Shawnee sophomore heads to college
Special to The Sun
Shannon Igo poses for her dance recital pictures this past year. She plans to continue to pursue dance while attending Bard College.
By SHANNON CAULFIELD
The Medford Sun
Four years of high school and
four years of college are the typi-
cal lengths of time students
spend on education during their
teenage and young adult lives.
For Shannon Igo, after two years
of high school, shes ready to
begin her college career.
The now former Shawnee High
School sophomore will be attend-
ing Bard College at Simon Rock,
located in Great Barrington,
Mass., beginning this fall.
All of our 400 students come to
us after 10th or 11th grade in high
school. We give them a broad-
minded, paradigm-shifting educa-
tion; faculty trained in the coun-
trys best universities; inspired
and inspiring classes; first-class
facilities for the sciences, the arts,
and athletics; and an astonishing
range of opportunities for con-
ducting specialized research and
gaining hands-on experience,
Bard Colleges website states.
Igo took the PSATs and began
receiving numerous emails from
various colleges, including Bard.
The college caught her eye and
sparked a process moving her
from a high school student to a
college student.
I was getting a lot of emails
about general college info, one of

College visit
sealed the deal
them was for Bard College saying
I could start this fall, Shannon
said.
The process was quick for Igo,
filling out the application and
submitting it within a weeks
time and all before Christmas, for
her to attend this fall and receive
a scholarship.
The application, I thought,
was different than [my other
kids] applications. They asked
you to send a letter to a newspa-
per about what youre passionate
about or solve a mathematic puz-
zle, said Holly Igo, Shannons
mother.
Shannon will be surrounded by
peers her age at the college, some
of whom she has become ac-
quainted with using a popular so-
cial network.
I dont know anyone personal-
ly, but theres a Facebook group
for people going to the college to
introduce themselves, Shannon
said.
The college visit in the spring
sealed the deal for Shannon and
her family.
The one professor we met in
April was publishing a book and
was using the students to help
him. One was a research assis-
tant, they were all a part of it,
Holly said.
Our professors dont just
teach; they advise, collaborate

The teaching style wasnt just
comforting to Holly, but also the
number of professors per stu-
dent, and upon learning of the at-
tention Shannon would be receiv-
ing, Holly knew what the college
was offering was invaluable.
The students sit in discussion
groups and learn by discussion,
not by listening and taking notes.
They do that at Shawnee, they
just sit and listen. At the college
its around nine to 10 to a class-
room. At Shawnee its 32, Holly
said.
The surrounding area and
campus is full of rolling hills pep-
pered with trees.
It looks like Chatsworth with
mountains, Holly said.

said. The campus is spread out.

Igos other two children are at-

Its hard on me because shes

they were describing the college, I

I knew its what she needs. We
want her to go, we dont want to

the upcoming academic year.
At The Sun, were all about commu-
nity news, which, of course, includes
covering the local school districts.
Well be at as many school board meet-
ings as possible and do our best to stay
on top of the hard news taxes,
budgets, elections and the like.
But we want to be able to bring our
readers so much more. To do that, we
need your help.
When students achieve in the class-
room, in the arts, in sports, etc., we
want to hear about it, so that we can
share that news with the entire com-
munity.
Making the honor roll to winning a
spelling bee, excelling in an extra-cur-
ricular activity, its all news to us.
Problem is, we dont always hear
about these accomplishments. Thats
where you come in.
If youre a parent, and your child
does something special, shoot us an
email. Include a photo, if possible.
If youre a teacher or principal, and
you have a special event coming up or
there is other news that your home-
town should know about, tell us about
it. If possible, well have a reporter
present to cover the event or write a
story and take photos. If not, well fig-
ure out a way to get your news into the
paper, one way or another.
Too often, the news is driven by
events that anger or sadden people.
Too often, the good work of young peo-
ple is ignored or, at the least, certainly
not celebrated the way it should be.
And there are a lot of young people
doing good these days.
We want to change that. We want to
let everyone in town know when
theres something positive going on,
when young people go beyond the ordi-
nary to help someone or have an out-
standing accomplishment.
Call, email or write. Just let us know
whats happening in your school so
that we can share it.

Romneys pick of Paul Ryan
makes reader a proud American
As a Republican I could not be more
pleased with Mitt Romney's pick of Paul
Ryan as vice president, and as an Ameri-
can I could not be more proud.
Paul Ryan is by far the most able vice
presidential pick from either party in gen-
erations. Everyone in congress agrees that
Paul Ryan is a dedicated family man,
smart, friendly, likable, a government poli-
cy expert with the remarkable ability to
translate complex issues into more easily
understood choices for voters to make, all
while being humble and earnest.
I would also call him honestly bi-parti-
san in that he represents a congressional
district that has consistently voted for De-
mocrat presidential candidates while send-
ing the Republican Paul Ryan to Congress
with 60 percent plus margins, hardly the
mark of an ideological radical.
Now reflexively, the Democrat operatives
have tried to paint him as a radical parti-
san ideologue that was going to throw
granny off the cliff. But nothing is further
from the truth.
It's ironic that Romney and Ryan are the
reasonable ones who are trying to salvage a
bi-partisan, rational and gradual return to
previous spending and taxing levels.
For example, Romney and Ryan are ad-
vancing Bill Clinton's Medicare premium
support idea for reforming Medicare for
younger workers while leaving things un-
changed for current retirees and workers
older than 55. Its Obama and the Democ-
rats who already voted to strip $716 billion
out of Medicare and thus are changing
Medicare as we know it.
Romney and Ryan have promised Amer-
ica to face all our problems squarely and
honestly, not just being present to kick the
can down the road for someone else to
solve. If Romney and Ryan win this elec-
tion, it will be because they have asked
America to back their plans and America
agrees with their leadership. Nothing is
going to be easy but at least we will have
leadership from the front and in the right
direction.

