Lulu is a really sweet, calm, afectionate 5 year old spayed kitty.
She has had two disappointments in her short life, where, through
no fault of hers, she has lost her home. Lulu is a cat who likes to
eat (she was found as an abandoned starving kitten), and has to
have her food intake controlled. Unfortunately, in her last home
she gained weight, and now it is essential that her diet and
exercise routine is managed properly. It is easy to do and she is
very adaptable. She is very healthy right now. Lulu will make a
wonderful companion. She is used to other cats and dogs. Please

Arts By Te Lake Festival
At the ARTS BY THE LAKE Festival on Saturday, Sep-
tember l from 10 am to 5 pm, the Kohan Garden in New
Denver will host artists, musicians, multimedia work-
shops for kids and adults, and Garden tours.
A dozen Slocan Valley artists and four music groups will
delight you as you stroll the Garden, watch working art-
ists, and enjoy the grandeur of Slocan Lake and Valhalla
Mountains.
Guided tours of the Kohan Gardens history, style and
botanical features will be scheduled between perform-
ances.
An experienced arts teacher and painter will ofer a
multimedia drop-in workspace for kids of all ages at $2

Healing In Guatemala
Reverend Emilie Smith, an Anglican priest who is well
known locally, will speak on Guatemalan justice, healing and
human rights on Tursday, August 23, 7 pm at St. Saviours
Anglican Church (corner of Ward and Silica) in Nelson.
Reverend Smith, who founded Peace House at Santa
Cruz del Quiche in Guatemala, a Christian and Mayan
Prayer House of Healing, will voice her concerns about
Canadian mining companies invading traditional com-
munity lands in that country, and the work of peace mak-
ing in the region.
Te event is by donation, and sponsored by KAIROS
and St. Saviours Anglican Pro-Cathedral. Chocolates and
handicrafs from Guatemalan women and community
cooperatives will be for sale.

Jumbo Update Summer 2012
Recently I learned from Psyche Brown, Manager of
Major Projects in the Resort Development Branch (RDB)
of the MFLR that since no development has been started
for the newly approved Jumbo Glacier Resort (JGR) the
public is allowed to use, as usual, all of the 5967 ha (over
14,750 acres or 22.5 square miles) of the resorts Con-
trolled Recreation Area (CRA). And until some develop-
ment occurs to change the status of the licence tenure
the whole CRA is considered Non-Exclusive Use.
Te reason the developer, Glacier Resorts Ltd (GRL),
has not begun anything is they are waiting for a decision
for the potential incorporation of the Mountain Resort
Municipality. Tere are certain restrictions on develop-
ment if municipality status is not in place so Mr. Oberti
is being cautious.
In reference to the July 24, 2012 Ktunaxa press release
stating they have decided to submit an application for
a judicial review (of the March 20, 2012 granting of the
Master Development Agreement MDA to GRL) Psy-
che does not know how that may impact the develop-
ment presently. Its up to the Attorney General to tell the
RDB. According to the 01-08-12 Invermere Valley Echo,
the possible French investors who ofer expertise, ski
lifs and other technology were surprised to learn, from
the postcards, there was such opposition about this pro-
ject...we do not go into a feld where things are not clear.
Te Wildlife Management Area (WMA), which is in-
tended to mitigate the resorts impact on grizzly bears,
is making preparations to begin creating guidelines for
the actual management. At this time there are no pub-
lic use guidelines nor is the exact location of the 52,000
ha WMA known, although it will be between the Pur-
cell Wilderness Conservancy, Panorama CRA and the
JG Resort CRA. Tus the public is free to use the back-
country as usual.
FROM A JUMBO CREEK CONSERVATION SOCI-
ETY SOURCE: In the Summer Season Catalogue for the
College-of-the-Rockies GRL ofered six workshops (ski
camps, wildlife viewing, photography, etc.) to take place
on the Farnham Glacier (where GRL holds the tenure)
at the old CODA camp area. All six were cancelled for
lack of interest.

HIKERS: Te Glacier Creek road is still closed to all
vehicular traf c starting at 0.0km. because of unstable
conditions and a bridge abutment being out. MoF has
gauges inserted in the roadbed which are being mon-
itored frequently. To check ongoing status reports in-
quire at the Kootenay Lake Forest District Of ce at 250-
825-1100. Ask for an update.

Te Columbia River downstream of the Keenleyside
Dam and the Kootenay River upstream from the confu-
ence to Brilliant Dam, provides for a popular sport fsh-
ery. Tese Rivers also support a Red Listed population of
White Sturgeon. Concern from local anglers that by-catch
or incidental catch of juvenile sturgeon is on the increase
and rainbow trout and walleye fshing success is in decline
has led the UCWSRI Community Working Group (CWG)
to implement an angler recruitment, education and infor-
mation sharing project.
Te objectives are to:
Collect information from anglers about fshing success
Gather thoughts on the general condition of the Col-
umbia and Kootenay Rivers
Share information with anglers about the Sturgeon Re-
covery Initiative
Quantify white sturgeon by-catch encounters during
the summer months
Public participation is critical to assess the degree of
sturgeon by-catch.
Although white sturgeon are the main subject of this
project, the information collected will beneft other native
aquatic species and further contribute to the overall health
of the Upper Columbia River ecosystem and its great fsh-
ery.
Te CWG hopes that information sharing with the an-
gling public will strengthen a cooperative efort towards
restoring a healthy self-sustaining white sturgeon popula-
tion, in balance with other fsheries values.

Te prenatal registry will operate from 10 am to 3 pm,
Tuesday through Friday. Te service is available for all
pregnant women in the pilot communities.
Interior Health is implementing the prenatal registry
using a phased approach and plans to expand the service
to all other communities within the region in early 2013.
We are very excited about this new service and we know
all pregnant women in the Interior Health region can beneft
from the ease and convenience of the prenatal registry, said
Anne Clarotto. We will use this pilot phase to make the
program the best it can be and we look forward to being able

AIDS Walk For Life
What is the Scotiabank AIDS Walk for Life?
Te Scotiabank AIDS Walk for Life is a National Fundrais-
ing campaign to support local AIDS organizations in over
120 communities across Canada. 100% of the funds raised
by the AIDS Walk for Life in the Kootenay Boundary are
used by Kootenay Boundary residents through ANKORS.
Te AIDS Walk is held in Nelson on Saturday, Septem-
ber 22 and begins at the corner of Ward and Baker, in
the parking lot between Sidewinders and Gericks Cycle
and Sport. Registration starts at 12 pm, the walk starts at
1 pm. Te Walk follows a route through Nelson, down
Front Street, and along the waterfront to Lakeside Park
Rotary Shelter (approximately three kilometres). Te day
will commence with a BBQ lunch.

Council recently restructured its Commissions and Committees to create bodies
that align with the guiding principles, directions and goals of the Path to
2040 Sustainability Strategy and the existing Comprehensive Cultural Policy.
The primary changes are:
The Advisory Planning Commission (APC) now has broader representation from
the cultural, economic, environmental and social sectors focusing on the four
pillars of sustainability; and
The Cultural Development Commission will now become the Cultural Development
Committee (CDC). In addition to making recommendations on the Arts, the CDC
will now be responsible for making recommendations on the addition of heritage
buildings to the Citys Heritage Register, advising on new heritage policies and
furthering the promotion of heritage throughout the City of Nelson.
