Hunger Games Mini Socratic Seminar

Directions: In your group of three to four, you will have a mini Socratic Seminar, also known as a literature circle. The purpose of a literature circle is to deepen reading comprehension and literary analysis skills. The mini Socratic is very similar to a class-wide Socratic Seminar except that the groups are smaller and youll have more air time. Here are the following rules: Rule #1: Remember to follow the performance guidelines of a Socratic Seminar. Rule #2: Assign and follow roles. Here are the suggested roles: a. Facilitator: leader; keeps the group on-task and reminds classmates to follow the performance guidelines b. Scribe: completes reflection form for the group c. Whys Guy (or girl): asks the hard questions; requires each comment be supported by evidence d. Time Keeper: ensures that the group follows the timeline and completes the task Rule #3: Go DEEP! Mini Socratic seminars are a valuable time to delve into the text and make interesting connections and insights. Rule #4: Focus on the discussion. Dont worry about completing the handout; the discussion has priority. I will provide time at the end of the seminar to complete the reflection questions. Rule #5: Dont feel that you have too much discussion time! If you finish the discussion early, that likely means your group has had a superficial discussion. Required Discussion Topics: 1. What are the possible outcomes of Katniss rising popularity? (If you have read the entire book, restrain yourselves to simply Chapters 1-18). What are some of the motives Haymitch and Cinna have for helping Katniss?
