1. A circular arch of span 25 m with a central rise 5 m is hinged at the crown and
springing. It carries a point load of 100 kN at 6 m from the left support. Calculate.

(a) the reactions at the supports and the reaction at crown


(b) moment at 5 m from the left support. [16]

2. Calculate the support reactions in the two-hinged parabolic arch shown in figure 2
assuming that I=Ic sec θ. The effect of axial and shear forces can be ignored. [16]

3. Explain the Portal method for analyzing a building frame subjected to horizontal
forces. [16]

4. A continuous beam ABC, 16 m long is fixed at ends A and C and continuous


over support B. The first span of length 10 m is loaded with a UDL of intensity 6
kN/m and the second span is loaded with a central clockwise couple of 120 kN-m.
Using the slope deflection method, calculate the end moments and plot the bending
moment diagram. [16]

5. A portal frame ABCD of span 4m is subjected to a u.d.l. of 2 KN/m over the


member BC. The members AB and CD of lengths 4m and 2m are hinged at A and
D. Determine the moments at A,B,C&D using moment distribution. [16]

6. Analyse the portal frame shown in figure 6 by Kani’s method. Draw BMD.

1. A three-hinged arch rib has the form of a quadrant of a circle with the chord
horizontal and joining springing 20 m apart. The rib carries concentrated load of
20 kN acting through quarter span. Calculate

(a) the end reactions and the reaction at the crown


(b) the bending moment at the load point, and
(c) the bending moment at the other quarter span point. [16]

2. A parabolic arch, hinged at the ends has a span 30 m and rise 5 m. A concentrated
load of 12 kN acts at 10 m from the left hinge. The second moment of area varies
as the secant of the slope of the rib axis. Calculate

(a) the horizontal thrust and the reactions at the hinges,


(b) the maximum bending moment anywhere on the arch. [16]

3. Analyse the frame shown in figure3, by Cantilever method. Assume that all the
columns have equal area of cross-section for the purpose of analysis. [16]

4. A continuous beam ABCD, 13 m long, is fixed at A and overhang at D. The first
span of length 6 m is loaded with a UDL of intensity 2 kN/m, the second span of
length 5 m is loaded with a central point load of 5 kN and the end of overhand is
loaded with a point load of 8 kN. Using the slope deflection method, determine the
bending moment at the supports and plot the bending moment diagrams. [16]

5. Explain the substitute frame analysis by two cycle with the help of an example.

1. A symmetrical three-hinged circular arch has a span of 16 m and a rise to the


central hinge of 4 m. It carries a vertical load of 16 kN at 4 m from the left hand
end. Find

(a) the magnitude of the thrust at the springings


(b) the reactions at the supports, and
(c) the maximum positive and negative bending moment. [16]

2. A two-hinged parabolic arch of span 60 m and central rise 6 m is subjected to a


crown load of 40 kN. Allowing for rib shortening, temperature rise of 200 C and
yield of each support of 0.006 cm/10 kN, determine H. Take 1c = 600,000 cm4 , Ac
= 1000 cm2 , E=10 kN/mm2 , α = 11 ×10−6 /0 C, I = Ic secθ. [16]

3. Explain the Portal method for analyzing a building frame subjected to horizontal
forces. [16]

4. A beam ABC, 12 m long, fixed at A and C and continuous over support B. The
first span of length 6 m and loaded with a UDL of 2 kN/m for the whole and the
second span is loaded with central point load 12 kN. Using the slope deflection
method. Calculate the end moments and plot the bending moment diagram. [16]

5. By using moment distribution method, determine the support moments at all the
joints of the Portal frame shown in figure 5.

1. A parabolic arch rib, 20 m span and 3 m rise is hinged at the abutments and the
crown and carries a point load of 10 kN at 7.5 m from the left hand hinge. Calculate
the horizontal thrust and the bending moment at a section 7.5 m form right hand
hinge. What is the value of the greatest bending moment in the arch, and where
does it occur? [16]

2. A parabolic arch, hinged at the ends has a span 30 m and rise 5 m. A concentrated
load of 12 kN acts at 10 m from the left hinge. The second moment of area varies
as the secant of the slope of the rib axis. Calculate

(a) the horizontal thrust and the reactions at the hinges,


(b) the maximum bending moment anywhere on the arch. [16]

3. Analyse the building frame, subjected to horizontal forces, as shown in figure 3


Use Cantilever method, assuming that all the columns have the same area of cross-
section. [16]

4. A beam ABC, 10 m long, fixed at A and C is continuous over joint B. The first span
consists of 5 m with point load of 5 kN acting 3 m from left support and second
span is loaded with central point load of 8 kN. The beam has constant El for both
the spans. Using the slope deflection method, compute the end moments and plot
the bending moment diagram. [16]

5. Analyse the continuous beam shown in figure 5 using moment distribution method
of analysis and Sketch the SFD and BMD. Given AB=CD=6m and BC=4m. [16]

6. Explain the rotation contribution method for the frames with columns of equal
height and subjected to vertical loads only with fixed ends and also hinged ends.

7. Define the term “Flexibility” and draw BMD for the beam shown in figure 7 by
using flexibility method. EI is constant. [16]
