Felicitas Cordes
THE CEILING OF CONSUMERISM According to the Royal Academy of the Spanish Language dictionary, consumerism is defined as an immoderate tendency to acquiring, spending or consuming goods, not always necessary. To reach its ceiling would take this tendency to its highest point, its limit. In order to complete the definition of consumerism, Wikipedias community adds, large-scale consumerism in contemporary society seriously compromises natural resources and ecological balance. (...) (Consumerism) is understood as unbridled acquisition or buying, it idealizes its effects and consequences by associating its practice to obtaining personal satisfaction and even happiness. If it were to have a limit, what would it be? This piece is the result of months of collective work from Suprema. It consists of a weave made out of waste materials, especially plastic bags, of different colors, sizes, thicknesses and origin. It is in the search of the ceiling of consumerism that you will find the constant growth of this piece, the progressive tension of the flamboyant addition of more bags and waste materials that take new shapes, entries and exits, suck more plastic in the spaces which hold it or seem to be taken by it. In the chapter Non-stop Consumerism from his Essay on the Throwaway Society, The paradoxical society, the great contemporary thinker, French philosopher Gilles Lipovetsky, explains that there are no longer any norms or mentalities which frontally oppose the display of monetary needs. All inhibitions, all retrograde defenses have been eliminated, all that is left in the arena is the consumer legitimacy, the incitement to immediate pleasure, odes to joy, and personal conservation. The first big cycle of rationalization and modernization
are finished: there is nothing left to abolish, the world is entirely conformed, educated, adapted to unlimited consumerism. The throwaway era is commencing when old cultural resistances fall, when local cultures no longer represent a restraint to the preference of novelties. In words of the group, it may be possible that this very piece succumbs to the rules of consumerism, either from visual and esthetic rhetoric or because the systematic incorporation of said rules ban that questioning. Since when is need questioned? The challenge will be mutual. Felicitas Cordes
The ceiling is adaptable, malleable to different exhibition spaces, due to the length of the turnbuckles.

THE LAW OF DISUSE This time, Grupo Suprema would like to introduce to you our second collective work of art, La ley en desuso (The Law of Disuse). This piece is formed with particular abstract objects governed by a goyesque color palette. The material used are legal books called annals of legislation and summary of case law of Argentina, from 1970 to present. Due to the change in paradigms and to the regular use of new technologies, these books have fallen to disuse and they have become a true relic with a sole legal purpose: decorative. As a consequence of the idleness of these books, it is imposible not to wonder how this metaphor has become a fact in reality. In effect, the answer was easily found just observing: it is not just the legislation books that sit idle, the attachment to and respect for rules have become something relative, depending on convenience, and the advantage that may come from it. Nevertheless, the object of this piece is far from accussing or reproaching. How could we do so if we are all part of this society? That being said, we do have the ambition of at least showing through art that useless waste can be trasnformed into something never thought of before, or better yet, that can promote reflection as it did to us. Grupo Suprema
This work is also accompanied with a performance, making this the concept that we develop.
