of sustained
growth Zillow reported definitely beats
the alternative.
At the least, maybe homeowners
have seen the worst of the housing
storm. Maybe they begin to regain a
little confidence in the future of their
home. Maybe they can relax. A little.

years or more for the news that was

Residents appalled by councils
lack of communication
We attended the council meeting of the
planning board for the property located be-
tween Route 73, Church, and Fellowship
and were appalled at the lack of communi-
cation and consideration that this council
appears to have.
As we are new to the township, we were
surprised to discover that this meeting was
not on the township's calendar. From what
we observed at the meeting, this redevelop-
ment area is a large project that much time
and money has been spent on, but no one
on the board had taken the time to visit the
site prior to the meeting. No one on the
council had been to the site since the grad-
ing had started over a month ago, so no
questions could be answered by the board
regarding it's current condition, and when
asked it the board would visit the site, the
mayor said he wouldn't, but assigned some-
one to go, as if his constituents were not
important enough for him to take the time
to even drive by the site. The landowners
who live in the neighborhoods of this pro-
posed development have to pay taxes and
fight through the horrendous traffic that
already is clogging these thoroughfares.
Additionally, is it true the businesses in
this development may have tax abatements
resulting in no tax benefits to Mount Lau-
rel Township for up to 10 years? The re-
sulting congestion will only add to woes
that people who live in this area face and
certainly make it more difficult to sell in
these uncertain times and may even lower
the property values and the Township's tax
base.
Also, it sounded like the board is abdi-
cating the type of businesses that can go
into a building. We heard a member say,
We can only control the box, not what
goes into it. Who controls the usage of
these buildings? Doesn't it matter to the
board what type of businesses come into
Mt. Laurel or if the area is already saturat-
ed by the type of businesses? For instance,
this is the third fitness center within a five-
mile radius.
Please don't pass the buck to the county
or the state as to the problems that are
made today will affect the entire area for a
very long time.
Thank you for your time and attention.

thas hard work with the teens of
Mt. Laurel was recognized in this
way, said library director Kathy
Schalk-Greene in a statement.
A yoga class series, centering
on teenage participants, will com-
mence in September and span for
one Saturday each month
through December, said Marker.
In July, Marker brought in Mt.
Laurel resident Chris Wilczews-
ki, a recent contestant on Ameri-
can Ninja Warrior to teach park-
our techniques to area children.
Hes always a great sport, she
said. That went really well.
Through the summers, she
manages a team of roughly 65
young volunteers who handle
summer book club registration as
well as prize distributions.
It can be challenging, she
said. This year, it was nice. We
actually have a teen intern that
helps manage that to some de-
gree.
Marker helps with the big
training session to review soft-
ware guidelines at the beginning
of the summer and gives the
teens the reigns.
They know that I am available
to them while they are on their
shifts, she said. It is a pretty in-
dependent volunteer program
once theyve gone through the
program.
Area teens look forward to the
Mega Mega Teen Tunes concert
series, which was initiated by
Marker.
According to a statement, the
performers are teen bands, the
publicity is done by teens and the
concerts, which are widely at-
tended, are hosted by them as
well.
Its basically a teen run con-
cert at the library, said Marker.
A lot of times, theyre kids from
Lenape High School.
The Teen Advisory Board has a
say in that process, she explained,
and the concerts are now in their
fifth year.
Its always a good time, she
said.

Northen speaks at workers

Capehart Scatchard Sharehold-
er, Lora V. Northen, Esq. recently
spoke at the 32nd annual National
Workers Compensation and Oc-
cupational Medicine Conference
for SEAK in Cape Cod, Mass.
In her presentation, Northen
discussed the benefits of post-

mine which workers compensa-
tion claims should be accepted
and which should be denied. Ad-
ditionally, Northen spoke on Sec-
tion 40 liens and spotting fraud in
workers compensation cases.
In addition to her responsibili-
ties as Co-Chair of the Workers
Compensation Department,
Northen, a Pennsauken resident,
focuses her practice in the repre-
sentation of employers, self-in-
sured companies, and insurance
carriers. Certified as a trial attor-
ney by the Supreme Court of New
Jersey in Workers Compensation
Law, Northen

their request. As of lately, the tree
removals have stopped.
I became alarmed that falling
tree branches (especially during
storms) could injure someone. I
have personally seen large
branches, fallen in the roadways.
This prompted me to contact the
township about how they would
address the problem. My first
feedback from the township was,
The township is reviewing their
responsibility with the township
attorney to determine the best
course of action. Then on Aug. 2,
the township removed about a
dozen dead trees on Academy
Drive (which were indeed very
hazardous.) Upon attending the
Aug. 6 regular council meeting, I
addressed the council about the
problem and was told that the
Township recognized their re-
sponsibility for the public thor-
oughfares, but for curbside trees
in front of residences, the respon-
sibility was unclear. The attorney
indicated the possibility of new
legislation that might declare the
resident being responsible.
My personal inclination is that
a new ordinance for sure can
name the responsibility for new
plantings, but for trees planted
years ago by the township; they
should have some responsibility.
The purpose of this letter is an
FYI to you and to suggest that you
to personally keep abreast of any
new ordinances regarding trees,
since such ordinances will not be
widely advertised. If the new or-
dinance does affect the resident
negatively, it will be up to the resi-
dent to solely or band together to
petition it.

They can do their cardio, but eat-
ing a proper diet is the hardest
thing, she said.
A rainbow of colors in your
diet is important, Allen added.
I think a lot of people dont
know what to do with all the dif-
ferent vegetables either,
she said, explaining that vegeta-
bles that are in season taste bet-
ter.
A quinoa meal can be whipped
up quickly, which is good for peo-
ple who tend to be on the go in
their daily lives.
Its simple and easy to make
while bringing new life into peo-
ples diets.
Nobody knows how to pro-
nounce it, she laughed.
Workshop attendees were
given various samples, quinoa
chips and salsa and ended with a
banana-based frozen dessert
made from a Yonanas machine.
Some foodie suggestions
Suran offered up healthy tid-
bits during the hour-long mid-day
session that was open to the com-
munity.
Pick up a piece of fruit, she
said, to have a snack with lower
calories.
Every day, she eats a handful
of mixed nuts to aid in feeling
full.
Depending on an individuals
health conditions, salt can be im-
portant as it retains water.
Suran buys store brand salt
with iodine rather than sea salt,
stating that iodine is important to
consume.
She also tries to always buy or-
ganic.
Definitely the milk, she em-
phasized.
Organic milk, Suran said, does
not have the hormones and an-
tibiotics that regular milk may
contain.
Organic milk comes from cows
that are nursing their calves
making enough milk for both the
calves and humans.
Little girls are getting their
periods earlier, she explained,
and boys are going through pu-
berty later as a result of the hor-
mones.
In her backyard garden, Suran
grows basil, parsley, chives and
oregano.
At the workshop, she added
some cilantro to kick (the
quinoa) up a notch.
According to Allen, the work-
shop is a great fit for anyone who
likes to cook and wants to try
something new and simple.
Suran will be hosting another
workshop at the nearby Burling-
ton-Riverfront YMCA on
Tuesday, Sept. 25 from noon to 1
p.m.
I think it went really well,
said Allen as attendees shuffled
out with happy stomaches.
