After completing the first portion of the assignment and reading the book Pink and Say by Patricia

Pollacco, I decided to focus my attention on civil war themed books and books that dealt with friendships (particularly friendships of different races and ethnicities). I am doing my internship in an elementary school so I checked a few books out of their library as well as our local library here in town. I found books that ranged in genres, I found some biographies, fiction, and non-fiction books. Here are the books that I found, that I beleive connect really well with Pink and Say: Al Abdullah, J. (2010). The Sandwich Swap. New York, NY: Hyperion Books for Children. This book is about two little girls that come from different backgrounds but our best friends. One day they swap sandwiches one being a pb and j and the other being a hummus sandwich and they judge each other. After fighting and bickering the girls finally realize its okay to be different, and to appreciate others cultures. This book is written at a 2.9 book level according to www.ARbookfind.com

Polacco, P. (2011). Just in time, Abraham Lincoln. New York, NY: Scholastic INC.For these b a trip to an old civil war museum was going to be anything but boring. Michael and Derek never would have guessed that they themselves would see first hand how life was in 1862 especially not during the middle of a war. This book is written at a 4.2 book level according to www.ARbookfind.com

Rapport, D. (2008). Abes Honest Words: the life of Abraham Lincoln. New York, NY: Hyperion Books for Children. This book is about the life of Abraham Lincoln before and after he became the President of the United States. It told of his struggles in life, how he didnt agree with the act of slavery, and how he ran for office more than once and finally succeed to go forth and make a difference. This book is written at a 4.9 reading level according to Grand Primary School Library.

Wiles, D. (2001). Freedom Summer. New York, NY: Atheneum Books for Young Readers. This book is about two little boys who are best friends during the times of segregation. One boy was African American and his mother worked for the family of the other little boy who was caucasian. The boys wanted to do everything together, especially swim in the town pool. But colored people werent allowed, when Joe saw how upset that made John Henry he knew he had to take a stand. He showed John Henry he cared about him and their friendship more than about what others thought. This book is written at a 3.2 reading level according to the Grandy Primary School Library.
