Hirakund Project- It has been built on the river Mahanadi in Orissa. Damodar Valley Project-This project is the joint venture of West Bengal and Jharkhand. It is on the river Damodar. Bhakhra Nangal Project-This project is the joint venture of Punjab, Haryana and Rajasthan. It has been built on the river Satluj. Sardar Sarovar Dam-It is built on the river Narmada in Gujarat. Nagarjunsagar Project-This project has been constructed on the river Krishna in Andhra Pradesh.

MAIN OBJECTIVE OF MULTIPURPOSE RIVER VALLEY PROJECT

Several Projects have been undertaken in India to utilize the water of rivers efficiently. These projects involve the construction of dams, reservoirs and canals and serve a number of purposes simultaneously. Their main objective is the overall development and thus they are known as multi-purpose river valley projects. The main purpose of these projects are to provide facilities of irrigation, flood control and production of hydroelectricity.

Hirakud dam is built across the Mahanadi river about 15 km from Sambalpur in the state of Orissa in India. Its construction began in 1948 and opening at 1957. The dam is one of the world's longest Earthen Dam. Behind the dam extends a lake, Hirakud Reservoir, 55 km long. Hirakud Dam is the longest man-made dam in the world, about 16 mi (26 km) in length. It is one of the first major multipurpose river valley project started after India's independence. The name of the dam is mostly mis-pronounced in North India as Hirakund which is actually Hirakud.

DVC, a legacy to the people of India, emerged as a culmination of attempts made over a whole century to control the wild and erratic Damodar river. The river spans over an area of 25,000 km2 covering the states of Bihar (now Jharkhand) & West Bengal. The project constructed dams and thermal power stations which help in controlling flood and providing electricity respectively. Damodar Valley Project is the first multipurpose river valley project of independent India. This project benefits two states that are Bihar and West Bengal. It is 692 metres long and 11.6 metres high barrage that was constructed across Damodar River. This project is handled by Damodar Valley Corporation.

Bhakra-Nangal Project is a joint venture by the states of Punjab, Rajasthan and Haryana. This project is considered as the major multi-purpose project in India. The Bhakra-Nangal Project was started in the year 1948 and it was completed in 1968. The name of this project came from the two dams Bhakra and Sutlej River, Nangal Dam is at a distance of about 13 kilometres to the downstream of Bhakra Dam and is of a height of 95 feet. This project also generates one million kilowatt of hydroelectricity.
