Quadratic Formula

Quadratic Formula In mathematics, a quadratic equation is a univariate polynomial equation of the second degree. A general quadratic equation can be written in the form where x represents a variable or an unknown, and a, b, and c are constants with a 0. (If a = 0, the equation is a linear equation.) The constants a, b, and c are called respectively, the quadratic coefficient, the linear coefficient and the constant term or free term. The term "quadratic" comes from quadratus, which is the Latin word for "square". Quadratic equations can be solved by factoring, completing the square, graphing, Newton's method, and using the quadratic formula. An equation whose highest degree is equals to 2 is known as Quadratic Equation. In other words an equation whose highest power is a Square is said to be quadratic equation. Quadratic equation can be written as: ax2 + bx + c = 0 and Quadratic Formula is given by:

x = - b + (b2 4ac) / 2a, its alternate form also given by: x = 2c / -b + (b2 4ac). Now we will see how to find factors of quadratic equation using Quadratic Formula. To find factors we need to follow some steps: Step 1: To find factor first we take a quadratic equation. Let quadratic equation is 5p2 p + 4 = 0. Step 2: Use above formula to find factors of expression. We know that quadratic formula is given by: x = - b + (b2 4ac) / 2a. In equation the value of a is 5, value of b is -1 and value of c is 4. Step 3: Put these values in formula. On putting these values we get: x = - b + (b2 4ac) / 2a, x = - (-1) + ((-1)2 4 * 5 * 4) / 2 (5); x = -1 + (-1 80) / 10; x = -1 + 81 / 10; so here we will get two factors of given equation. X = -1 + 81 / 10 and X = -1 - 81 / 10. This is how we find factors of quadratic equation using quadratic formula.

Example: If 5 is one zero of the quadratic polynomial x^2 minus kx minus 15 then value of k is? Given polynomial equation is x2 k x 15. This equation can be written in the form of a function as: f (x) = x2 kx 15, In this problem, it is given to us that one zero exist at value of 'x' equals to 5. To prove this, substitute x = 5. This can be derived as: f (5) = 52 5k 15 = 0, 25 5k 15 = 0, 10 5 k = 0, 5 k = 10 and hence k = 2. Hence, if 5 is one zero of quadratic polynomial x2 minus kx minus 15 then value of k is 2.
