CLASSIFICATION: CNS agent, antipsychotic, atypical

2. Dose range and routes for adult & geriatric client.

PREPARATIONS: PO – (0.25, 0.5, 1, 2, 3, 4) mg tablets; 1mg/ml sol’n

3. Purpose prescribed. Underline reason your client is prescribed drug.

THERAPEUTIC EFFECTS: Effective in controlling symptoms of schizophrenia as well as other psychotic symptoms

USES: reduction or elimination of psychotic symptoms in schizophrenia and related psychoses. Seems to improve negative
symptoms such as apathy, blunted effect, and emotional withdrawal.
• Bipolar disorder, management of pts with dementia-related psychotic symptoms. Adjunctive tx of behavioral
disturbances in pts with mental retardation

4. Major side effects & drug interactions.

DRUG INTERACTIONS: may enhance the effects of certain antihypertensive agents.

• May antagonize the antiparkinson effects of bromocriptine, cabergoline, levodopa, pergolide, pramipexole, ropinirole.
• Carbamazepine may decrease risperidone levels.
• Clozapine may increase respiridone levels.
• Cisapride may cause dysrhythmia

SIDE EFFECTS: drowsiness, headache, insomnia, agitation, extrapyramidal symptoms, orthostatic hypotension
5. Nursing Implications & teaching.

• Do not engage in hazardous activity until response to drug is known

• Be aware of the risk of orthostatic hypotension
• Learn adverse effects and report those that are bothersome to Dr
• Wear sunscreen and protective clothing to avoid photosensitivity
• Notify Dr if you intend to become pregnant
