ABSTRACT

A sustainable building, or green

GREEN BUILDI NGS

building is an outcome of a design philosophy increasing which the focuses efficiency on of

resource use energy, water, and materials. Many countries have developed their own standards for green building or energy efficiency for buildings. A recent survey by the World Business Council for Sustainable Development finds that green costs are overestimated by 300 percent, as key players in real estate and construction conventional estimate the additional cost at 17 percent above construction, more than triple the true average cost difference of about 5 percent. Green building is interpreted in many different ways, a common opinion is that they bring together a vast array of practice and techniques to reduce and ultimately eliminate the impacts of buildings on human health and the natural environment.

INTRODUCTION
Green building is a concept idea incorporating a wide spectrum of solutions and best-practices.

PRACTICES
Practice emphasizes taking

advantage of renewable resources, e.g., using sunlight through passive solar, active solar, and photovoltaic techniques gravel or . Many other concrete techniques, such as using packed permeable instead of conventional concrete or asphalt to enhance replenishment of ground water, are used as well. The EPA (Environmental

Protection Agency) also suggests using recycled industrial goods, such as coal combustion products, foundry sand, and heavily demolition reduces debris in construction projects Polyurethane

CII-IGBC recently announced that Shree Ram Urban Infrastructure - a developer - is attempting the first ever LEED Platinum rating (Core & Shell) in India and will be the first ever residential building in the world to do so. Entitled ' Palais Royale', the building will be located in Worli, Mumbai with an estimated height of over 1,000 ft (300 m).Also, Hyderabad based Aliens -Space Station 1 and Space station 2 -Residential project also in the process of achieving gold rated Green building certificate. The Indian Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE) had launched the Energy Conservation set for Building energy Code (ECBC) on February 2007. The code is efficiency standards for design and construction with any building of minimum conditioned area of 1000 Sq mts and a connected demand of power of 500 KW or 600 KVA. The energy performance index of the code is set to where from 90 200 any KWh/sqm/year KWh/sqm/year

Polyurethane blocks are being used instead of CMTs Polyurethane blocks provide more speed, less cost, and they are environmentally friendly.

PRACTICES IN INDIA
The Confederation of Indian

Industry (CII) plays an active role in promoting sustainability in the Indian construction sector. The CII is the central pillar of the Indian Green Building Council or IGBC. The IGBC has licensed the LEED Green Building Standard from the U.S. Green Building Council and currently certifying is responsible for LEED-New

Construction and LEED-Core and Shell buildings in India. All other projects are certified through the U.S. Green Building Council. There are many energy efficient buildings in India, situated in a variety of climatic zones. One of these is RMZ Millenia Park, Chennai, India's largest LEED gold-rated Core & Shell green building.

little extra investment, tremendous energy and water savings are possible. Measures are being taken to spread awareness about the GRIHA-National Green Building Rating System of India. Many countries have developed their own standards for green building or energy efficiency for buildings. some examples of building environmental assessment tools currently in use: Australia: Nabers / Green Star Brazil: AQUA / LEED Brasil China: GBAS Finland: Promise Germany: DGNB India: GRIHA National Rating System developed by TERI /LEED India Malaysia: GBI Malaysia New Zealand: Green Star NZ In the banner of Reliance Mukesh ambani has also developed a green building named Antila in the year of 1993.

Reserve Bank of India's (RBI) buildings in Delhi and Bubaneshwar in Orissa have already been rated 4 star and 5 star respectively The Energy and Resource Institute plays a very important role in developing green building capacities in the country. TERI came up with a rating system called GRIHA which was adopted by the Govt. of India as the National Green Building Rating System for the country. GRIHA aims at ensuring that all kinds of buildings become green buildings. THE CESE building in IIT Kanpur became the first GRIHA rated building in the country and it scored 5 stars, highest in GRIHA under the system. It has become a model for green buildings in the country. It has proved that with

generated by the occupants as well, by providing on-site solutions such as compost bins to reduce matter going to landfills. "Greywater", wastewater from considered to be 'green' include rapidly renewable plant materials like bamboo and straw, lumber from forests certified to be sustainably managed, dimension stone, recycled stone, recycled metal, and other products that are non-toxic, reusable, renewable, and/or recyclable Onsite generation of renewable energy through solar power, wind power, hydro power, or biomass can significantly Power the reduce of generation the the is environmental building. generally impact most Centralized wastewater treatment systems can be costly and use a lot of energy. An alternative to this process is converting waste and wastewater into fertilizer, which avoids these costs and shows other benefits. By collecting human It also seeks to reduce waste of energy, water and materials used during construction. For example, in California nearly 60% of the state's waste comes one from goal commercial buildings During the construction phase, should be to reduce the amount of material going to landfills. Welldesigned buildings also help waste at the source and running it to a semi-centralized biogas plant with other biological waste, liquid fertilizer can be produced. This concept was demonstrated by a settlement in Lubeck Germany in the late 1990s. Practices like these provide soil with organic nutrients and create carbon sinks that remove carbon dioxide from the sources such as dishwashing or washing machines, can be used for subsurface irrigation, or if treated, for non-potable purposes, e.g., to flush toilets and wash cars. Rainwater collectors are used for similar purposes.

FUTURE PROJECTS
I. Low consumption buildings (BBC) by 2010 with minimum requirements concerning the levels of renewable energy and CO2 absorption materials by 2012.

20% reduction in France's energy consumption by 2020 and a boosting of the use of renewable energy, such as wind power and biofuels, by 20% by 2020;

II. Passive new buildings (BEPAS) or Positive buildings (BEPOS) by 2020.

Freight be transported on new high-speed rail lines and waterways rather than highways

CONCLUSION
Green buildings are not those buildings which are green in colour but they are buildings which are constructed with low cost and efficient use of energy available in the local surroundings so that it may not affect the environment and the living beings in the society.
