MEDICATION REFERENCE LIST

The importance of determining what medication a donor may be taking is to elicit information regarding an underlying condition for the drug therapy. This question may bring to light significant conditions that may not have been mentioned earlier in the interview. Such conditions must be explored thoroughly with the donor. Only occasionally are the effects of the medication itself on the recipient of significance, i.e., Accutane or Tegison or human derived pituitary growth hormone. There are additional considerations for platelet pheresis donors, and use of platelets from whole blood donations. Ingestion of aspirin-containing medications or piroxicam within 3 days of donation should preclude the use of a donor as a source of platelets for a recipient. Refer to the last two pages of this document for a list medications containing aspirin.
