SEPTEMBER 2, 2012 TWENTY-SECOND SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

Dean Martin echoed a basic truth in his signature song, Everybody Loves Somebody. Loves reach extends beyond song and art into religion. Jesus, whose life is our greatest lesson about love, identified love as the path to salvation. Love goes beyond well-wishing to action, the laying down of life. Jesus saved us through giving. He gave us himself. Weve all experienced the joy of giving, the excitement of presenting an unsolicited gift or a particularly generous one. We enjoy witnessing the joy our gift brings. Parents experience this when they give to young children. We all experience it when we give to a friend, a neighbor, a charity, a stranger. However, the warm feeling that accompanies giving is the least important part of the experience. The truth is we need to give because we grow by giving. The world would have us believe that we grow by getting: the more I have, the more I am. In this view, persons are defined by things. Personal possessions count more than personal qualities, like character and virtue. But a fast car or a flashy cellphone is a poor means of selfexpression. In order to express ourselves, we need to share our uniqueness with others, to create and to give. Giving allows us to grow socially. We need relationships and relationships are enriched by giving. Giving helps us to understand the true purpose of our possessions. We should own things in order to increase our ability to serve others. Do our possessions also extend our ability to love? If they are shared with others, they can. We sometimes hold back our giving because of fear. If I volunteer my time and donate my money, will I have enough left for me? Am I willing to risk sacrifice? Giving and sacrifice strengthen relationships. And when we give, we strengthen the community. As St. Paul says, Love never fails (1 Corinthians 13:8). We all have a need to give a need to love somebody sometime. Because God loved us first, he has given us abundant life and a unique combination of gifts. Through our baptism, Jesus calls us to join his mission of salvation, and our gifts are tools which contribute to that mission. When we give, we obey the first commandment, we practice the greatest virtue, and we reveal ourselves as Christian stewards. Adapted from an article by Rev. Jon Thomas, Parochial Vicar, Christ Our Light Parish, Cherry Hill, New Jersey.

With Hearts on Fire

Lord Jesus Christ, with hearts on fire we welcome you. You approach us and walk with us. Remove all that restrains us from recognizing you; and whatever stops us from putting aside everything else to follow you. Open the Scriptures to us. Teach us to know you and to see you and to hear you in the assembly of the Baptized, in the ministries of the Church, in the proclamation of the Word, and in the Breaking of the Bread. School us in the ways of the Gospel. Coach us in the ways of Christian Stewardship. Show us how to use wisely the blessings given to us. Show us how to take good care of those whose happiness and well-being you have entrusted to us. Bless our lively exchange as we discuss all that has happened, and as we continue to dream of all that might be. Astonish us, when we have little sense and are so slow to believe the prophets. Encourage us, when we are overwhelmed. Strengthen us, when we are so easily frightened. Challenge our complacency and our temptation to quit. Stir the embers that have grown cold. And more than anything else, stay with us, Lord. For the kingdom and the power and the glory are yours, now and forever. Amen. Rev. Tim Piasecki, Diocese of Rockford, Illinois

Christ the King Mission Statement

The People of Christ the King in Lombard are a welcoming, vibrant faith community building the kingdom of God through our many ministries. We celebrate our diversity, seeking to realize the gifts of each member of our parish, as we are all joined together under one faith, in a spiritual journey of evangelization, service to others, and a reverence for all life. In the Eucharist, we find new life, and bring this life to others through stewardship, education, and worship.

Rest in Peace
Our condolences to the family and friends of Richard Herner I thank God today for the gift of my life, And for the lives of my brothers and sisters. I know I am responsible for the unborn who cannot speak for themselves. I know that the most serious tragedy of our day is the tragedy of abortion. Today I commit myself, never to be silent, never to be passive, never to be forgetful of the unborn. I commit myself to be active in the pro-life movement And never to stop defending life Until all my brothers and sisters are protected, And our nation once again becomes A nation with liberty and justice Not just for some, but for all. Amen! Rest in Peace, Richard

STEWARDSHIP OF TIME

A STEWARDSHIP MOMENT
In the reading from the letter of St. James we are urged to be doers of the Gospel, not just listeners. Being a steward of Gods Word is a matter of listening to the Good News, embracing the Good News and putting the Good News into action in our day-to-day lives. And whenever we are uncertain as to what decisions to make or actions to take as good stewards of the Gospel, St. James reminds us: We can never go wrong if we resist popular values that are not compatible with the Gospel, and we come to the aid of those who are burdened, distressed and poor.

KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS TOOTSIE ROLL DRIVE

Each year the Knights of Columbus hold the Tootsie Roll Drive to raise funds for the Developmentally Challenged. This year the Knights will be soliciting for donations after all masses the weekend of Sept.14th and 15th.- Tootsie Roll Banks will be available. The Knights will be on street corners and store fronts in our area the weekend of Sept.14th and 15th along with Sept.21st and 22nd. Please help us raise funds for Registered Charitable Organizations in our area. We thank you in advance for your support. Anyone wishing to volunteer on the weekends please contact Ed Schumann at (630)627-8213. Non-Knights and ladies are most welcome to help. ST.VINCENT DE PAUL FOOD PANTRY NEWS Recently our SVDP food pantry joined with the Jewel Food Store at Roosevelt and Main in a program to supply our clients with food that we previously had to buy from the Northern Illinois Food Bank. In addition to meat products, we also receive produce, dairy items, bakery items and items from the deli. The program enables us to pick up food on Wednesday and Saturday. This is all good food that may be near or on the "sell-by" date. The response from our clients has been very positive and this food gives them something previously not available to them. Our SVDP food pantry currently has 2 chest type freezers that are very near capacity because of food items we receive from other local businesses. In order to take full advantage of the food being offered to us by Jewel we need to increase our available freezer space. We ask that if anyone has a freezer they no longer use to consider donating it to our food pantry. We would make arrangements to pick it up. You would be helping greatly in our mission to do as Jesus commanded; "Feed the Hungry".

Ten Commandments for Eucharistic Reverence

These Ten Commandments are taken from Our Reverence for the Most Holy Eucharist; O Come, Let Us Adore Him by Fr. Charles M. Mangan. Take time this week to work on this one commandment. We will continue to print one commandment each week. For an archive, please view previous bulletins on our website: www.ctklombard.org. V. Receive Holy Communion with joy and fervor. The worthy reception of the Body and Blood of the Lorda foretaste and pledge of Heaven, an impetus for authentic charity towards the poor, weak, defenseless and needy and a nudge towards angellike chastityshould be the highlight of our day, week, month, year . . . life. Having prepared as indicated, we joyfully and fervently advance in awe towards the Altar. We receive Jesus either on our tongue or in the hand. (A profound bow before receiving is most appropriate.) When receiving on the tongue, one says Amen and permits Christ to be placed on it. If receiving in the hand, one makes a throne for the Lord by placing his stronger hand on the bottom and his weaker hand on top. Saying Amen and receiving the Host (instead of reaching for It), the communicant takes one step to the side, stops, and places the Host in his mouth by using the stronger hand from the bottom. The Host is never received on the run. If receiving the Precious Blood from the Chalice (an option in some parishes but not an obligation, since one receives the total JesusBody, Blood, Soul and Divinityeven under one Species alone), then the communicant carefully accepts the Chalice after responding Amen and consumes the Precious Blood. Our diligent reception of Holy Communion signals our love and adoration for Christ. May we always receive the Son of God with dignity and devotion!