Schools prepare for new year
By SHANNON CAULFIELD
The Medford Sun
As the summer comes to a
close, schools are preparing to
once again open their doors to
students.
Medford School District
Parents can expect changes to
the schools curriculum begin-
ning this fall for grades ranging
from kindergarten to fifth
grade.
The curriculum department
facilitated a number of curricu-
lum revision and realignment
projects to various content areas.
Various grade level teams of
teachers worked diligently to re-
vise and realign curriculum doc-
uments to meet the new Common
Core Standards, said the admin-
istration via email.
Kindergarten through sixth
grade language arts literacy has
developed new documents as a
teaching tool as a joint effort with
other teachers in the area.
In an effort to meet their
goals, groups of teachers from the
Maple Shade School District
worked collaboratively with Med-
ford teachers to create new read-
ing documents to meet the expec-
tations of the new Common Core
for Reading, the administrators
said.
The Impact, Gifted and Talent-
ed program for grades third
through fifth, received revision
and writing of additional units of
study, as well.
Additionally, health education
for grades kindergarten through
fifth grade, middle school 21st
Century Life and Careers
Financial Literacy for grades
kindergarten through eighth
grade, the curriculum for
algebra I for eighth grade, social
studies for grades for fifth
through eighth grade and tech-
nology for grades kindergarten
through eighth grade have all
been
revised to meet New Jersey Core
Curriculum Content Standards,
according to the administration.
The curriculum for students
was not the only upgrade for the
district; the classroom equipment
is now up to date.
This summer the district em-
barked on a major technology up-
grade which will impact our in-
structional program.
All classroom computers were
either replaced with a refur-
bished Dell computer with up-
grades to operating systems Win-
dows 7 and Office 2007.
Approximately 558 computers
were replaced and upgraded in
classrooms, tech labs and media
centers.
The district bandwidth was
also increased from three to 10
megabytes at each location.
Additionally, several
Promethean Boards to support
teacher instruction have been
added to each building as well as
upgrading current wireless ac-
cess points to increase accessibili-
ty and mobility. This will also as-
sist the district in getting ready
for BYOD, or, Bring Your Own De-
vice by Staff and Students to
schools in the future, the admin-
istrators said.
The school is anticipating sav-
ings, as well, a total of $300,000
through the districts solar proj-
ect. Furthermore, the district has
plans on gaining revenue through
advertising.
MTPS is involved in a dis-
tinct-wide advertisement cam-
paign to generate sustainable rev-
enue for the future, as we have
done with the district-wide Solar
Project. The district has contract-
ed an advertising firm Advan-
tage3 to assess the districts ad-
vertising assets and to provide ap-
propriate advertising as per state
regulations and district policies
and regulations. Additionally, the
district will be pursuing funds,
which will be available to pro-
mote energy efficient lighting up-
grades in public schools. The
New Jerseys Board of Public
Utilities Schools Lighting Initia-
tive will provide incentives cover-
ing 100 percent of total energy ef-
ficiency project costs. The light-
ing in each school will be evaluat-
ed during the fall to determine its
eligibility, the administration
said.
Overall, we are truly excited
about beginning the 2012-2013
school year, the administration
said.
Lenape Regional High School
District
Shawnee High School received
physical changes in addition to
curricular changes.
The bleachers were renovated,
and the cafeteria lighting was re-
placed, equipping it with energy
efficient lighting.
Other cafeteria modifications
will be seen on the lunch trays.
My Plate standards for students
will continue to meet the stan-
dards.
We comply with all federal
and state standards, we are al-
ways expanding healthy food op-
tions. We are implementing the
USDA My Plate five components
for each lunch, said superintend-
ent of schools, Dr. Carol Birn-
bohm.
The requirements include age-
appropriate calorie minimums
and maximums, larger servings
of vegetables and fruits, a wider
variety of vegetables, including
dark green and red or orange veg-
etables and legumes. The plan
also includes fat-free or 1 percent
milk, at least 51 percent whole
grains, protein servings at a max-
imum of 2.4 ounces, a maximum
of 10 percent saturated fat and
less sodium.
Students can look forward to
the return of the One Book, One
School, with the reading of The
Maze Runner, by James Dashner,
which can be purchased online.
The No Place for Hate program,
an initiative created for activities
to support all students and allow
everyone to feel appreciated; will
be in effect according to Birn-
bohm. The fall will also kick-off
with new posters highlighting
student leaders as upstanders
and not bystanders when wit-
nessing inappropriate or deroga-
tory comments in support of the
LRHSD Step Up and ID HIB pro-
gram.
The bullying policy was devel-
oped to align with the Anti-Bully-
ing Bill of Rights of New Jersey.
The investigation procedure is
meticulously outlined on pages
nine, 10, and 11 of the policy. In
addition to the policy we have a

