TEACHINGASSISTANT BenjaminDubow,bndubow@gmail.com OBJECTIVES ThiscourseisintendedasahandsonintroductiontovectorGISusingArcView9.3software.VectorGISdataareappropriateformodeling geographicobjects,suchasboundedareas(censustractsorservicedistricts),specificlocations(buildingsoreventssuchascrimes),and networks(streets).StudentswilldevelopskillsnecessaryforcarryingoutbasicGISprojectsandforadvancedGIScoursework.Wewillfocuson waysthatGISisandcouldbeappliedtourbanhistory,health,criminologyandsocialservices.Theclassalsoaimstohelpstudentsdevelopan understandingofwhatisspatial,whenGISisappropriateforansweringquestion,andtodevelopanawarenessofthepowerissuesinvolvedin mapmaking.Bytheendofthiscourse,youshouldbefamiliarenoughwithArcGIS9.3tofind,map,andanalyzedatausingbasicGIStoolsandbe abletoteachyourselfadditionalGISskillsusingthehelpfiles,onlinematerials,andsoftwaremanuals.Thiscourseisspecificallydesignedto prepareyouforyourseniorthesis,springorinternship,andintermediateGIScourses(LARP741andLARP743). GRADING Yourgradewillbebasedonclassparticipation(10%),homeworkassignments(60%),andafinalproject(30%). COURSEMATERIALS AmanualforworkingwithArcGIS9.3isavailableonBlackboard(underCourseMaterials)aswellasseriesofexercisesthatreinforcematerial coveredinclass.Youarenotrequiredtocompletetheexercises,butyouareencouragedtocompletethemastheyarehelpfultoyou.Allofthe dataforthecourseisavailableonthedatacdromthatwillbedistributedinclass.Youwillalsoreceiveafreeoneyearstudenteditionof ArcViewGIS9.3software. FINALPROJECT

Thefinalprojectrequiresyoutoposearesearchquestion,collectdata,createmapstoaddressyourquestion,andwriteafinalpaperthat describesyourresearchmethodsandresults.Yourprojectcanbestructuredasaneedsassessment,programevaluation,researchreport,or magazinearticle.Thefinalproductshouldinclude35mapsandapproximately2,500wordsoftext.Themapsshouldbeincludeddirectlyinthe paperratherthananappendix.Yourfinalpapershouldidentifyyourresearchquestion,thesignificanceofyourresearch,thespatialdimension ofyourquestion(whywasmappingnecessary/useful?),yourconceptualframeworkwhichshouldintegratewhatyoufoundinyourliterature review,yourdataandmethods,aspatialanalysisofwhatyoufound,andnextstepsyouwouldtakeifyouweretocontinuethisproject.
