Convince me of your yes/no answer graphically and algebraically!

Challenge #3 - Systems of 3 equations

Part 1: Create a system of three equations that has one solution. Convince me that it has one solution algebraically and graphically. Part 2: Create a system of three equations that has three solutions. Show it graphically.

Graphing #1
Do you like to graph by using slope-intercept form, making a table or using intercepts? You can use the same method on every problem, or different methods on different problems. Do ONE of these steps for each problem, then graph. If you use slope-intercept form, you must get y alone first. If you are going to make a table, you must get y alone first. If you are using intercepts you will need to put 0 in for x and solve, then 0 in for y and solve.

Substitution #1
When you use substitution, you must get one variable alone first. In the examples below, get one variable alone, then highlight what you are going to put in and where it goes.

Special Systems #1
After you solve a system you will have either one solution, infinite solutions, or no solutions. Fill in the blanks: If your solution has a variable there is/are _________________________. If the solution has two numbers that are equal there is/are ____________________________. If the solution has two numbers that are NOT equal there is/are ____________________________. Give the solution if this is what you get at the end of each problem: 1. 3x + 6 = 3x - 3 2. 2x = 4 3. 10x - 5 = 10x - 5 4. -6x = 0

Story Problems #1
Story problems follow a few different formats. Write the system of equations for each, but do not try to solve them. They are not solveable: 3 cokes and popcorn cost $24. 5 cokes and 3 popcorns cost $48. Three CDs plus shipping costs $42. Five CDs plus shipping costs $66. (Who still buys CDs?) The Key Club buys 12 pizzas. A cheese pizza costs $10 and sausage costs $15. They spent $140.

Story Problems #2
Five friends rent bikes to go on a bike trip on the Red Cedar Trail on Saturday, April 20th. The temperature is a beautiful 65 degrees and sunny with a slight breeze from the southwest. The five friends see lots of cool bikes to rent. There are 4 green ones, 8 blue ones, 5 black ones and 2 purple bikes to choose from. Mountain bikes cost $20 to rent and hybrid bikes cost $15 to rent. They spend a total of $90 on their bike rental. Then they set off on their way. Biking into the wind on the flat path takes 5 hours to travel 30 miles. After traveling 30 miles they are tired and ready for lunch. Ben (with a blue bike) gets a hot dog and a Coke for a total of $3.75. Rob, who is ravenous, gets four hot dog and a Coke for $11.25. Finally, they decide to head back to the bike rental shop to return the bikes. The return trip (with the wind) takes 3 hours. Even though they were tired when they got back (and Rob felt a little sick) they decided to go make a plan to bike at least 50 miles the next time they go biking. How fast was the wind blowing? How fast where the bikers riding? How many mountain bikes did they rent? How many hybrid bikes did they rent? How much is a hot dog?

How much is a Coke?

Story Problems #3
There are 12 coins inside with a value of $0.32. There are only pennies and nickels. How many of each?

There are 6 coins inside with a value of $0.45. There are only nickels and dimes. How many of each?
