It is very soothing that todays consumer is conscious of energy utilisation. Often we hear people talking about Energy Audit. Energy Audit is a balance sheet of energy consumed, how efficiently it is being consumed, pointing to various means of saving and retrieving energy wherever possible. Electrical Energy forms a major part of energy consumption. It is however noticed that most of energy auditing advocates use advanced technology gadgets like high efficiency motors, CFLs, LED luminaries, etc for energy saving. This requires capital investment. Instead, use of existing appliances with proper installation and operational practices, timely maintenance, efficient control is also an appealing means of saving energy. Power factor improvement is one of those prominent practices to utilize existing appliance efficiently thus reducing electrical intake and ultimately the electricity bill. Now let us see what is this power factor about? Any electrical appliances require two kinds of power for its operation. One is called active power that we usually call as Watts and other, reactive power called as VArs. The power consumed by the appliance is combination of both these power called as VAs. Technically or . The appliance has its watt consumption on its label. We all conceive watts. However understanding VARs requires some analogy. Let us understand this using an example. Suppose a load of 100kg is to be transported from point A to point B. This job requires work to be done. Little thinking reveals that this job involves two components, first the load has to be lifted from ground and second it is to be carried from A to B. In- ability to do any one component results in failure of the job. It is particularly pointed out that we normally tend to account for the second component i.e. the work required to be done for carrying from location A to B, the first i.e. lifting the load and making it ready to be carried, being taken for granted. The importance of the first component is, if on the way from A to B if this component fails or withdrawn, the job will fail. In electrical terms the first component is the reactive power VAr, while the second component is watts. The total power VA being as given above. The ratio of watts to VA is called Power Factor. Cos = = Power Factor To minimize VA for given watts, VAr is to be reduced. Lowering VA increases Power Factor. Since VA is the total power requirement of the job, lowering its value increases process efficiency. Hence higher power factor is desirable. All the three power components are represented by Power triangle.
watt VA VAr

In order to get better insight into the methodology, let us stretch the above discussed analogy a little without losing the relevance. While the load is being carried from A to B if the load is supported by external means or some external force is applied to assist the lifting of the load then obviously the first component is reduced and stress on the main system is lessened. In electrical terms this means that if some external agency supplies VAr then the main supply has to supply only the Watts thereby reducing the VA. Hence at constant voltage this reduces the current loading. The process is pictorially depicted as below.

watt VA VA new

VAr

Figure (b) shows VAr compensation by external means (Capacitor). The figure is self explanatory. The active power associated with active current remains the same while the reactive power is compensated by external means. The new power triangle shows reduction in VA requirement. The external VArs requirement can be calculated for any desired power factor. VArs supplied externally = active power *(tan 1 tan 2) Capacitor requirement can then be calculated.

Advantages of Power Factor Improvement

Power factor improvement decreases VAr demand of load from the main system. This decreases the total VA to be supplied to the load. This puts fewer burdens on VA rating of supply such as Transformer, Generator. Since VA demand is decreased, at constant voltage current drawn also reduces which decrease the IR drop, called voltage drop, over the transmission line. Hence Voltage regulation is improved. Lesser current decreases the copper loss or I 2 R loss in the windings and transmission line. Lesser VA demand due to improved Power Factor means, the decreased VA power is released back to the system which now can be used elsewhere. Lastly lesser power consumption reduces the Electricity bill. Hence it is good practice on the part of consumer to maintain as high power Factor as possible. Moreover the electrical supply authorities have made this mandatory and penalty is imposed for poor Power Factor.

Power Factor improvement

How one can improve the Power factor of the electrical installation?

Energy saved is Energy produced and everyone should cultivate habits to minimize the wastage of Energy.
