Providing healthy lunches for kids Choosing a day care provider Tips on how to deal with bullying

Creating nutritious lunches that kids will eat is notoriously a challenge. Whether a packed lunch or a school-provided lunch, both parents and schools want to do the best they can for their kids. Schools have a lot of changes to carry out with the unveiling in January of the new USDA requirements for school meals, part of the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act advocated by First Lady Michelle Obama. Rene Yamashiro, food
service director for the Roseville City School District, said there are many differences that go into effect with the 2012-13 school year. Previously, a child could refuse the daily vegetable or fruit offering, so that a school with 300 students might actually use much less than 300 servings. Under new requirements, all 300 students will be given the portion, even though some children do not want it and will not eat it. Additional salad bar will continue to be provided as it has been in the past. Cost will be a difficulty, Yamashiro said, as well as waste. The federal government is increasing our

reimbursement 6 cents for each of those lunches, Yamashiro said. Even though when they wrote these regulations, they did estimate that it was probably going to be maybe a 30 cent increase. Maximums amounts are set for some foods: 2 ounces of meat or meat alternate per day, two grain servings per day, and calories are limited based on age. Fewer choices will be the result, Yamashiro said. For example, an entre containing ciabatta bread or steak roll now cant be offered because it will exceed the daily allowance for grains. While childhood obesity is a problem, not every child is obese. What theyve done is taken this and tried to apply it to 100 percent of the kids when really it needs to be addressed to about 30 percent of the kids, Yamashiro said. Yamashiro, whose department is responsible for kindergarten through eighth-grade food programs in 28 schools, said that school food service is equal to the task. School lunch is a great deal, she said. My mission is to get more kids eating school lunch. We know its healthy, we offer a variety of fruits and vegetables every day, we even get some from our local

farmers for our salad bars. Parents who pack a lunch also have difficulties. Margaret Scheller, clinical dietitian at Sutter Roseville Medical Center, said that when her children were younger she would sometimes do yard duty at their school. She noticed how a lot of packed lunches got thrown away. A lot of kids open up their lunchbox and its always a surprise, every day, Scheller said. Or its not its the same old thing. Parents can educate their children, involve them in choosing lunch items, and teach by example. If they expect their kids to eat a certain way, they need to eat a certain way, Scheller said. She suggests parents bring their kids to the grocery store and let them pick some foods. My daughter never really liked sandwiches, so we had to think outside the box, Scheller said. Among their choices were small whole wheat tortillas wrapped around lean meats with shredded veggies, leftovers, salads, nuts, dried fruit and string cheese.

continued from page 3 Dr. Anita M. Larrow, ND, of Revolutions Natural Medicine, has a practical take on school lunches that she shares on the groups website. Eating healthy does not mean you have to give up desserts, Larrow said. Ok, maybe some desserts, but there are options for healthy desserts. Organic graham crackers, fruit strips, granola bars (just watch the sugar content), or a piece of dark chocolate are some options. Fresh fruit with yogurt on top, and applesauce with cinnamon are some more great options. For drinks, she said, water is the best
option. Try adding lemons or limes or even a small amount of 100 percent fruit juice, Larrow said. These options will give water a flavor which makes it easier to drink larger quantities.

There are several options when it comes to preschool or day care choices for your children. Cost, environment, curriculum and staffing all play a role in the placement decision. Some things parents should look for when selecting a preschool include the education and training of the teachers, the curriculum the program uses to guide learning and the ways in which the program welcomes and involves families, said Placer County Superintendent of Schools Gayle Garbolino Mojica. High quality preschools help prepare children for school success by focusing on pre-acade-
mic skills like reading, math and science, as well as developing social skills such as cooperating, making friends and working as a team. The First 5 California website stresses the importance of preschool and the need to ensure there is time for play, not just school work. Its important to choose a preschool that encourages children to learn, explore and interact both with teachers and each other, the site states. When choosing a preschool, look for one that will help your child learn at his or her own pace. The Placer County Office of Education also has resources for those looking for preschools in the area. Some elementary schools offer a pre-K program and several churches in the area also