Ministry of the Faith Formation Commission WEDNESDAY EVENING BIBLE STUDY SEPTEMBER 5
This long, hot summer is winding down and its a good time to start thinking about fall and the coming season at Christ the King. The Wednesday Evening Bible Study Group will kick off the 2012/2013 season on September 5, in the East Room at 7 oclock. We are a small Christian community of about ten parishioners who meet on the first and third Wednesday evenings to discuss the various books of the Bible. Please bring your Bible (although the Bible is not mandatory) and plan to join us and learn about the Parables and other stories of the Scripture. A Response from a Parishioner to the Eucharistic Bulletin Article I LOVE those commandments of Reverence!!! Recently when Queen Elizabeth was being honored for her jubilee as queen and again at the Olympics, I saw people dressed in their best clothing and curtsying to her and bowing to her husband, the Duke. Now they are important people, but they pale in comparison to God. Even when meeting government dignitaries when I was working, we shook hands out of respect and if we knew of their coming ahead of time, we tried to dress in our finest clothes. Plus there was a specific dress code for work. So I think it's only right to do the same for God when we come to church. God certainly deserves our highest respect, after all, he created us. The other thing is that people don't respond "Amen" to the EM's words "Body of Christ; Blood of Christ". When anyone gives a gift we say thank you to the person. Amen is even a greater thank you. This Eucharistic gift is from God and will lead us to heaven; it's a far far greater gift and yet so many don't say anything. I hope this will be mentioned in coming weeks as one of the commandments. It is nice to know that our parishioners are reading the articles in our bulletin and for their concern on how we show our reverence to the Eucharist. We all can try and do our best for the Lord, right? Fr. Jarosz

National Pro-Life Chalk Day Is September 6th

A nationwide pro-life event that's taking place next month. On Thursday, September 6th, Rock for Life and Students for Life of America are inviting prolife students everywhere to take part in a very simple, yet very impactful event: National Pro-Life Chalk Day. The idea is simple: 1. Pick up some sidewalk chalk 2. Find an area that has a lot of foot traffic 3. Use your chalk to write pro-life messages If you chalk pro-life messages all around your school campus -- or anywhere else -- you're sure to get a lot of discussions started about abortion! You can find some suggestions for chalkable pro-life messages and other tips on the National Pro-Life Chalk Day website. For more information or you wish to do this life project at home contact Fr. Jarosz frpeter@ctklombard.org

Leadership Meeting
The first Parish Leadership meeting of the year will be held on Tuesday, September 4 in the Early Learning Academy at 7:00 p.m. All parish leaders of commissions, ministries and organizations within the parish are invited to attend. At this meeting we will organize for the coming year and set goals within each commission. Leadership meetings are open to anyone in the parish and those who wish to become more involved are encouraged to attend to learn more about the many activities and ministries of our parish. Stop by the Pastoral Parish Council table this weekend during Hospitality to see all that we do. For more information please contact Anna Weselak (630-889-0626; parishcouncil@ctklombard.org) or Deacon Frank Lillig ( 630-396-6077; frank@ctklombard.org). Thank you, Anna Weselak

Pastors Reflections +As I worked in my office this Friday night, I see as I have noticed for my past ten years at CTK, the Holy Trinity, Our Lady of Fatima Prayer community. Every week they spend a couple hours in praying, singing, sharing, studying Scripture and hospitality. Monti, my dog and I enjoy listening to the praise and song of the community each week, in the rectory. Monti loves this night because of the smell of good food. I pray that our prayer community continue for the years ahead---praying for the parish, the world and Church Universal. +Every Tuesday at 5pm the same small group of parishioners pray the rosary in Church. I feel bad because our community does not use this time of prayer more. This group of three parishioners faithfully come each week to pray for us-the whole parish. As we soon begin September, hopefully families and children will join them. Is the time too early? Should it be after work or before supper? Our Lady will continue to invite us to enter into the holy mysteries of Her Son Jesus. +Did you know before the Bible study group on Wednesdays or the Sunday Scripture group begins on Thursdays, they both begin their session with breaking open the Word of God. This is proclaiming the scripture, sharing reflections and then how will they live out the Word of God, in their lives. These two communities are anxiously preparing to begin, the Holy Fathers Year of Faith in October. Long Live, Pope Benedict! + How has prayer and reflection changed your life? Have we invited our children and grandchildren to pray lately? God is always please with our efforts. Peace and all good things to you! Fr. Jarosz

Back to School...
Its that time of year again. This year it seems to be happening sooner than usual, but it is time to say farewell to our college bound parishioners, and time to begin our new school year. As our children set out to grow in knowledge and wisdom, we ask God to bless them and send the Spirit upon them to guide them through the excitement and awkwardness, of the new school year. We hope that Christ the King will always be a place they can call home! We will miss you.

We Need YOU!!