for two pieces of heavy equip-
ment with crew. $150 per hour,
two crews equal $300 per hour.
While not clear, its not fraud!
On slide 12, the vendors in-
voice was for $450 per hour for
three heavy pieces of equipment
with crew: $150 per hour. Three
crews equal $450 per hour.
On slide 13, the vendors in-
voice was for $300 per hour for
two heavy pieces of equipment
with crew: $150 per hour. Two
crews equal $300 per hour.
On slide 15, the vendors in-
voice was for $450 per hour for
three heavy pieces of equipment
with crew: $150 per hour. 3 crews
equal $450 per hour for the first
action.
The vendors invoice was for
$300 per hour for two heavy
pieces of equipment with crew:
$150 per hour, two crews equal
$300 per hour for the second ac-
tion.
On slide 16, the vendors in-
voice was for $450 per hour for
three heavy pieces of equipment
with crew: $150 per hour, three
crews equal $450 per hour.
On side 16, the vendors in-
voice was for $150 per hour plus
additional labor that was billed at
a lower rate.
On slides 18 and 21, it is not
clear what is included in the
engineers estimate. Without that
level of detail, you cannot
compare the engineers estimates
to the actuals of the
vendor.
On slides 32 and 33, there is a
blanket comment on inappropri-
ate pricing? How can you make
that statement without under-
standing the job, schedule, and
the work performed?
On slide 34, when the task
force cuts off the title of a chart,
at that point, the chart becomes
meaningless information.
Sorry.
On slide 35, its not clear what
smoking gun is here? A ton of
DGA is a about 0.6 CY, thus for
7,475 tons of DGA would require
220 loads giving a 20 CY truck. So
what is the issue with the num-
bers?
On slides 38 to 41, must clearly
shows waste; except when you
consider the town council signed
a lease-to-own agreement. As
with any fiduciary agreement,
you need consider the cost of
money that is to say the
interest. Just like your charge
card, car loan, home loan, etc.
people dont give you money for
free.
While it would have been nice
to expose the improprieties of the
past to help validate the future, I
am sorry to say, the information
provide by the task force does not
support that conclusion.
If anything, the inability to
read and interpret the presented
material in a meaningful context
does call in question the ability
of the town council to effectively
manage the business of
Medford.
In any case, it does behoove the
township and every citizen
for the town council to increase
the transparency of past,
present and future business activ-
ities.
It should be noted that I have
never been part of or associated
with Medford Town Council nor
with any of its contractors. I am
simply an engineer with a major
aerospace company.
As part of my position, I often
manage various vendors per sup-
pliers and maintain technical and
financial responsibility over
them.

number of initiatives to fulfill our
school district mission encourag-
ing an appreciation for diversity
and individual differences creat-
ing a school climate conducive to
all students, Birnbohm said.
The 21st Century Learner Pilot
will be implemented with iPads
featured in the classroom.
Various teachers were trained
over the summer on how to incor-
porate the iPads as they develop
21st Century learning skills,
Birnbohm said.
Additional changes to the cur-
riculum are currently being
worked on, and are ready for the
upcoming school year.
We are in year 2 of a 7-year
curriculum revision cycle to de-
velop all curriculums using the
Understanding by Design model.
In 2011, we wrote and received
Board of Education approval for
24 different courses. This fall, we
will be implementing those new
curriculums for algebra I, geome-
try, biology, U.S. history I, and
first year world languages, to
name a few, Birnbohm said.
Giving back to the community
is important, as well, with numer-
ous projects being implement
throughout the district.
The school district is highly
involved in volunteerism and
community service. Over the past
two years, each high school coor-
dinated a Senior Day of Service
where senior students are dis-
patched to over 90 different loca-
tions across the eight communi-
ties, performing some type of
community service for that day,
Birnbohm said. In addition, we
collaborated with Goodwill Indus-
tries of Southern New Jersey
conducting a clothing drive com-
petition that accumulated over
25,000 pounds of donations and
look forward to participating
with Goodwill again.
There are plans to continue to
focus on programs already in mo-
tion in the school.
Defy the Issue, a drug and al-
cohol free campaign, continues to
be the focus of student-to-student
presentations both within our
schools and with the middle
schools in the eight townships
which we serve. Life Squad at
Shawnee did a big community
presentation already and will
maintain the program with
smaller group student presenta-
tions, Birnbohm said.
The first day of classes for all
students is Sept. 5.
