Feature: Renumbering titles

Last year following DC Comics Flashpoint event, 52 titles were introduced with brand new number #1s as part of their New 52 initiative. While some got a soft reboot like Batman and Green Lantern, others got makeovers which made various characters unrecognizable for the current audience. This year Marvel Comics follows the New 52 with Marvel NOW! renumbering all their titles over a span of five months. Renumbering titles are a great way to invite new readers to brand new first issues. They serve as an introduction for new readers without feeling the intimidation of too much history or back story. In 1995 the X-Men franchise presented the Age of Apocalypse story arc where all the X-Men-related titles were briefly renumbered for four months before returning to their original numbering. In 1996 Marvel Comics brought back two of their former top artists Jim Lee and Rob Liefeld for Heroes Reborn. Four titles were renumbered and each of the renumbered titles brought higher sales than before. Much like the variant comics were the craze during the Dark Age of Comics in the 1990s, renumbering books have become an epic phenomenon in the Digital Age of Comics as a way to push sales higher.

marvel comics november solicitations

The entire purpose of Avengers vs. X-Men was to incorporate the X-Men back into the larger Marvel Universe after years of isolation. However the renumbering following DCs New 52 offers diminishing opportunity costs since many of the Marvel titles have been rebooted multiple times over the past 10 years. The Avengers title has 6 number ones since its 1963 debut (1963, 1996, 1998, 2005, 2010, and 2012). Captain America has been rebooted 6 times (1968, 1996, 1998, 2002, 2005, and 2012). Iron Man has 6 number ones as well (1963, 1996, 1998, 2005, 2008, and 2012). Thor has 1996, 1998, 2007, and 2012. Fantastic Four has four volumes between its initial release including FF (1961, 1996, 1998, 2010, and 2012). Many of Marvels reboots have happened in the past 5 years to take advantage of the characters respective movie from Marvel Studios. However unlike their reboots in the past, Marvel NOW! is a company wide change between titles, writers, and artists offering their best approaches to these characters. After taking over the Avengers in 2004, Brian Michael Bendis brought the franchise to its peak culminating with the Avengers film in 2012. Now Bendis is taking over the X-Men and breaking them down to their basic core elements. He has brought back the original X-Men (Cyclops, Jean Grey, Angel, Beast, and Iceman) back to the present Marvel Universe which happens to be their impending future. Jean Grey was killed during writer Grant Morrisons run on New X-Men, Angel is no more after the Dark Angel Saga within Uncanny X-Force, Beast drank a potion turning him into a real Beast, Cyclops may meet his end during the current Avengers vs. X-Men run, and Iceman is the only normal one around. The original X-Men realize they are facing their own Days of Future Past within the current Marvel Universe.

COMIC CRITIQUES Hawkeye #1

Marvel Comics Hawkeye #1 showcased Clint Burtons life outside of the Avengers. Matt Fraction starts off strong however the issue doesnt really reflect his character as it spirals down the path of boredom and dull. The series would have been better if it show Clints heroic life in the Avengers and his criminal life without them. It would have been made for an interesting series as Clint Burton returns to his criminal roots. The writing may not be up to par however the art is fantastic by David Aja. NEEDS IMPROVEMENT 3 OUT OF 5

Green Lantern Annual #1

The first Green Lantern annual following the New 52 ends the Revenge of Black Hand story arc and begins the Rise of the Third Army event. The events within this issue lead directly into Green Lantern #0 where Baz the first Arab American Green Lantern is introduced. The annual cover mimics the 1992s Death of Superman collectible polybag where Superman was killed by Doomsday in Superman #75. Recently, Black Lantern discovered within the Book of the Black that Hal Jordan will become the Greatest Black Lantern indicating his impending death within this issue. The issue introduces the Chamber of Shadows, the Hidden Ones, and the First Lantern which all enhance the Green Lantern mythology. Geoff Johns brings his game to Rise of the Third Army. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED 5 OUT OF 5
