Its in your blood, its in
your genes and in the
case of Ranger his breed.
Y
ou see, Ranger is a Belgian Mali-
nois, known for their prowess as
police dogs, rescue dogs and in service
alongside our celebrated Navy Seals. In
fact, its been reported that a Malinois
was a part of Seal Team Six that took
out Osama Bin Laden.
A lot of dogs have a whole lot of en-
ergy, but Malinois take it to a whole
other stratosphere. Its that kind of
thirst for excitement and adrenaline that
makes Ranger a real player in the grow-
ing sport of dock diving.
They are real athletes, they really
need to do a job, said owner/trainer
Susan Herskowitz about the breed.
Having a Malinois is not for everyone.
Its like learning to drive on a Ferrari.
Its not for the average dog owner who
just wants a pet.
Herskowitz is a newcomer to the dock
diving universe. A former architect in
New York City who escaped the corpo-
rate grind to follow her passion as a
specialist in Uranian Astrology, she
now consults with clients from around
the world out of her Great Barrington
home where shes lived since 2004.
Shes been an owner of a Malinois,
Ysa, for the past three years. Ranger
was a rescue dog who joined the family
last year. But early on it was clear that
Ranger (who is also a therapy dog)
had to do something with his energy,
according to Herskowitz.
Dock diving has become that outlet.
Hes a contender, but dock diving is
very much a team sport, she said. Like
a game of fetch, Rangers jump height
and direction is heavily influenced by
the location of the tossed moving target
or bumper, which is basically a toy.
Susans throw has to be just right. Its
about timing and physics to toss the toy
for optimal distance and height. To
fully understand this, you first have to
visualize the layout of the dock diving
playing field (or, pool). Picture a rec-
tangular above ground pool that is 40
feet in length and 20 feet in width. At
the far end is a 40-foot long dock that
serves as essentially a launching pad
for well-trained canine projectile mis-
siles, driving down the dock and cata-
pulting toward an air-born toy that sails
above the water. Everyones got a
method for how they get distance from
their dog. With Ranger, hes so fast, the
release of the toy has to be quick, she
said. You want them to follow the toy
in the air, but just in front of them
where they are really reaching and
stretching for that toy.
As most of the dock diving athletes
and trainers, Ranger takes advantage
of the entire length of the dock to
build velocity and momentum, like an
Olympic long-jumper gathering speed
on the strip to liftoff from the board to
the sand pit. The difference, of course,
is motivation. While the long-jumper
dreams of breaking a world record,
standing at the top of the podium and
achieving greatness, Rangers goal is
much more simple. All Ranger cares
about is that I want that toy and Im
going to do whatever I can to get it,
she said. When a dog has excellent
toy drive, Herskowitz said they
will contort themselves to catch a bad
throw. By no means does the dogs
simple motivation diminish the thrill
and excitement experienced both by
the athlete and trainer. In fact, its that
full engagement that Susan says
makes it all worth it. Its fun for me
because I love to see him excited. Its
definitely engaging for both of you.
You sort of lose all space and time
when youre in the moment.
Still, this is a competition and its all
about striving to be better even if its
simply competing to break your own
personal record.
So, how do you get there? Well, it
takes training. But, again, effective
training for a dock diving athlete means
understanding Rangers motivation.
According to Susan, in practice, you
cant simply toss the toy out farther and
higher out of reach to achieve results.
Like any goal that becomes unattained
time after time, literally out of reach,
the dog will lose hope of catching the
toy in the air, reduce the height of their
jump which in turn will shorten the
measured length in the pool. Instead,
Susan trains Ranger with shorter tosses
where he can catch the toy, which
boosts his confidence that hell be able
to catch it in the air. In other words,
while a successful dock diving team is
made up of strong athletics, psychics
and mechanics, a significant piece of
the formula also includes Skinner-style
behavioral psychology.
But, lets not get too nerdy. In the end,
this is about all the fun pet owners (and
their pets) have playing a simple game
of fetch. Well, maybe this is more like
a game of fetch - on steroids. Either
way, for Susan its difficult to describe
what the sport has meant to her and
Ranger. Its sort of an intangible thing.
Its a connection, its a love, its a trust,
its an exchange of energy, Herskowitz
said. Its hard to define, we are both
really satisfied.
Some were just born
to be an athlete.

Dock diving is coming
back to the Berkshires!
