Here is a glimpse of the syllabus for the first nine lessons of Book 4 of Direct English:
Unit 28 1 Major grammar topic: Nouns & Adjectives Lesson 1: Countable and uncountable nouns compared. 2 Major grammar topic: Articles and Quantity Lesson 2: General statements with a/an and 'zero' and the 'plural' form of a/an. 3 Major grammar topic: Pronouns and Relatives Lesson 3: Personal pronouns, subject and object; gender. Unit 29 4 Major grammar topic: Adverbs and adverb clauses Lesson 1: adverbs of manner; adverbs with two forms, but different meanings. 5 Major grammar topic: Prepositions and phrasal verbs Lesson 2: words used as prepositions, adverbs or conjunctions. 6 Major grammar topic: Verbs and verb tenses Lesson 3: Stative and dynamic verbs. 2. Notions: Notions are the ideas, beliefs and opinions about the real world created in speakers mind by the meaning elements of the sentences.

3. Function (communicative function): A language function is what we, as speakers do with the language, or the purpose of the words we say. In other words, a speech act.

4. Situation: This is the communicative context or situation (the environments or sorroundings where communication takes place) where the learner will be using the language.

6. Vocabulary (lexical items): This part refers to the words (their collocation and morphological formation) of the language. Their selection depends on the notions, situations and functions previously stated.

7. Pronunciation: This part refers to the phonology of the language. It must include working with individual sounds (phonemes). Special attentions is suggested to the analysis of differences in pronunciation between the L1 and L2.

Major elements of pronunciation to be considered: 1. Articulation (parts and moods of articulation) 2. Stress (emphasis given to a certain syllables in words) 3. Intonation (variation of pitch while speaking).

8. Cultural aspects: The syllabus must include the presentation of elements of the way of life of the group of people using the L2 as their native language. It involves behaviors, beliefs, values, and symbols that they perform.
