GUIDELINES FOR PREPRARATION OF SEMINAR PAPER


The seminar paper shall be prepared on the topics approved by the respective staff member as per the guidelines given below: The seminar paper consists of an independent analysis undertaken by each student on any relevant civil engineering topic/issue. The topic and its content could be related to the advances in the research, industrial practices, new design or construction methods, environmental analysis or solutions etc. Students shall collect relevant literature, with proper references and prepare a brief report in a specified format.

General guidelines: Total size of the paper shall be about 1000 to 1200 words. No part of the manuscript shall be directly reproduced from any published matter. The pages should be numbered sequentially at the bottom central position starting with the abstract page and through the text, till the last page. Tables and figures shall be numbered sequentially (Table 1 and Fig. 1 etc.) and placed along with the captions. Table title shall be placed above the table content and figure caption below it. All symbols and abbreviations should be properly defined. Acknowledgement shall be presented towards the end of the report. Specific guidelines: The seminar report shall include following sections for presenting the information.

1. Introduction. (Times new roman, 12, bold) (300 to 350 words; Font: Times new roman, 12; single spaced) A brief introduction on the topic to be given here which shall also include a detailed review of the literature collected in support of this topic. All the literature collected should be critically examined in the context of the objective of the seminar paper. The articles may be collected from journals, conference proceedings, magazines or text books. The content shall also be presented under different subheadings, which shall be suitably decided for the clarity of explanations in support of the objectives. These sub sections shall be appropriately numbered as 1.1, 1.2 1.3 etc. 2. Sub heading for further explanations. (Times new roman, 12, bold) (600 to 650 words; Font: Times new roman, 12; single spaced) The seminar paper shall be divided into suitable sub sections for better clarity. The sections could be divided based methodology, design steps etc. The content shall also be presented under different sub-headings, which shall be suitably decided for the clarity of explanations in support of the objectives. These sub sections shall be appropriately numbered as 1.1, 1.2 1.3 etc.

References. (Times new roman, 12, bold) The papers must contain substantial amount of published sources as reference sources. Listing of online sources alone will not be treated as reference materials. The format for listing references is as follows. From Journals/Periodicals/conference proceedings: Author(s), Title, Source, Volume, Number, pages (page to page) For example: John Taylor, Kelly Rove and Prince Holding, Impact of heat waves on regional climate deviations, Journal of climatology, Vol: 12, No: 3, 2004, 230-245.

From books or other similar sources Author(s), Title of book, Publisher, Edition, year, Pages. For example: Andy Fowler, Fundamentals of fire science, Elsevier publishing company, 2nd Edition, 2007, 425 432. The internet sources shall be listed separately. All the items mentioned in the list of references must be referred to in the main text.