F
or the second consecutive year, dog
dock diving will be presented by
Hudson Valley DockDogs as the cen-
terpiece of the Great Barrington Kennel
Clubs Responsible Dog Ownership
Days. This annual celebration of dogs
and their people will take place on Sep-
tember 15 and 16 at the VFW field in
Great Barrington (just south of Guidos
). Last years event attracted over 500
enthusiastic pet owners and pet lovers.
This year, that number promises to be larger.
Dock diving is a relatively new com-
petitive sport for canines. On command
(and sometimes with a bit of prodding
from anxious owners and a cheering
crowd of onlookers) one dog at a time
leaps into a sizable above-ground pool
to retrieve an object that has been
tossed into the water. Canine contest-
ants compete in categories that include
big air (long jump), extreme vertical
(high jump), and speed retrieve.
A number of dogs are now part of the
professional dock diving circuit.
However, there is as much room in the
sport for the first-time
jumper as there is for the
ardent competitor. Some
jumpers have a long pedi-
gree; others are of mixed
breed. To compete as a
dock diver, the dog simply
needs to feel comfortable
in or near water.
Many of the more sea-
soned dock divers at last
years event displayed an incredible
grace and athleticism as they raced
down the dock and seemed to soar
through the air until splashing in the
water. A few of the neophytes,
however, needed a bit more
coaxing. In some cases, dogs
ambled rather than sped to the
edge of the dock. In other in-
stances, a canine ran to the end
of the dock only to stop
abruptly, as if to say, You want
me to do what?? At such
times competition gave way to
community as the throng of on-
lookers surrounding the pool
joined their voices in a chorus
of encouragement to the hesi-
tant pooch. When the dog ulti-
mately splashed into the water,
the crowd erupted into applause.
At this years event, which is
being made possible in large
part by major sponsors Berk-
shire Money Management and
Haddad Auto, not only will
dogs be dock diving and on-
lookers cheering. Vendors will
be vending, Pet Partners of the
Tri-State Berkshires will be
holding a selective raffle to benefit
needy pets and their people, one lucky
person will be winning two tickets to a
Boston Red Sox home
game in the 2013 sea-
son, and pet owners
and pet lovers who
come from far and
wide will delight in a
time of fabulous fun,
food and festivities.
Although the spotlight
will likely shine most
brightly this year on the
dock diving dogs, event planners Honor
Blume and Tish Thorpe are hoping to
devote a significant segment of this
years Responsible Dog Ownership
Days to education, information, and in-
spirationas well as fun. To this end,
the two-day event will include training
sessions and live demonstrations as fol-
lows:
Agility
Ask the groomer
Dancing with the dogs
Frisbee
Great Barrington Police K-9 Unit
Rally and obedience
Also, therapy dogs will be present on
Saturday, and on Sunday canine good
citizen testing will be performed and a
confirmation match (mini dog show)
will take place. In brief, every partici-
pant will find his/her dog-loving spirit
uplifted by something at this years Re-
sponsible Dog Ownership Days.
At the end of last years event, Honor
Blume noted, Its hard not to grin
when you see people and their dogs re-
ally enjoying each other and having fun
together.
We invite you to come grin with us
this September 15 and 16 at the VFW
field in Great Barrington. Both days
will begin at 9 a.m. Admission is free,
although there is a $5 per car parking
fee. Proceeds from the latter will help
support a local pet-related charity.

A
year and a half after successfully
rescuing my bearded dragons Nia
and Drielle, featured in previous arti-
cles, I decided that it might be a good
time to add to my scaly family. I began
doing my research on what reptile I
might want to care for next and decided
on a Blue Tongue Skink; an intriguing
lizard native to Australia and aptly
named for their striking azure blue
tongues.
Upon deciding on a reptile my next
step was to find a quality pet store to
buy one from. I looked on many reptile
exposition websites and called multiple
vendors, finally deciding on a wonder-
ful little exotics exclusive store located
in Connecticut, called New England
Herpetoculture. I called and asked if
they had any blue tongues in stock and
the owner, Mike, informed me that the
only one he had was a drop-off which
he was attempting to rehabilitate and
find a home for. We agreed to meet to
see if it was an appropriate match, and
a few days after that I traveled two
hours to his facility.
Mike introduced me to my hopeful
rescue and
filled me in
on what had
happened to
him. A man
had come
into Mike's
store and
said that he
could no longer care for the lizard; he
gave no real explanation as to why his
back was so deformed, simply stating
"I don't know what happened". In the
middle of Loki's back there is a crescent
shaped indent, so deep that you could
rest a toilet paper roll on top of it. Mike
graciously took the lizard in and began
rehabilitation. I handled the skink,
which I quickly named Loki after the
blue skinned Norse God of mischief,
and agreed to take him home and con-
tinue rehabilitation. I bought all my
supplies from Mike and called my vet-
erinarian to make an appointment to try
to see what may have happened to the
poor little guy.
