IIME 440 and OPMT 420 Six Sigma and Quality Management COURSE DESCRIPTION Six Sigma, Lean, Problem Solving, and Quality Management Continuous Improvement is critical to an organizations success, as well as to its survival. The core of continuous improvement is the ability of an organization to study their organization in a way that empowers their employees to improve what they do each day. In this course, you will learn about Six Sigma, Lean, Problem Solving, and Quality Management. Youll learn how to apply these into the organizations that you are part of and you will acquire the hands on experience that will enable you to make an immediate impact. Youll learn the DMAIC 6 Sigma methodology through lectures, in class hands on training, and working on real organizational 6 Sigma projects. Youll learn about fundamental LEAN principles and Lean Management through lectures, in class discussion, hands on application, and assigned readings. Youll learn the A3 process to solve problems. The core of the A3 is that every issue an organization faces can and should be captured on a single piece of paper. o Note: A3 is the international-size of paper, approximately 11-by-17 inches. Youll learn the history and importance of Quality Management. Youll hear from industry leading experts through Guest Speaker visits. o Industry leaders from manufacturing, healthcare, banking, and insurance.

Course Grading 40% on real world Six Sigma project 15% based on peer review from your teammates on your project; 25% from instructor evaluation (Note: 10% from Project Sponsor Evaluation that Instructor will obtain from Sponsor) 30% based on examinations the midterm exam will count 15% of the grade and the final will count 15% 30% based on class participation and contribution during class. This will be discussed further in class, but will include the following Class Attendance Class Participation In Class Break Out Sessions Report Outs Facilitation Skills Course Format PDF files will be posted on Blackboard corresponding to the weekly topics Assigned readings will come from required books. Midterm and Final exams are hand written.

Course Project 1. The class team projects will come from real-world companies in Northeast Ohio that have agreed to provide them. 2. Class members may nominate projects from their own company. Please inform the instructor as soon as possible if you have any potential projects. 3. The projects should be process improvement projects amenable to the Six Sigma DMAIC approach. 4. If any part of your project is being used to meet any requirements for any other course, you are obligated to inform me of that. It is allowable to do that, but only with the express consent of all involved instructors, and monitoring to ensure that the courses stress different aspects. 5. You will be asked to rank all the projects that are available to the class. The instructor will review student rankings and take into consideration what the project and the organization requires. The instructor will make suitable project and student staffing determinations. 6. All project proposals from students due on Monday, September 7. Proposal Requirements will be posted on Blackboard. 7. Project requirements, final report, and team presentation will be available on Blackboard. 8. More project specific details will be shared in class.
