Welcome (or welcome back) to the Calhoun Honors College! The semester got off to a great start last week with our Fall Honors Blitz, and continues with another exciting event on Wednesday of this week--Honors Networking Night. The idea for Networking Night (like many of our ideas) came from you--in this case, from our Student Advisory Board. The Board suggested that we provide an opportunity for students to get to know other students, as well as faculty, from their major departments and colleges. For freshmen, it will be a chance to meet, and get advice from, upperclassmen. For sophomores, juniors, and seniors, it's a chance to share your experience and expertise with new majors. And everyone will have a chance to meet faculty and staff from across the university. Hope to see all of you at 5:30pm on Wednesday, August 29 in the McKissick Theater, in the Hendrix Center!

National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship Workshops - If you are a senior and are planning to go to graduate school in fall 2013 in the sciences, engineering, mathematics, or some of the social sciences, you should apply for a National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship (NSF GRF). As the oldest graduate fellowship of its kind, the NSF GRF has a long history of selecting recipients who achieve high levels of success in their future academic and professional careers. The reputation of the NSF GRF follows recipients and often helps them become life-long leaders that contribute significantly to both scientific innovation and teaching. Past fellows include numerous Nobel Prize winners, U.S. Secretary of Energy, Steven Chu, Google founder, Sergey Brin and Freakonomics co-author, Steven Levitt. Fellows share in the prestige and opportunities that become available when they are selected. Fellows benefit from a three-year annual stipend of $30,000 along with a $10,500 cost of education allowance for tuition and fees, a onetime $1,000 international travel allowance and the freedom to conduct their own research at any accredited U.S. institution of graduate education they choose. We will be holding a series of workshops to better acquaint you with the NSFGRFP and help you prepare a competitive application. The workshops will be held in 200 Holtzendorff, from 7-8:30pm on the following Tuesdays: September 11, September 18, October 2, and October 23. We hope to see you there!