I had multiple x-rays of Loki and a
general health exam performed, which
led my veterinarian to a
conclusion that made my
heart sink at the reality of
what had clearly taken
place. According to my
veterinarian Loki had been
kept in a small cage with
no UVB lighting and was
then dropped to the ground
where he broke his back. UVB lighting
is important in the production of vita-
min D3, which is necessary for calcium
metabolism and bone health.
The lack of UVB made his already
fragile bones even more susceptible to
breakage. My doctor informed me that
his broken spine was pushing one of his
lungs up, along with other organs, and
that is why he would sneeze often to
expel air, as it was difficult to breathe.
He classified this break as one of the
worst he had seen in a live animal. We
determined that it would be far more
traumatic to fix his already healed spine
than it would be leave it as is and take
precautions. I now have to monitor the
amount that Loki eats, so as not to over-
fill his cramped stomach or make his
breathing any more difficult.
He is doing remarkably well and has
grown in both width and length over the
year and a half I have had him. He has
finally become accustomed to me han-
dling him and is now an important
member of my reptile shows.
The hardest pill for me to swallow is
that his pain and suffering could have
been avoided if his previous owner had
attempted to learn about how to prop-
erly take care of this beautiful animal. I
suppose my consolation prize from this
disappointment comes from the fact
that he is safely at home with me now
and is cared for and doted on properly.
His name definitely suits him, as he is
certainly full of mischief, but I love him
dearly anyways.

W
hen I visited Purradise on August
30, the posted history of nearly
every cat there bore the same word:
STRAY. However, rest assured, the
staff does not go about the county like
cartoon dogcatchers, net in hand. Every
such cat had been brought to
Purradises mother location, the
Berkshire Humane Society, by con-
cerned individuals...as had been other
kitties that, for allergy, landlord, or
other issues, could not stay in their for-
mer home.
Surrendering a cat to BHS need not be
a daunting procedure, and safeguards
that the animal will be cared forre-
gardless of advanced age, pregnancy, or
medical needsuntil a new home can
be found. However, dont just pop
Pussy in a carton and drive up: some
basic procedures do need to be fol-
lowed.
First, ALWAYS phone BHS (not
Purradise) to set up an appointment.
Explains executive director John Per-
reault, Making appointments...helps
us control the population of animals
that are entering our buildingit also
gives us a fighting chance to find
homes for all our adoptable animals. If
someone calls today and we have no
room and it is not an emergency sur-
render, he encourages the caller to
keep the cat for another week or so, to
avoid overcrowding the facility.
Also, are you certain that a stray cat
is homeless? Before scooping up the
creature, ask around. Says John, When
someone calls with a stray, a conversa-
tion takes place to see why person
thinks that it is a stray. We ask them to
make sure that it does not belong to
anyone in the area in which it was
found and we check our own lost and
found book, prior to them bringing in
the cat. We also review the newspapers
lost and found every day. BHS also
checks for microchips and ear mark-
ings, which may be a tipoff to a previ-
ous owner, shelter, or rescue group such
as Animal Dreams. About 42 percent of
incoming adoptees are indeed con-
firmed strays.
If the cat has been a pet, be sure to
bring along its medical records and
other pertinent information (has it lived
with other animals? children? been
strictly indoors?). Andvery impor-
tantwas it adopted previously? In
such a case, We always direct them
back to the shelter or rescue that they
adopted from. Should the rescue or
shelter not wish to take a cat back, in
that case we would accept [it], says
John.
BHS prides itself on being an open-
admission shelter. The only way that
the shelter would turn a cat away is if it
has bitten in the last 10 days, a pre-
caution against rabies. And there is NO
FEE to surrender any animalthough
donations to support the good work of
BHS are encouraged.
At Purradise on August 30, two cats
were happily outward bound: Amy ini-
tially chose PaPa, renamed Papa Jack,
because he was just so adorable. Last
week, he was all over me, kissing me...I
am not used to cats kissing me! While
his adoption papers were being
processed, she paired him with a po-
tential buddy in the shelters cozy
nook. They all got along so well that
Baby Gatos, now called Bouli, went
home with PaPa Jack. Sweet!