Afterschool rates start at $14. Lynch likes to have her children not only focus on curriculum, but play as well. We are in a rural environment its like a home. We have a couple of acres where the kids can explore and learn through play, she said. It is totally different than
some of the public preschools. Craft projects, snacks, circle time and field trips are a big part of what Lynch provides. Its a safe and fun place, she said. We strive to provide a home away from home for our kids. Lolli Totts Family Preschool and Child Care has the capacity to care for 14 children in an in-home environment. Nichole Rhoot, owner of Lolli Totts, said parents should look for an opendoor policy when

considering child care placement. I personally believe the schools should have an open door policy and be able look in on their child anytime, Rhoot said. Having good communication with the care provider is essential. Her preschool, with a staff of three, keeps things simple and strives to build close bonds with the children. This is an extension of the family, Rhoot said. We are able to communicate with the parents and provide the same type of care they provide. We run a structured program with individualized care and keep the needs of the kids in mind. Rhoots rates start at $30 a day for children ages 2 and up, $40 for an infant. After school care starts at $15 a day. The best advice from Rhoot and Lynch is to shop around and to find the best fit for your child and your budget.

To someone not acquainted with the world of professional sports, Gorin Tennis Academy may seem a little intense. Founder Vitaly Gorin is an intensely dedicated coach. He grew up with tennis and studied under Harry Hopman in Florida as a junior. Gorin started his business in 1995, when he sponsored then 12-yearold Dmitry Tursunov who came over from Russia. Tursunov has made it into the top 20 in the world, and played in the Beijing and London Olympics. As a group, the academy
began in the Bay Area, moved to the Napa Valley Country Club, and came to Granite Bay in 2000. I would say in the last year to two years, weve gotten quite well known, Gorin said. Up to that point, in the first 10 years, I would say we were the best kept secret Here we had all these top national and international juniors, we had some phenomenal pros go through our club, even American top pros, and nobody ever knew about us. The campus takes boarding and non-boarding students, has seven tennis courts, a heated pool, spa and sauna, and a student/coach ratio of 4to-1 maximum. Compared with other

The academy takes players at all levels and ages, from beginner onward. Were geared to take care of the professionals, but we definitely have a

According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, bullying is when one child picks on another child repeatedly. Usually children being bullied are weaker or smaller, shy and generally feel help-
less. Bullying can be physical, verbal, or social. It can happen at school, on the playground, on the school bus, in the neighborhood, or over the Internet. In recent years, bullying has been a hot topic and the subject of several high
profile news stories ranging from long-lasting effects on students to suicide. Bullying can happen anywhere, and although you think you may know your child, sometimes the signs are there, but may be hard to recognize.
If you think your child is being bullied, is the bully or is a witness to someone being bullied, placer parent.com offers these tips for you.
how to respond by teaching your child how to: 1. Look the bully in the eye. 2. Stand tall and stay calm in a difficult situation. 3. Walk away.

Serenity, being the first key word here, can be hard to achieve when we are in pain and distress. We must find a way to quiet our minds and to be calm if we want to think
clearly. Prayer and meditation are two ways that can help with this process. Acceptance, the next key word, truly is the first and foremost important item we can achieve in life, especially, when we want to heal from grief.

We can only change ourselves. We can change our basic beliefs, attitudes, actions, reactions, habits, situation and even our emotions. Our emotions are based upon many aspects, including our life experiences and beliefs. Our beliefs come from everything we see, hear, learn and experience from the time we were born. Many beliefs are based on family culture, experiences and traditions. However, as adults, we have the ability to
question those traditions, explore new ways, choose new traditions and change the way we view matters.
The wisdom to know the difference.
This is the ability to be truthful enough with ourselves to see the difference. When we believe one way all of our lives, changing everything we ever thought and believed is not easy but it is not impossible. We tend to
not change until it becomes too painful to remain the same. Therefore, pain is an excellent motivator and catalyst for change. When we begin to look at ourselves and our belief systems, the task to begin change may seem overwhelming but it is never more than you can handle. You can achieve anything with serenity, courage and wisdom. If you are going through a challenging time in your life, call the Lighthouse at (916) 645-3300.
